That's really stoopid. Hard to justify the 3% extra for diesels if the particulate problem is cleaned up Read more
Interesting scenario this morning, an accident closed a main road in Tottenham.
The roads on the routes used by bendy buses have been re-engineered because they can't make the sort of tight turns you can in a double decker.
Trouble is, this morning they were having to use bits of road that haven't been straightened!
Where about is the diaphram on the lucas injection pump, is it the side round part or on the bottom, how do i test this? Read more
did you find where the diaphram was?
Drat! (Allows for the upgraded swear filter). With less than 2000 miles on the clock I slid my new C8 into a foot-high bollard while parking on some icy cobbles last week. Speed, negigible, damage, considerable. The bollard made a dent in the sill just aft of the nearside front wheel, fortunately missing the door. It's an insurance job so I rang my broker for a claim form. "A claim form?" he chortled, "we don't use those any more, ring this number". And so I did and was directed to a local Vauxhall dealer who provided me with a nondescript Vauxhall Corsa while the C8 was being repaired. I went to collect it yesterday and my delight at seeing it valeted and tyre-blacked quickly evaporated when I saw that the cleaner had banged two of the seats together and bent the plastic picnic tray on one seat. Not only that but the so-called repair has a shape completely unrelated to the profile of the rest of the sill. The damage could still be detected by anyone. I have rejected the repair, not paid the excess and asked them to supply and fit a new picnic tray.
My question is, what quality of repair should I ultimately expect? I would have hoped that the dent should disappear completely; is this too much to hope for? Has anyone else had a repair done and seen it vanish, so to speak? Or will there always be a trace? I fear that using the insurance company's "approved repairer" has limited my scope for choosing someone competent.

Equipped with oxygen mask and jet engine?
My 1999 1.9DTi Scenic produces a slight burning smell from the exhaust when idling.It smokes occasionally on acceleration but not excessive. Is the burning smell produced by the catalytic converter (I presume one is fitted)and is this normal? Or is it oil? Does not seem to use oil. Read more
"Smokes from exhaust, not noticed until dark & headlights from car behind pick it up whilst pulling away."
Absolutely 100% normal for any diesel car.
Keep an eye on your temperature guage, oil levels, water level, and check fuel consumption.
Could anyone please clarify why it's necessary to remove the themostat when flushing engine coolant passages?
Does the presence of thermostat (closed) trap coolant in a particular part of the system? I recently drained my Passat's coolant (without removing the thermostat) and although I didn't measure the quantity, it seemed to be somewhat short of the specified amount. Upon refilling, it took about a litre and a half less than the spec to fill the system.
Any ideas? I'm doing the coolant tomorrow on the girlfriend's Fiesta. Read more
Any idea where it is on Ford's 1.3 OHV Endura block?
Hi,
My xud isn't as good as I think it should be, so I'd like some advice (please) before taking it to the garage.
1. The length of time the glow plugs stay on for when starting from cold is very variable. Sometimes they go off after 1-2 seconds and lots of white smoke is produced when starting. In this case the idling speed is around 1000 whereas on a good start it is over 1100.
I've heard of something called a "waxstat", but there's no reference to it in Haynes. Otherwise glow plug control box thing.
2. Its a bit noisy and I struggle to get 45mpg. (Its done nearly 100,000.) Injectors/compression/valve clearances maybe? I know that injectors are expensive, but how much should I expect to pay to get the other stuff checked and sorted out if wrong?
Thanks.
Richard. Read more
The valve clearance (it's always the inlets that tighten up) seems to only affect the turbo versions. Never seen a non turbo XUD with tight inlets, but have seen many TUD (both 1.4 and 1.5 sizes) with the very same 'fault'
The less-stressed non turbo engine seems more durable, I guess because of the lower stresses on it.

I have been looking for a 525d touring used - 2 years old.
I was surprised that there were not that many around and that most people still seem to opt for petrol.
With prices going up surely the depreciation on the diesel cars is going to be much less....or have I missed something? Do people see these a luxo cars and therefore think they must be petrol?
By the way the 525d at 2 years old is almost the same price as a one year old Accord Tourer 2.2d. Which will depreciate less?? Read more
You will find that Tourings, whether 3 or 5 Series are much scarcer than their saloon equivalents and so hold their value much better. To illustrate this point, there are only five 320d SE manuals currently available throughout the whole main dealer network, whereas there are more than 100 saloons. Most of the Tourings are also privately owned so generally get more considerate treatment.
I am desperatley trying to locate a speedometer drive housing for my 1995 306 n/a diesel gearbox. I need to find out what other gearboxes will use the same fitment. Am I right in that my gearbox is BE3? If so will the housing off a 205 / 309 gearbox fit?? Read more
According to Haynes ...
306 1993-1995 (My Haynes manual only goes up to 1995)
BE3 = 1.8 litres and over (petrol or diesel)
MA = Any other
309 1986-1987 (My Haynes manual only goes up to 1987)
BE1 = All models

Should have added this was traced by me driving with an RAC technician sitting in the back looking for it! When he put some pressure on the c-pillar trim the rattle would stop.
