There is some play on one of the rear wheel bearings on my Corsa. They are tapered. The haynes manual says replace if the play is "excessive". The question is, what is excessive? The whell does make a noise whe raised off the ground and turned. Anybody know how to make the judgement when to replace it? Read more
I'm looking to have a bid on a car at auction this week, its an ex lease car and is therefore VAT Qualifying.
Am I right in my interpretation that all this means is that 17.5% of the hammer price will be shown on the invoice as VAT?
For example, hammer falls at £11,750 - Invoice says:
Car £10000
VAT £1750
Total Due £11,750 (I've left the buyers fee out for simplicity)
I think I'm right with the above, and not that the hammer price is plus VAT @ 17.5%.
Thanks for any help. Read more
Unless i am mistaken you can recover vat on any type of van because they are classed as commercial vehicles but you are still required to have your business registered with Customs and Excise
Does anyone know anymore info about these engines? My understanding is that they are a 'common rail' petrol engine, if true, what this kind of technology has done for diesels, should make for a fantastic engine? Read more
After my new cylinder head the car ran fine (zero oil consumption) until 60k miles, then it all started again - Oil consumption shot too 1ltr/600miles. Engine mis-fire, sluggish response etc etc
Audi reported that they could not find any problems (They had the vehicle every week for 5 weeks, each time I had it back it would mis-fire within a day!!)
On my last collection the vehicle lasted sub 100 miles when it developed a massive mis-fire and would not re-start. The Audi dealership that recovered my vehicle has now admitted a Valve Stem Seal issue with this type of engine AND the first cylinder head replacement was TOO EARLY to have the fix. My second head in going this week!!! Also - Audi have stopped production with this type of engine BUT have kept the brand name due to image (So new vehicles maybe ok)!!
IF you have one of these DO NOT ACCEPT high oil consumption as normal!!! It will lead to an overheat of the ignition coils, spark plugs, EGR valve and ultimately the exhaust valves!!!
Second hand - avoid them totally as the cost for all the above AND a contaminated CAT would not be worth the hassle!!!
Good luck - My next car will be a Diesel and NOT an Audi one at that!!

In this thread you may ask any question for which you need help, advice, suggestions or whatever.
It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be.
No politics
No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming
No arguments or slanging matches
Nothing which I think is not following the spirit of the thread
Nothing that risks the future of this site (please see the small print for details www.honestjohn.co.uk/credits/index.htm )
Any of the above will be deleted. If the thread becomes difficult to maintain it will simply be removed.
However, as has been said a couple of times, there is a wealth of knowledge in here, much of which is not motoring related, but most of which is useful.

There is no real difference in the source of the messages you're talking about, only the purpose of them. Actually I've worked as a freelancer for a few legit web search companies researching natural language processing techniques to get sites noticed by search engines while excluding the pron sites. The pron sites are of course trying to get themselves noticed, so this is a continuous battle requiring very clever and expensive work on NLP (note I'm an editor, not a linguist: I just apply their work for whichever side is paying).
But part of what I did (this was a couple of years ago now) was work on the human interface part of spam: how do you word messages so that people will be more likely to respond to spam emails (thus proving the address is live)? Of course this has to be constantly revised to take account of new slang terms, popular idioms, world events and so on. Automated natural language processing systems are not yet anywhere near as good at this as humans are. In fact some spam is actually used in researching/testing this stuff as a secondary function: they are learning all the time and it's a massive business. The big pron companies in particular spend millions on language research and are involved in many other internet businesses, including the vi@gr@ and "waste management" systems.
>It just seems that when one spammer has your address others soon follow.
This is exactly my point: once an address is known to be live it will get sold on and is worth much more than a randomly generated one. This is why you should never reply. The randomly generated ones also have value to the spammers in that they get quite a lot of hits anyway (about 7% I believe, which seems quite a lot), but it's a crude method and often used by small-scale chancers: having real live addresses is much more effective. I believe bouncing works (it does for me anyway) because after a while the companies that compile and sell lists remove that address (it costs them bandwidth to receive bounced messages after all). It does take time.
As I say I'm now down to one or two spam emails a week as opposed to forty a day at one time: it goes in waves, usually rising when the latest Windows Worm makes an appearance and another batch of Outlook address books hits the databases. Most of the mail clients are adopting a bounce button so it can't be all hokum, but I accept it's only one weapon.
For the record, in the words of a song: "If I'm not pure at least my jewels are."

Have just discovered that the brake lights on my 1998 Passat are always on when the headlights/rear lights are on. The high level light is also on. When I press the brake pedal there is a slight increase in intensity but not really enough to show that I am braking (or so said my wife who drove behind me last night). Also, when I press the brake pedal after switching the mian lights off the front lights light up at low intensity.
Is there anything simple I could look/fix or is it a trip to the VW garage for diagnostics? Read more
Check the earth wires (I think they are coloured brown on
VW's) from the rear light clusters.
>>
Get yourself three feet of flex. Bare the ends. Fix one end under a bolt that makes a good earth somewhere in the boot area and then use this as a supplementary earh by just touching it on the existing earth of the rear light. If you are not sure which is the earth then put a fuse holder in the flex.
You will soon easily notice if it is a bad earth.
My Sierra and many other cars suffer from a poor earth for back lights so I have added a pair of supplementary earths. Job done.
Anyone removed the fan switch from a 306 recently?
I am trying to find the cause of a non-functional fan for a nephew. I have checked motor, relays, fuses and resistor pack, and all seems OK
I started to remove the heater controls & switch a la Haynes, but after removing all it said (various panels, radio, various controls) and unscrewing the control panel I tried to get it out through the slot in the facia, but couldn't manage it. It seems to me that the facia would have to come out, but hope I am wrong.
The manual shows the heater resistor as having 4 resistors, so even at top speed the current would go via a resistor. On other motors I have worked on the top speed was direct, and lower speeds obtained by letting the supply go through 1,2 or 3 resistors. Is it a error by Mr Haynes?

elekie&a/c doctor you're a star!
I found the multiplug connector just above the clutch thanks to your tip, the two halves had come loose and pushing them together firmly solved the problem, and also got various dashboard lights working e.g. glow plug light and heater control lights.
Many thanks!
Has anyone had experience of claiming under Total Loss Gap insurance? My car was written off two weeks ago and I took the above cover out when I purchased it. Car cost £7400 in June 2001 and I've been offered £2400 by insurance company (currently being hotly disputed by me!) and the Total Loss Gap company have set a figure of £3570 which is the minimum they will accept. This means that I will receive £6300 in total giving me a loss of £1100 on original purchase price. Obviously £6300 is brilliant compared with £2400 especially as the policy cost just £300 for three years cover. The problem seems to be with the Total Loss company using retail value as against (I think) my main insurance company using trade-in value for their estimate. Any comments would be very much appreciated. Maz Read more
You're right and I'm so glad I took the cover out but you know what the best thing is - I'm still alive and a car can be replaced !
Decided to change the oil in wife\'s 1400cc Astra this evening. Found out I do not have enough oil to refill. Can I put 10w-40w diesel oil in to complete the change?
Cheers

Just checked the Mobil website. Mobil 1 meets or exceeds ACEA A3, B3 and B4 and is approved by some fairly weighty manufacturers on this basis.
B4 is the diesel specification for extended oil changes, the kind managed by in-car diagnostics (BMW, Merc) and has to be able to maintain lubricity and detergent values for upwards of 20,000 miles.
To also be rated as A3 indicates that this is perfectly acceptable for modern petrol engines also.
Kwikfit use Mobile Super S or Mobil 1 on their oil changes and they are both confirmed suitable for diesel and petrol cars. I would be reluctant to use a B4 spec oil in an older petrol engine, but then I wouldn\'t want to waste my money on fully synth in an older petrol engine, so not really an issue.
I know if a crack or chip in a windscreen is over a certain size in the drivers line of view, the car will fail an MOT. However mine has a slight scratch not a crack, noticable if you look for it 10cm long in the drivers line of sight.
What are the regualations with regards scratches / can anyone recommend something to polish it out? I was recommended toothpaste but it didn't do anything... Read more
The important distinction is that the wired run vertically not horizontally. This is presmably to reduce the distraction on the eyes as when they are focusing on the road they cross lengthways. Having horizontal strips would mean u have them in both eyes all the time.
I should imagine therefore that a long windscreen scratch would be more distracting if it runs horizontally rather than vertially.
I've succumbed to Rupert's blandishments and got Sky - now I'm trying to plumb it into another room. Tried a wireless transmitter from Maplin - snowy pic so tried a co-ax link but this too is very snowy and won't work with the remote controller eye gizmo at all. It's a long run of co-ax (40m) so I bought very low loss cable but so far it's a dead loss - any thoughts people? Read more
I tried the nuisance call bureau when we were getting about
100 calls a week, at all hours, intended for Epsom Hospital.
Could it just be that your number was similar to theirs? There's nothing BT can do about that except change your number.
'Perceptible play' is what I'd like to see.....
Certainly no more than 2-3mm at the tyre extremity.
