Had a few minutes spare before a meeting today so had my wheels balanced properly as it was giving me shakes through the steering wheel at speed.

Was wondering what problems come with unbalanced wheels or is it just a wobbly steering wheel? Read more

Normally get steering juder between 30 to 50 mph. This will
waer out suspension and steering gear prematurely.

The above car will start fine when it is cold but after it has been running for a while it is slow to start but it will always go
Has anyone any ideas as to what would be causing this
The engine has only about 40 k on it so compression and the likes should be fine

Have got so fed up with VW garages I have changed my vento auto fluid by syphoning out and replacing about 3 litres of atf. I didn\'t change the filter. How important is an auto gearbox filter ? Read more

Aprilia

On most auto boxes, even if you can drain the box,
you usually can't drain the torque converter, and that holds a
significant proportion of the total fluid content of the unit.

Two ways round that. You either do repeated drain-fill-drive-drain-fill-drive, three or four times. That changes most of it. It you can get ATF at bulk trade prices its not much of a problem. This is what I do.

Alternatively, disconnect cooler pipe and run engine at tick-over whilst refilling 'box. Do it until clean fluid comes out of cooler pipe. Switch off engine and top up.

I was rear-ended in a queue of traffic in my company car yesterday by a young lad in an old Jag. Not my fault, reported it to our accident management folks so it will all get sorted out OK.
But, I have two other insurance policies in my name, one for my son's car with me as the policyholder & him as the main driver and the other a classic car policy on the Commer.

Question do I need to let either of the other insurers know about the company car accident? Would it make any difference if it had been my fault?

Any of you folks who know the insurance world like to comment? Read more

No Do$h

You have a duty to disclose material facts. In this case, yes, you do need to notify your personal insurers and I would suggest you keep on to your accident management people to make sure that it does get closed-off as a no-blame claim. It's all too easy for them to accept knock-for-knock, forgetting that it may have an impact on your personal policies.

I've read the discussion from 2002 about the auto electrical warning light coming on intermittantly for no reason, as it describes exactly what's happening to my Renault 5.

The thread ended with it being booked in for investigation, but there was no explanation or resolution given so if anyone knows what the problem turned out to be could they please let me know?

I'm going to change the fluid and possibly clean the filter this weekend, and also check and clean all the wires/connectors I can find. I suspect that once the warning light is triggered it cannot reset itself so it stays on until the engine is restarted, which makes me hope it could be a relatively simple fault in the wiring rather than a fundamental problem with the gearbox or control unit.

I understand how internal comustion engines and the 4 stroke cycle, but is there a site out there that explains and names more of the components of the engine?

For instance i've heard people talk of big end shells, but I still have no idea what they are! Read more

Try this: auto.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm

Doesn't tell you what big-end shells are, though.

Hello

My tank is corroded and actually dripping. The car is a rover 214 - 8 valve. I\'ve been quoted £250-£300 parts and labour from an independant. Is this a fair price?

Thanks Read more

Doesn't sound too far off the mark - but it might be worth trying a motor factor for a pattern tank - I've fitted a few (Msde in Canada, funnily enough!) with no problems.

Lately, I've noticed a number of Seats with their badges missing. Has this become a desirable badge now, like the VW badges in the 1980s? If I do find mine goes missing, who will pay? Me? My insurance company? Seat? I'm happy to have bought a desirable badge, I just didn't want it to be this desirable.

I used to have a Pug 306 and was surprised to
find that someone had pinched my lion! My sister's VW had
its badge nicked the other day so it seems the Beastie
boy's are still alive and kicking.

Oh no! I was hoping that this was just a copycat crime.

It's bad enough having things nicked, but how are we all supposed to cope with the prospect of a revival of that band?
