Anybody else find that Clarkson's column in the Sunday times has really gone downhill? I used to look forward to reading it, it actually used to be funny. Now it is just self congratulating and unfunny. With almost nothing on motoring. This week was the worst I have seen.
{Url removed. We're pretty liberal with links, but pointing straight to the Sunday Telegraph Motoring's main competitors is going a bit too far for us. DD}

We are all dedicated Telegraph readers here and wouldn't dream of reading a downmarket rag like the Times.....
|
undoubtedly talented (he can communicate, like his views or not), but for me, JC's at his best when he's writing or talking about anything BUT motoring
|
Usually the first 50% of his column is not about motoring - this week it was about 80%! He also used some of this weeks Times article in Top Gear last night.

Where's the bit about the car?

who is Jeremy Clarkson?

>>who is Jeremy Clarkson?>>
Someone whose made enough dough to now be able to buy a pad in the Isle of Man and, eventually, build his own racing circuit there....:-)
I'm saving up like mad.....

"..but pointing straight to the Sunday Telegraph Motoring's main competitors is going a bit too far for us"
But he did say it was rubbish! :-)
|
And shouldn't we be referring to the Saturday Telegraph's (excellent) Motoring section? Sun Tel does not have a motoring section, just one car test in the magazine.

I rarely read this column and was very disappointed with it.
I scanned down to the 'car bit' looking forward to reading about the mondeo 2.2 tdci as I have the 2.0 at the moment.i would be very surprised if the engine is as bad as clarkson says, the 2.0 litre is a peach of an engine with plenty of fun to be had and 50mpg as well. As for the comment about the full beam being poor i can only assume he liked the wing mirrors so had to find something to fault!!
|
Clarkson comes across better in print than on the box. Maybe you can get away with more in print than verbally. I'll test that out:
"The Moskvitch 412 was one of the best looking cars ever made."
See, I could never have got away with that if I'd said it to the car-talkin' geezers dahn the pub!!!
Cheers, Sofa Spud

And here it is - the Moskvitch 412 in person:

By the way I was joking (LOL)

Looks better than a VW Beetle.

If we're quoting the Sunday Times, how about this response given to a reader from Kuala Lumpur who wanted advice on how to look after a car when starting it up:
So, as winter gets a grip, there?s nothing wrong with starting the engine and running it with the de-mister and heated rear window on while you do all the scraping
In Kuala Lumpur, according to www.worldclimate.com the average minimum temperature ranges from 71.6 to 73.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

It has a certain charm, more coordinated than the new Focus, and probably looks better from the rear than anything Mr Bangle has dispatched from Munich lately.

To play Devils Advocate for a moment: While you are saying you 'would be very surprised' if his accusations are true, Clarkson has actually driven the car in question, while you have not, so his opinions does hold slightly more weight.
Added to that your moniker being 'Mondeoman' suggests you might be a bit biased ;)
|
Well if Ford would like to lend me a 2.2 tdci for a week I would be delighted to write a report on the car and i'm pretty sure it would be more informative than sundays drivel in the Times. By the way I assume you are a bear called Barry!!

By the way I assume you are a bear called Barry!!
How did you guess?! ;)
Anyway, my point was just that you may quite possibly be right that the review is incorrect, but you don't actually have any evidence for that at all, it's pure supposition.
Clarkson on the other hand has tested the car, so his opinion holds more weight that your unfounded disbelief.
|
i think the whole point of this thread is that the column in the times on sunday was neither informative or interesting, and I doubt whether anyone would base a buying decision on it so Ford might as well give me the car and let me enjoy it as oppossed to Mr. Clarkson who should stick to Ferraris and definatly not diesels

I reckon 80,000 miles in a 2.0 TDCi is probably a better reflection on Mondeo diesels i.e. the way they perform, the way they drive, how they are to use day-today (inc the 2.2 which is basically the same engine) than Clarkson's five minute drive having just jumped out of his SL55 or similar.
|
Its a shame he did not answer some questions about the 2.2tdci like why Ford found it necessary to increase the engine size to get the same power as the germans get out of 1.9/2.0 and why Ford don't have the option of specifying sensible wheel/tyre sizes for the ST. By the way your comment about 80,000 miles is very relevant as I think the engine gets better and better with age, a point which even puts me off buying a new one especially when you have the teething problems to endure
|
why Ford found it necessary to increase the engine size to get the same power as the germans get out of 1.9/2.0
Hi Mondeoman, I think you may have missed the point of the 2.2 TDCi, like the 2.0 TDCi it is all about torque, in addition to 155ps it produces 400nm torque, more than almost all other TD's below 3.0ltrs, much much more 3.0 petrol and much more than the German 1.9's and 2.0 TD's you refer to, approx figures below.
VW PD 130 / 130ps / 320nm
VW PD 150 / 150ps / 330nm
BMW 2.0 / 150ps / 330nm
BMW 2.0 '1'series / 163ps / 340nm
BMW 3.0 / 204ps / 410nm
BMW 3.0 petrol / 231ps / 300nm
Laguna 2.2 / 150ps / 320nm
Vauxhall 1.9 / 150ps / 315nm
Vauxhall 3.0 / 177ps / 370nm
Mondeo 2.0 / 130ps / 350nm
Mondeo 2.2 / 155ps / 400nm
C-Max etc 2.0 / 136ps / 340nm
|
I forecast a healthy business for gearbox reconditioners in the next few years.....
|
Hi, Gearboxes should not be a problem, we have had engines producing 400nm plus for years it is just that before now they have typically been a 4.5 ltr V8, not a 4 cyl TD!
