My father in law has just given up driving at 81. He has owned his Hyhundai 1.5 MVi from new. It is a 98R with metallic silver paint. It even has a leather covered steering wheel, alloy wheels and a boot spoiler. The mileage is 9102.A new clutch has just been fitted. What is it worth ?

He has kindly given it to my wife. She is thinking of keeping it to replace her underpowered 97 4 door Astra with 80,000 on the clock. The 1.4 Astra is underpowered but convenient for our two young children with 4 doors and central locking.

The Hyhundai is rather nippy but in my opinion hideous but then I will not be driving it.

I was going to say £1,500 on a good day, roughly the same as the Astra. However the only two cars matching the description on AutoTrader are both being offered at a ludicrous £3k, so perhaps a little more might be achievable.

While the low mileage means the car is almost certainly cosmetically perfect, if your father's driving style can kill a clutch in 9k miles, what can it do to the rest of the car? This is likely to be a classic case of a car that's never been run in and is suffering all of the problems of under use, which will then whither when put to the more extensive use your wife will make of it.

Personally, if the Astra's not doing the job and the Hyundai is just hideous, I'd get shot of both and get one car to do the job.

Saw one today at Sheffield train station. Surely THE most inappropriate car in Britain? Anyone know its fuel consumption, GPM? Looks rather mean though, don't think I'd like it to be behind me on motorways as it's massive and also its headlights appeared to be far too high.

Althougher amazed by the size of it, not a chance of parking in one bay...

"As trancer mentions upthread", and 14 years ago you mean?.

The H2 is surely a lot less 'niche' than a proper Hummer?. And as for capability, that depends on what you want it to be capable of doing. If you need to transport more than 4 occupants, have a usable and versatile load space, be less wide than a truck then the H2 knocks the original for 6, despite not actually being very good.

I have a Drapers Fault code reader and I can\'t seem to find the 2-Pin connector to check the fault code. I know it\'s green and supposed to be near the ECU or relay box.

I have a Peugeot 306 1997 2.0 XSi 8v. Any help would be great. Read more

No probs.
If you can't find it there, or if no-one replies, then try www.306gti6.com (I'm a club member - we're all friendly on there) - someone on there will definitely know, we were chatting about these Draper units a while ago coz somebody bought one :-D

Hello everyone,
After my last inquiry about the heavy steering it turned out to be a universal ball join, so it's all fixed. However, nothing is ever that simple, and it's now started doing something new.
It starts, then almost immediately stalls. With careful balancing of the accelerator (and a few stalls later) it can be pursuaded to keep going, and once it gets warm it stops stalling.
I've tried new HT leads and sparks. I think it might be the temperature sensors, if I check their resistance with a multimeter what should they read? Someone suggested cleaning the breathing tubes, how would I do that?
Thanks everyone for your continuing help! If only ford made better cars.....

Result! I took the tube off and cleaned it out, and also cleaned the oil filler cap. The latter was really blocked up. Also had a wipe round the air filter housing. Tried the car and it started with no problems, for the first time in weeks!

There was quite a lot of oil at the top of the carb however, and the little light coloured plastic thing in the middle is quite burnt. Is that bad? What should be done about it?

Thanks,
Sam

Came within inches of having an accident this morning on a roundabout I've moaned about on here before and was just wondering if people could comment who would have actually got the blame had the accident actually happened? (Of course, I'm sure it wouldn't have been my fault! :)

Basically, I was going straight on at a roundabout (exit actually just before what straight on would be). Used left lane at the roundabout. Big 4x4 with scary bullbars pulls up beside me while we wait for traffic to clear. We both join following a van which is using the same exit as me. I assume the 4x4 is going further around and he's behind me anyway. The van pulls up just off the roundabout exit and at the same time I realise the 4x4 has launched himself off the roundabout beside and just behind me. I of course now need to pull out to avoid the van but if I pull over I'd be moving straight in to his path. (Single lane exit but just about wide enough for two cars to come off but it does narrow quickly)

Luckily the 4x4 realised the van was stopping as well and chucked the anchors on so I could go around the van but had he not, he would have effectively have pushed me in to the van...

IMO the road layout is bad because it allows this sort of daft thing to occur, combined with lack of discipline in drivers around here... So, who's fault and how to avoid this sort of thing in future? (Other than walking or finding a route without roundabouts!) Read more

OK, trying to answer as many of the points as I can...

The van actually pulled over from the inside of the roundabout - I had been half expecting him to carry on round so I ended up nearer to him than is sensible I will admit. Rather than slam the anchors on to increase the gap, I simply did not accelerate, leaving him to create the gap by his acceleration. However, he braked and just stopped just off the roundabout with no signals to show this, although of course it's impossible to signal clearly in this situation as you should have been signalling left to show you were exiting. (I *think* he was looking for someone to pick up) As the road is single lane at this point I simply went to pull around him. However, when I glanced in the mirror before pulling out, I realised the 4x4 was trying to fit in a gap that wasn't there. If I'd have braked I'd still have missed the van but the 4x4 would probably have not been able to stop in time and short of running over a kerb and bollard would have hit me. My instinct was to boot it and get around the van, luckily the 4x4 slowed when he saw the van and I was able to get around OK.

Daft this is if I'd been further back from the van on the exit, the 4x4 would probably have dived for that gap although I'd have been in a position to see it was going to do so easier.

Although you'd have to see the roundabout to know whether or
not you were correct to go straight on using the outside
lane of the roundabout whereas perhaps that should have been
for people takng the first exit.

No road markings which doesn't help, but the roundabout has three exits, one very sharp left which is normally never used as there is a cut-through just before (currently closed off though for building work). The second is a continuation of the road I join on, the third 270deg round. The roundabout itself is very narrow so common sense is needed at the best of times. Looking at Multimap actually suggests the second exit is slightly over 180 deg so I guess technically should be right hand lane, but if everyone did use the right lane then the left lane would be useless as the first exit isn't used. Certainly 99% of drivers use the left lane to continue on and treat is as a two-exit roundabout.

Camry or QX - obviously none of you are keen drivers.....

On the contrary, I'm a keen driver and in addition to the QX own an MB C-Class, have owned Alfas, BMW's etc. etc. I am also in the fortunate position of working in the motor industry and having the opportunity to drive all manner of prestige cars as part of my job. I was in Germany last week doing engineering consultancy for a 'well know prestige car manufacturer'. I had one of their highline models as a loan car - very nice too....

However, its horses for courses and for the majority of family folk (especially in England, where it is now rather difficult to drive a car 'enthusiastically' on public roads) a Japanese saloon is the best bet. Reliable, cheap to run, and actually not that bad to drive. Big Japanese cars are tremedous bargains.

Piece in the Torygraph today about an EU Directive that by 2010 all cars will have hydraulic bumpers and airbags to reduce pedestrian casualties. Manufacturers say will increase cost of an average car by £3,500. Insane.

They could make a start by banning and forcibly removing all bull bars - cost next to nothing.

I saw my first 407 in the flesh the other day, nice, but it does look as though it's going along trying to swallow bugs!

Apparently they're going to put a similar front on the facelifted 307. I'm not a fan of facelifts on cars, they rarely look better than the original design, but in this case it would be an improvement.

Hi, I blew the head gasket in my 306 td yesterday, this is the second time and I think this time was a result of damage from the last time. Anyway, I sourced a different cylinder head which I know to be excellent, not warped or cracked and a very trusted source. Anyway, I put the head on, swapped the injectors over neww gasket etc etc. However the car simply will not fire up now. I have cked the timing and it all seems fine as all 'locking' holes line up properly and the timing belt tension is right and even throughout. the stop solenoid in the pump has been checked and is fine, it appears to be getting fuel through as the glow plugs get damp if you crank the engine by hand. The glow plugs have been checked and are glowing as expected. There is no pressure coming back through the coolant and you can here it 'popping' through the exhaust as it is turned over. The fuel pump has not been disturbed so the pump internal timing should be fine. It is not an immobiliser problem.
Its cracking me up, can anybody shed any light on other possible causes? Read more

Yes, got the car started as above, next morning started again to check for sparks, and there was none, so I revved it a bit, nothing, revved harder and nothing again. So full on revved and held, whilst cowardly hiding behind the wing peeking over and heard a tinkle sound, behold the mangled washer from the I/C that had been stuck in the flywheel!!!!
Cars now running fine, no pressure builds, no overheating, no misfire's.
