March 2004
We have been looking at these two cars to buy at about 12 months old. SWMBO likes the Corsa, I prefer the build quality of the VW. Probably not much between them in terms of reliability or mpg. Both quite nice to drive, given limitations of a small car.
Corsa will be cheaper to fix, VW has better resale values but costs more in the first place. VW has nicer and better quality trim and has galvanised panels. Corsa looks nicer and most towns have a dealer. So we have a problem deciding.
What do others think? Which would you take given a free choice? Read more
The link to the website in Andrew's profile, and the link in HJ's preferred suppliers no longer work. Does anyone have a contact for one of the team please (Surrey). I'm not keen to go to the yellow pages as there are so many mobile tuners, and it's not clear which are part of this trusted group.
Email address is in my profile if one of them sees this.

If you read Tom Holt's book "Falling Sideways", you'll find that Honest John is in fact God.
Actually, there's quite a lot more to Honest John's character than that, but I don't want to give the whole complicated plot away. Fun story, similar in some respects to "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", though not quite as good.

Somebody once told me about the major diversion routes, signed from the motorways etc with little yellow circles, triangles, etc. Do they really work ( when the motorways are closed, etc ) ?

Experienced them in operation around Glasgow years ago, and it made it easier than trying to follow vague signs saying just "diversion", or complex signs showing multiple routes for different destinations. "Follow the square" was much easier!
Hi everyone
My Honda Jazz is only classed CAT 2 as it has only an immobiliser. Where can I find out which is a good CAT1 Alarm.
I've been to Thatcham site but this is confusing. Honda offer a Cat 1 alarm but want £555 + fitting, this is too expensive. Is there a site where I can compare alarms? Read more
I fitted a Clifford Concept 300 to my Legacy and it has been fine. The main unit is guaranteed as long as you keep the car. Cost £346 fitted.
My wife has a 1997 (Mark 3) VW Golf and the follwing events occur almost on a daily basis -
(1) Cuts out whilst driving at normal speeds. the car then fails to start, although the engine turns. After about 3 minutes, the car fires up normally.
(2) Everytime she fills the car up with petrol, she gets back into the car and again, it won't start for about 5 minutes.
The car has been to three local mechanics but they are all scratching their heads. The RAC man couldn't figure it out either. Does anyone have any ideas or have seen this before?
Thanks, Gavvers Read more
Hi,
I currently have a similar problem on my 1993 Polo, except your lucky in the sense that it starts in 5 minutes instead of the 20 mine can take. However, it does not stall much these days, which it used to prior to me changing the distributor cap and rotor arm. I have a feeling that Big Cat may be right, as the Hall sender was oily in mine which used to cause terrible running problems like jerking (rev counter jumping all over) and indeed stalling (where the rev counter would fall to 0, when it was still in gear rolling along at 30mph.) Try here first, looking to make sure the connection is clean, dry and secure. Failing that, Adam Going (tune up) may be right, try reading the voltages from the coil during the problematic starting period. On my Polo these were a little on the low side, so I changed it for a second hand one. This cured the problem for a little while but now the problem is back. What if you stop somewhere for 5 minutes, (say, the newsagent) will it restart? Moreover, does it do this when the engine is warm or cold, as mine always runs perfectly when cold, but once warm, is a pain to re-start?
Hope this is of some help
Does anyone know the firing sequence on a 1991 Proton SE? Having trouble remembering which HT goes goes where on the distibutor cap! Read more
I'd say that by convention no. 1 is at the timing chain/belt end. (It may not be much help to say:) If you run a Mercedes W123, the distributor cap is marked up with the cylinder numbers (1 to 4, as per above convention). It might be worth a check to see if your Proton is too, but I wouldn't hold out much hope.
Does anyone have experience of folding bikes?
I know the drawbacks, but I want one to take with me to France. Makro have one on offer this week for £175 (including VAT).
It is alloy with a six speed Shimano gripshift gear change. It looks a good spec and a good price.
Any advice? Read more
Robbie,
I had a couple of Dahon folding bikes for a few years, did not find them altogether satisfactory. Always felt a bit like a circus act with the tiny wheels and frame, and the well extended saddle to accomodate my height. Nothing like as stable as a conventional bike either, but they were rigid and folded quickly and neatly.
Whilst I was in U.S.A. saw a demonsration of a bike labeled as a Scwietser which has a full size conventional frame and normal sized wheels. Its ability to fold was the result of the main frame folding at the saddle and lower frame joint allowing the front frame handlebars and forks to fold over the rear, the front wheel is held in with easily undone wing nuts and the front brake caliper has a special caliper which enables the front wheel to be removed in seconds.
I contacted them from the U.K. and they advised me that Raleigh was marketing them here. I ordered two from a local bike shop and have been entirely satisfied, frankly you would not know it from a conventional bike if you did not know.

Agree RF, it did look rather strong, Ill definitely try to avoid hitting one!
My parents have just got one, its very nice indeed. Really smart inside aswell, all the toys
Started my annual phone around and first company I contacted asked "do you smoke?" (I do, but never in the car).
I don;t see why they want to know that (more PC nonsense?) and especially why they had no interest in the fact that I don't drink alcohol.

Maybe they were thinking of offering you life insurance?
And the Civic! I'd buy one like a shot. I don't know why they even bothered doing a Civic CTDi (or whatever it is). Why would people, esp. private buyers, bother buying a Honda with an Isuzu engine in it, that gets write-ups of the "Well, it's all right, but....." variety seemingly everywhere?
