I know synthetic oil greatly reduces wear but would it improve the gearchange quality. Read more

I've had problems with gearboxes on 2 cars after changing the oil.

The First was a Merc V-Class due to the Spec of the oil reccomended by castrol being wrong. The correct oil was a dealer only oil and the gearbox returned to normal when the correct oil was used.

The second is the Yaris which still has problems with poor gearchange when cold. The reccomended Toyota 75w-90 was used.
My dealer eventually changed the oil for ATF (Shell Donax TA)
which improved things slightly.

Overall I wish I'd just left alone.

Hi,

I've got a (2000W) 306 cabriolet 2.0SE with 39k and full PSH. I've been offered a (04) Xsara VTS coupe with delivery mileage for £9k.

I'm wondering whether I should switch to the Xsara. Will my 306 hold value better than the Xsara in two years time? Or am I better trading up to the Xsara?

If I trade in what should I expect for the 306 cab?

Any advice appreciated.

Yep I'm aware that the Xsara is now obsolete.

My main reason for changing is that it gives me a new car with delivery mileage. I'd keep it for two years and then trade in again.

Its gonna come down to how much it costs to change from the 306 cab to the Xsara. Insurance isn't a worry. I'm more worried out large bills appearing for the 306 cab.

Any suggestions what I should offer the dealer and what I should ask for mine?

Im looking at purchasing the Jaguar 2.0 Diesel Sport version but after reading a few reviews, seems theres a mixed bag of opinions about this car overall regardless of engine size. Have people got personal opinions on this car, whats the diesel engine and the overall car like?

Purely an aesthetic grounds I wouldn't be interested in an X type (though I'd be grateful if I received one as a gift). It has unfortunate 'toy XJ6' retro styling that has less grace and poise than the Mondeo it's partly based on.

im looking at buying a passat TDI (new shape). the 130bhp is a little more expensive and there are fewer around. whats the difference between the 100 and 130bhp - same 1.9 engine? are there any differences apart from the engine management and can i purchase a 100bhp and chip it up to 130bhp or near about.

thanks in advance

The difference between the two is not only 30 hp, the 130 produces a lot more torque as well. I think I am right in saying that the 130 has a variable vane turbocharger where as the 100 does not. Also regarding chipping bear in mind that VW restricted the max torque of the 130's with the 5 speed box to 310nm because the box would not take more torque where as the 130's with the 6 speed box are quoted as 320nm.

I would go for a slightly older 130 (perhaps a Sport with the 6 speed box) because it is not only much more gutsy than the 100, it is likely to be more economical too.

I had a Renault 16 which jammed in reverse, turned out to be impact damage which cracked a selector carrier.

Might be worth getting an independent inspection, if the car showed previous accident damage, it might help your case.
(especially if the car was sold with no accident history)

I am decided on a VAG group diesel and as I see it my choices are thus

A 2002 Golf GTDI 150

a 2003-4 Seat Ibiza 130 Diesel Sport

a Skoda Fabia VRS with the same 130 engine

All around the 10.5 to 12.5K mark.

Phil, that's absolutely fine. We're quite happy to allow links to other motoring forums specialising in different car makes etc. One of few links that we don't allow are to the Times, which is a direct competitor to the Telegraph, the paper that Honest John has a column in.

I need to get the clutch replaced on my '98 Alfa 156 2.5

Can anyone recommend a decently priced independant garage in East or Sth East London, and what sort of price I should be expecting?

I've come across a garage called "Gonella Brothers" in Catford, has anyone heard of them?

Thanks,

Very long standard garage well known in Italian Car circles. Never used them but by the time they've been around should be OK. Another who I used for the 75 was K & L but they're in Norff London. Another would be Cloverleaf Transmissions who did the 75 pinion bearing again even more Norff that K & L.

It has been suggested, by e-mail, that I might have moderated this thread in a biased manner due to me being one of those who actually drives an SUV.

That wasn't my intention, nor do I think its accurate, but reading I can see the point.

Nobody ever gave me an "undelete key", so I've taken the thread out.

Anyone with a 4x4 needs to realise the handling limitations of
these vehicles - doesn't matter how much it cost, you can't
change the laws of physics. Its is dangerous to drive
them like a saloon car. I note Mark(RLBS)'s comments about
4x4's and extra driver education and training - its a very
good point!

"You can't change the laws of Physics" should always be said with a scottish accent! I must admit I drive my small 4x4 with the same point in mind; most of the changes made by 4x4 manufactures hide the limitations of the vehicle, not remove them. Driven sensibly they are fine.

Anybody else find that Clarkson's column in the Sunday times has really gone downhill? I used to look forward to reading it, it actually used to be funny. Now it is just self congratulating and unfunny. With almost nothing on motoring. This week was the worst I have seen.

{Url removed. We're pretty liberal with links, but pointing straight to the Sunday Telegraph Motoring's main competitors is going a bit too far for us. DD}

Hi, Gearboxes should not be a problem, we have had engines producing 400nm plus for years it is just that before now they have typically been a 4.5 ltr V8, not a 4 cyl TD!
