As fitted to a McCulloch Strimmer

This is one of those clever carbs that pumps it self and can be operated at all angles. It also regularly gums it self up so that every year I spend more time rebuilding it than using the strimmer. (Despite the fact that I try to wash it out at the end of each season). It has always been difficult to start, but Instant Start does what it says on the tin.

Can any body supply info (or better still a manual) for what the 3 adjusting screws are supposed to do and how to set them up correctly please. If I was in the UK I would try the Haynes garden manual but I doubt whether it has this carb in it.

An internet search has proved fruitless, although the American manuals for hedge trimmers with 21 pages looked promising until I found that it contained 19 pages of 'Safety information' like, .......if operator label is defaced return the unit to your dealer for rectification....

Mods since this is IC engine and technical I hope you will tolerate posting here (or move to I have a question...

Has anyone ever owned a micra with the CVT box and are they any good? Would you buy one a 52 model with 10k on clock? Or would you go for a newer model with standard 4 speed box? Read more

All DAF cars had CVT - Variomatic transmission, to be precise. And a good, sensible and remarkably reliable system it was - and is if you see www.dafownersclub.co.uk.

But as with some current companies, external and internal ranglings etc meant that the future was not to be, so to speak.
And, of course, it was either mistakingly or intentionally misunderstood by too many "influential" people...

You should still be able to find one of the last Volvo 340s around made in 1992, which had the DAF rubber-belt Variomatic transmission - not that Volvo would admit it, as they thought it no good for their image.

Williams did make a F1 car about ten years ago with a van Doorne CVT (DAF descendent) fitted. David Coulthard tested it a lot and spoke highly of it. I still have a video of him putting it through its paces around Silverstone.

Unfortunately, such was the improvement in performance over a manual type 'box, that the rules were changed so that "automatic cars cannot be used in F1".

I have a 406 HDI 90. Today a warning light appeared which I have not seen before. I appears to look like the outline of an engine and is to the right of the ignition (battery) light. Unfortunately the Haynes manual does not help. It is due for an oil change but I have never seen this light before previous services.
Your help would be very much appreciated before I contact a Peogeot dealer Read more

Find a Peugeot specialist (or indeed any clued up workshop) with generic diagnostic kit.

We've got it and can diagnose and repair the HDi systems.

When I switch the ignition off the radio now stays on for about 5 minutes. Previously it always switched off with the ignition. Is this a fault or have I inadvertently programmed it to do this? Read more

CG

The radio on my 406 (2000 X) can be used whether or not the key is in, but if used parked up it will run for 30 mins before entering 'economy mode' and shutting down - and can then only be used after the engine has been started, when you get another 30 minutes. An annoying feature if you want to listen for more than 30 mins with the engine off, but useful in terms of battery saving I suppose. It would be nice if the owner could extend this period, but that's asking an awful lot from Peugeot. (Another really irritating device on the 406 is a press button for dash illumination level - press many times to increase then decrease the level. It's badly placed and a pain to use!)

"A pensioner who warned motorists of a police speed trap was convicted of wilfully obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty, banned from driving and ordered to pay £364 costs yesterday.
Harding said he had stood at the same spot, on the A325 at Farnborough, on previous Sundays warning drivers of the car boot sale, and had received a thumbs-up sign from a passing police car. But the attitude of officers changed when he warned drivers of the speed camera."

Hi all,

I am new to your forum so forgive me if I have made this post in an incorrect way or form.

I am looking to purchase an Vectra 2.5 V6 from a London Local Authority who have confiscated the car from someone for whatever reason. They have a key for the vehicle, but not a chipped one, hence they cannot start the car.

Is it possible to get a new key cut which will work with the immobiliser? If so would that be a main dealer job?

Any info appreciated.

Many Thanks

Relatively easy. The system only needs the chip near the ignition when it's switched on, and once it's running, for safety reasons, it doesn't have to be there. So prise open key and remove chip. Close key, hold chip near key and switch on. Start car. Bingo, it runs. Take chip away, and it continues to run.

Turn it off though, and it won't start again until it 'sees' a chip it recognises.

Can't ask the specific question of what to look out for, I'm afraid. But to build on other posts, if the budget really is around £2k, then I would spend my money on a Range Rover with a Japanese diesel engine conversion. They are problems inherent with this (need for stronger front springs, inevitable problems with the throttle cable) and inherent problems with old Rangies (chasis rust, sagging doors if it is a 3-door), but done well, they can be a great workhorse.

LRO mag usually has some in the classifieds.

Given Toyota's deserved reputation for reliability, as others have said, if it is only worth £2k, it will have gone a very long way and probably been pretty abused

good luck
