Can anyone help please to solve this mystery. On my son's '97 Ibiza the clock only works with the ignition on. On my wife's Ibiza the clock works correctly all the time. I have gone to the trouble of changing the complete instrument binnacles over from car to car and the situation is then reversed. This suggests that the circuit up to the binnacle multiplug is at fault (ignition switch connection perhaps) but so far I've been unable to trace the fault. Totally unable to follow the circuit diagram in Haynes. Any ideas how to trace and correct please? Read more

Thanks to all for all the comments. I know it's a relatively trivial problem but it's a niggle staring you in the face all of the 'time'. It's an analogue clock therefore presumably needs no feed from the ignition switch.
As you say Mech 1 it probably should be connected to the radio memory (which is OK) but the problem with multiplugs and printed circuits etc. is tracing what is connected to what. All the looms look intact and there don't appear to be any loose wires.

My wifes 25 has a slight knocking noise that appears to be coming from behind the engine. It is noticable when the engine is cold, but quietens down when warm. There is no noticeable drop in performance.
Any ideas?

This does sound like piston \'slap\' and the only real cure is to have new teflon coated pistons, which to be fair is not worth doing if no damage is being done. The only ones I know which get repaired are under the Rover 3 year warranty(from new).

No, not the car but a fuel card scheme which gives drivers cheaper diesel (69.3p today).

Anyone using them or had experience of them

Does anyone know if they allow individuals to join? They have a Shell garage near me, so they serve my preferred diesel.

HJ advised an owner of a 130bhp VW Golf to keep the engine revs between 2 and 3000rpm to maximise the fuel economy.
Admitedly this was for a six speed gearbox.
I've tried this in my Passat 100bhp 5 speeder.
I found myself driving generally two gears lower than normal.
According to the computer the fuel economy was worse than usual.
What is the reasoning behind the advice?

My car has the PD 130 engine and 6-speed gearbox. It's definitely at its most economical when the speed is kept below 2000 rpm and the highest gear possible is used, without labouring the engine.

Got a Peugeot 406 1.9 diesel which had a slight prang yesterday. Not hard enough to set the air bags off, damage is only cosmetic toi the front end. The problem is, it won't start! When I try to enter the imobiliser start code, normally red LED is on until correct code is entered, then the green LED comes on. But now, both LEDs are on.

Is there something that has detected the impact and imobilised the engine, that can be reset?

Many thanks, for any help. Read more

Thanks guys,

I found the inertia switch which had tripped. It runs fine now.

It seems the radiator not go undamaged.Long shot, afriend has a good one from a petrol 306, will it fit?
I know what you're thinking, compare the two, but he is a long way off, and not havinga car....

Thanks again,

Hi, I am about to replace the cylinder head on a M-reg 306DT. Does anybody know which of the Pug/Citroen varients have the same head? I.e. Pug405DT? I am sure a 405 head will be cheaper at the scrapyard than a 306 head. Thanks Read more

Thanks for the info. Apparently the old cylinder head was more like a sieve on the pressure test. I am based in Oxford and no longer have the old cylinder head to recover the injectors so it would be a bit of a faff to get your cylinder head here Richie (thanks anyway). I'll try the spares forum. Cheers

Nothing to worry about, it's just blowing off the moisture it collected from the last time it was run.

Hi

i have had a honda cicic 1.6 esi for a few years the only problem i have with it is that the power steering is too light. It is fine for parking but feels way too sensative at speed, you really need to concentrate on what you are doing with the wheel. is there any thing that can be done to increase the "weight" of the steeing wheel?
cheers

Hi Al,

I have a Civic LSi, I have always found the steering perfectly weighted except for when I exceed approx 75 mph, when it does start to feel lighter and more twitchy. Sticking to 70 it is fine.

Have you checked your tyre pressures?

Ed.

Hi,

I have a Citroen Xsara (1.9TD) and last week I managed to lose the key. As I had no space I ordered a replacement, which typically caused the old set to turn up 10 minutes later!

I've decided to have the replacement anyway, as it's a PITA when you lose your keys. However, I think Citroen are trying to screw me with the cost.

So far, I've been charged £20 for the key, £50 for the remote, and £20 to look up the transponder codes. (Previous owner lost the red card).

However, the key has apparantly arrived but they have no decided that they need my car plugged into their computer to write the new code into the chip, and they want an additional £30 for this. They didn't tell me this when I ordered the key!

They charged my credit card in advance, and presumably they'll want to add this £30 on to it. I'm tempted to ring them up, tell them I don't want it any more, and then leave it to the credit card company to sort out.

Is it essential that my car is used? If they can program through the car, why did I get charged for the codes? Read more

Ben79

They need the car and the code to program all keys to work. The engine immobiliser also needs to see all the keys before they will work.

Just a quick question really...

I often see the overhead gantry variable speed limit signs on when i am driving in the early hours of the morning.

They will be on for just a couple of stretches of road, then off again, but for that period will show (usually) 50mph, and sometimes even lanes closed off. However there is absolutely no activity on the road whatsoever in the way of roadworks, accidents, bridge maintanence etc. and i have come to assume that the lights have been accidentally left on.

What are the legalities here? Is it something to do with whether or not the orange lights are flashing, or if the speed is in a red circle?

And would i get done for not obeying them when it is quite clear that they are wrong? Read more
