Can anybody offer some advice about a Zafira clutch/gearbox fault on my sister's 2 and a half year old car? Basically, with the engine running, you can't select any of the gears. However, if you put it in gear and then start it, you can drive it (but only in that gear). Had to drive it home in 2nd for her after it expired in Edinburgh at the weekend.

I'm thinking a hydraulics or a vacuum problem but would like some second opinions. Thankfully she's decided just to get it fixed and then sell it as it has been a disaster right from the start. Read more

I'm trying to find an address for pug uk. You wouldn't think something like this would be so difficult!

After finally getting through to the official website, the address is not there!

I couldn't find it in the HJ 'Directories' either.

I am going to write to them to say that I was going to buy a pug, but now I won't. After having recently (thanks to HJ's BR) become aware of Pug's ability to catch fire, and an ongoing - pollution control fault, Peugeot's slack attitude to customer service regarding this.

I believe that we as consumers have to write letters of this nature to let companies know they have lost business because of poor quality, service or morality/ethics.

So can someone give me the address please? Read more

Hi all,
I'm thinking of buying an ST220 Mondeo. I've just discovered the ST220 is a 3.0L V6, not the 2.5L I used to own in an ST24.
The one thing I'm concern about is the fuel economy. This you might find odd if I'm considering buying a car like this. The fact is that the ST24 I owned a few years back produced an average of 18mpg, being an American built Duratech V6 lump, I dont think they were too concerned with economy.
The Mitsubishi Galant 2.5L V6 I own now does 28 - 35mpg, although it has less power than the Ford it delivers it in a way that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two.
The ST220 engine I notice is a Zetec 3.0L V6, the Duratec has been discontinued in the Mondeo V6 range.
Does anyone know if the Zetec V6 is better or worse for economy as the Duratec was. If Ford discontinued the Duratec in this country for it's gas guzzeling tendancies I wouldn't be suprised.
Any info on actual fuel stats for the ST220 would be sorted.
P.S. The only other car I'm thinking of buying is a Mitsubishi Galant VR4 2.5L Twin T. Does anyone own one of these? Any views on it? Ie, if a Turbo blows how much for a new un?

Dan J,
thanks for the reply regarding the answer to my original question. The ST220 petrol engined Mondeo does around 25mpg.
This sounds good to me.
As for ever owning a Diesel. I owned a 1.7L Corsa N/A Diesel once. In a moment of madness I bought this, and regretted for the duration that I owned it. Fair comment it had no Turbo. Well to be honest, it didn't have anything. You might say Diesels have come a long way since 1997. This may be true, but I'll never know because I'm never going to own an oil burner agian. Once bitten twice shy innit.

Hi,

I'm looking to spend £6000 to £8000 on an A4 diesel (2000 or 2001 year model). I found a website called audidiesel (you can find them by searching google), they seem to be doing good business. I was wondering if you guys have any experience with this company. They specialise in high mileage audis.

How do A4 diesels hold up against high mileage (110,000 miles)? Will I be looking at massive repair bills some time in the future? I would like to put at least another 150,000 miles on it.

Cheers

I still have a passat 1999 diesel 1.9tdi, don't use it much these days, 190,000 miles, been out today mainly flat rural roads got 68 mpg indicated (it does over read so really only 62 possibly) I have driven the later passat (vag) diesels 130pd and the higher rated one, and actually prefer this old 110 bhp AFN engine and it's very quiet even with the now disintegrated engine top sound foam deadner. It will be hard to ever let it go. I purchased it with 60k with cam belt done from a family owner, changed belts myself at 120k and then 5 years at 145k (milage dropped) now at 6.5 years later waiting to run it into the ground, (at 45 thou miles the years can increase from the specified 5 for replacement in my book) :-) Also worth mentioning (although embarrassing) I have not replaced the water pump, I admit to risking it by not replacing at the last belt change.

I do check the belts but unbelievably they 'look' ok - hopefully testing fate now....

HI,

Some may remember that I recently bought a high mileage (now 198,000) 75 for a low price, glad it was low as yesterday I experienced my first problem.

I went to start up and all I got was a clicking noise coming from the engine bay. I rang my breakdown cover and they thought it was the battery so tried to start it using jump leads...no luck.

Next they diagnosed the starter motor sticking, so pushed it down the hill and bump started it (wasnt very happy about this as I cant see catalysts being cheap), and it eventually started. They then revved the engine to 4000 revs from cold (making me even more unhappy) and then turned it off, failed to start and then did the same again.

I had to leave the engine running for an hr whilst I found a garage and then drove about 15miles. I got to the garage and tried to restart the car - started first time!!

The garage has just rang me this morning saying it started first time from cold and cant find a problem.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be...i've got about 1000 miles to do next week and cant afford for it to let me down altogether.

Hello all

Mine's an (03) MG ZTT 2.0 CDTi (Automatic), very same symptoms as described here. Currently garaged as mechanic couldn't accurately identify problem, even with one of those computer diagnostic machines hooked up. Will pass info on though and hopefully it'll be a straightforward fix? Fingers crossed eh??...

The car is a 1999 Vauxhall Vectra 2.0l petrol (X20XEV engine).

A few days ago the engine developed a ticking noise that goes up and down with the revs - barely audible when you're in the car but if you're standing next to it, you can hear it. The best way I can describe it, is it sounds like a diesel engine! Also, when the car comes to a stop, the oil light comes on and then goes out after a few seconds.

There is plenty of oil in the engine as it was Vx serviced 7k miles ago. Any help with diagnosis would be greatly appreciated.

"PS - I change the oil in my Xsara 1.9TD every six months, and it goes jet black practically instantly. Should I be worried?"

NO - The majority of diesels do this. Its due to the large amount of sooty deposits that diesels generate and the relativly large amount of detergents in diesel formulated engine oils. The detergents in the clean oil will remove alot of these deposits as soon as its put in and these deposits will remain in suspention hense the oil seeming to go black as soon as its put in.

Hope this puts you at ease

Am unable to lock the doors on a Peugeot 206, whether by using the key in either lock or using the remote plip. With the doors and boot shut, the central locking just locks the doors briefly and then unlocks again as though one or more of the doors are open. Have looked inside the hinge bit of the doors and there's a small black cylindrical bit of plastic so is this the sensor? Tried cleaning it but to no avail. Not sure where the boot one is so was hoping someone could give me a clue as to why the locking mechanism's behaving like this! Read more

Thanks for the suggestions. Gonna see what the local dealer has to say about it and take it from there.

Thought I would seek advice on this as someone may know the answer.

The heater on my sister\'s car will not give out hot air. The cooling system is full, I have checked that the fan and also that the temperature switch that controls the fan works.

My thoughts are that it could be the thermostat or possibly a blockage in the heater matrix. I am however reluctant, unless I have to, to flush the cooling system with a chemical to remove any contamination in case the system springs leaks.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,

>>Also check that your thermostat is not stuck open, your heater fan is working at all speeds, the various vents are open and that the heater matrix is not blocked or has an air lock.

During the spring No Dosh Cottage underwent a bit of TLC and is now a rather fetching shade of yellow.

Sadly, so are the myriad minute spots on Mrs No Dosh's chosen mode of transport, which we will be advertising for sale shortly as the arrival of the Mitsubishi approaches.

We didn't notice it at the time and are a little surprised at just how far the paint travelled!

Does anyone have any ideas on ways to remove tiny spots of masonry paint from a lacquered solid paint finish? I don't want to use any kind of abrasive as this will be through the lacquer before any paint spots come off.

Mild solvents? Petrol? Gentle and oft-repeated application of thumbnail?

All help gratefully received.

Thanks a million to Martin for pointing me in the direction of a clay bar. My considerate neighbour decided to paint his house on the windyest day this year in Hastings - result: thousands of little spots of white Weathershield, and half-hearted apology and hours of frustrating work with the fingernails thinking "there must be another way!". Did a search on the net, came up with the No Dosh Cottage thread, rushed out to the car accessory shop and bought the Meguiars version of clay bars and little more than an hour later most of the spots (i.e. those I could see) are gone. Thanks again.

My 3 and a half year old Zafira broke down on Friday. Vauxhall dealer says it needs a new gearbox. It has been serviced by Vauxhall from new. I think that is unacceptable on a car with 45000 miles. Have others had problems with gearboxes? Am currently waiting on a response from Vauxhall. Read more

>>Although I understand the sentiment of what you write, this is a bit of a sweeping statement to make. Plastic is not necessarily bad, just because it's not metal! Correctly sized, and correctly lubricated, use of non-metal bearing cages can be perfectly okay, and in some cases of course, better than metal.

You made the point correctly lubricated.Lack of oil was also a point mentioned. As I recall plastic/nylon bearing cage. Is resistant to oil/water.so has no effect on bearing cage.Heat will do. as bearings failed would assume lack of oil.You also mentioned early metro? fail to see where early one comes into it? different motor?
