I took my 97 megane 1.6 sport coupe to the garage to get the rear wheel bearing replaced and they said that because it was a sport model, it was more expensive and quoted me a price of £65 inc fitting for the new bearing. Could anyone tell me if this is true and if thats a good price. many thanks Read more
My other half, bless her, has just phoned to say she has put 10 letres of unleaded into our diesel Scenic, and then realising her mistake has filled it to the brim with diesel in the hope that it will be OK (Or not notice her mistake perhaps!)
The tank holds around 60lts when full, and it seems to be running so far - well she hasn't phoned to say "It's stopped working" yet.
Any thoughts about possible damage etc???
Thanks for your help in advence

Thanks everyone.
Seems to be running fine. Only about 8 lts in a toatl tank full of 60 lts, so not too high percentage. Will keep topping up and see what happens.

Amazingly, the day after my Auto Trader ad expired, someone actually called expressing serious interest in my 5-series. He viewed it today and it looks quite promising.
One question for you Backroomers though... he didn't check the V5 at the time, but asked me to fax it to him - fine, he wants to carry out an HPI check. But after reading the "Nasty Ebay experience- bloke at the door" thread a few days back, it's enough to make one paranoid - I'm wondering whether I should cover up my address on the V5. I don't want to find the car's disappeared from outside my house one day. Mind you I don't know what the criminal fraternity would do with the precise knoweldge of my car's location.
Should I be cautious and not disclose this information? Read more
Thanks for the advice... fuelled my paranoia a little further!
However I have a land-line number and address for this guy, and it appears in the 192.com directory as well. And if the worst came to the worst I'd be able to give the police a pretty accurate description of him. So if he's disguising his identity he's being very subtle about it! I decided to send it and be damned.
I have had a problem with my speedo and have had to chage it, therefore it does not contain the correct mileage, im wondering what equipment will i need to correct the mileage myself, do i use an eeprom system, how easy is the equipment to use, and where can i purchase the equipment from at reasonable low cost?

Great. Just in time for Christmas then!
My 626 auto shifts smoothly up to third, but will rev up very high before flinging itself into 4th/OD. On the motorway yesterday, it remained in third at 4000 rpm for most of a two-hour journey, occasionally moving into OD only to downshift a few seconds later for no apparent reason. Any ideas what could cause this? It happened regularly last winter, as well, but the problem vanishes in warmer weather. I don't see how the seasons would affect the transmission, but it is the only factor I can identify. It is a 1990 626 2.0 auto 12v. The car has 110k miles. I am led to believe it is a Ford auto box, but don't know for sure. Thanks in advance for any adivce. Read more
Thanks for that, Pete. The car is in for service in a couple of weeks, so I will have the mechanic give it a look. The engine has been running suspiciously cool for some time, so the thermostat seems like a likely culprit. Normally, the temp guage climbs gently to the half-way point and then sits there like it has been riveted. Now it rests a fair bit lower, even after a stop-go journey around town.
Just had the platinum plugs in my Corolla 1.4vvti with Iridium jobs from sparkplugs.co.uk - however, I have noticed the engine sounds a bit different - a high pitch sound, not that loud. Can different plugs change the engine sound, or has the garage done something wrong ?! Read more
Sounds like such a basic thing tightening plugs I'm amazed they could have got that wrong ! Will take back to Garage !
:-(
A work colleague of mine has a 95 N Escort, which has an intermittent starting problem on a morning.
Sometimes it's fine,sometimes it won't play,although when it does and after,say,500 yards,it's ok.
The plugs and leads have just been changed, but still the problem persists.
Any ideas?

Bit vague this, dude.
What does it do when it doesn't start? Dead silence, nothing? Turns over slowly? Turns but won't fire? Fires and stalls out again?
How does it go from not starting to starting? Just by persisting, or does he have to jump it? Get out and push? Get a cup of tea and wait for the AA?
It's fine after 500 yards - so we presume it's not fine for 500 yards - right? In what way is it not fine? Juddery? Stalling? Sounds like an elephant?
Give us a clue :-)

"and they look like postman pat vans."
That is a disgraceful slur upon the Berlingo, RF, which is the perfect Postman Pat van! Picasso is nothing like Postman Pat van - it's far too ugly!!
I think all Picasso diesels are HDis which although not exactly overpowered in 90bhp form is still a cracking engine - smooth, quiet, economical (in this price range - we're not talking BMW here)
Plenty of info on HJs car by car breakdown also of course

To be honest £65 for a rear bearing on a newer car at a main dealer isn't that excessive. If it's a backstreet, it's a little bit steep but the figure sounds about right.
