Hi Guy\'s

I have a Corsa 16v 4speed auto,1997 P. i recently brought a headlight flasher kit and there is a switch on it that is sposed to be in the interior how do i get the cable from under the bonet to inside the car. also the kit is designed for full beam headlights and instructions advise be to cut the cable on the full beam and join 2 cables, so one on the cut bit near light and one on other cut bit, if i did that i take it that it it will fail an MOT with the kit on the car and taken to test, if i removed the kit and placed a crimp over the cut bits and the headlights still work would it pass test?

Does anyone have one of these kits? if so do you know if the full beam will still work if the indicator arm is pulled toward or away from body and still work as if the kit wasn\'t there or how ever you would word it. sorry usless on explaining things

got a mental power steering leak .........ive checked the hose,s ...no leaks
looks like its pouring out the pump itself...is this possible..i thought when it leaks it just trickles ...not pours like my leak.......any way ....any suggestions?????? Read more

The pressure side of the power steering system will be running at something like 1500psi. You can thewrefore imagine that even the smallest hole will therefore have fluid pouring out.

DO NOT allow the pump to run dry. If you do, it will take roughly 30 seconds before you will need a new one. If you need to drive the car without the PAS then remove the drive belt for the pump (provided it doesn't drive anything else as well).

Hi all,
It seems that I am plagued by problems but this could be serious so I could do with a bit of advice. I own an N reg Mark 4 Fiesta Ghia (which will be relevant in a minute) A while back, when going down a very steep hill on the way home, a red light lit up. This was the same light that warns that the handbrake is on so I thought that it was the sensor for the handbrake. THe light began to light up on a few more gentle hills and now, does it quite a lot.

Now before you go screaming that I have been driving around with faulty brakes I must point out the following.

a) The brake fluid is at the right level
b) The light illunminates sometimes even when not braking

I have been told that the brake pads on the Ghia models have sensors in to warn when they are low but like I mentioned earlier, I\'m not always braking when the light lights up.

The car is booked to go into the garage tomorrow so hopefully it will be fixed but I just wondered if anyone knew what it was to forewarn me

Many Thanks

Can anyone tell me if when you remove the reversing switch from the gearbox if gear oil should leak out??
Its a five speed 1992 polo so the switch is at the front of the gear box.
Ive checked in the Hayes manual and it doesnt mention anything about the possibility of gear oil leaking out when the switch is removed. Read more

Steve - you'd think it would be the sort of thing the nice men at Haynes would mention, but they dont.

Basically, the switch is below the oil level, and removing it does cause gearbox oil to drain, as I've pointed out here before !

All you can do is top it up again, which I seem to remember is not that easy.

hey ho !

Hi there,

And before you guys tell me I can't remove the cat because of MOT failure, let me explain...

I'm in New Zealand and they don't currently test emissions (although they will do in a few years time). Therefore its legal to remove the cat.

Anyway, I've got a 1995 Nissan Skyline 2.5GTS, and have got the car booked in next week to remove the cat convertor and replace it with a straight pipe. The Cat temperature sensor will be grounded to earth so the warning light won't come on.

All well and good, but then someone told me that it might make the exhaust note sound tinny, and I need a "resonator" fitting instead of a straight pipe.

The car has the original exhaust system fitted, which gives quite a muted sound.

I don't want to gut the cat (sounds painful) as I might want to re-fit it later when emissions are tested.

So, any thoughts on the exhaust note - will it change and sound like a boy-racers souped up Mazda pocket rocket? Do I need a resonator? - This sounds expensive, currently the job will cost me NZ$70.

TIA

No, they don't 'need' back pressure as such, but the engine management system will have been mapped with the standard exhaust system in mind. Reducing the back pressure will have some impact, in particular if the engine uses EGR (which I'm sure this engine does) then reduced back pressure will impact on the amount of EGR (which could be a good thing, of course). Ideally, to make full use of these changes the system should be re-mapped.

As to the 'resonator' - well, all exhaust boxes are resonant at some frequency and are usually filled with a damping material to reduce the 'Q' (quality factor) of the resonance. Quite why it should be necessary to install a resonator box in this case I don't know.

I'm sure someone will be able to help with this.

My brother has had a Sept 97 Mondeo since new, also dealer serviced since new.
When he took it in for service/MOT in August 2003 it was noticed that there was bubbling in the rear doorwells, right in the corner where the downward panel meets the top of the sill and the internal face of the doorwell, basically where the back seats meet the doors.
It was first spotted on the offside but when they examined the nearside early signs were spotted there as well, in exactly the same place. The dealer told my brother that they have had 'half a dozen of these', all in exactly the same area and that he had referred them all to Ford under their anti-corrosion warranty, and that he would add his to the list. The dealer reckons that the offside sill needs replacing and that the nearside one can be cut out and repaired.
Ford have just contacted my brother and told him that they have disallowed his claim as it is 'due to external damage, probably a stone chip' and therefore not covered. When he contacted the dealer he was told that ALL the submitted claims have been refused for the same reason.
Quite simply, my brother is amazed that Ford can claim that seven Mondeo's can all have corrosion in an identical area, and nowhere else and that a stone could squeeze under the door, right up into a tiny corner and chip the paint, and on both sides too!

Now the question is, is this a known problem on Mondeos, certainly there is nothing in the Car-by-Car Breakdown, and have any of you out there experienced the same.

Any feedback would be useful as brother is not going to let it lie and I get the feeling he feels a campaign coming on, not for the first time!

I would hazard a guess that Ford would have trouble making their case stand in something like a small claims court, but I'm not sure if that would aply to this case, there must be some kind of recourse.

It is obvious to any reasonable person that this isn't stone chip damage, I would love to see if they treated HJ differently if he tried to claim, I'm sure the possibility of it been made public wouldn't go down well at Ford HQ :-)

Had a strange experience this afternoon.

Pulled into a busy filling station and, as usual, had to wait to get on a DERV pump while a chap in a 53 Merc filled up. After he had filled up he moved off the pump to let me refuel, nice, thoughtful chap, I thought and promptly filled up.

When I go in to pay the lady behind the till ran my agency card through and then says that leaves £23 to pay for the other transaction. It would appear that the Merc driver hadn't just pulled off the pump, he'd done a runner and now the cashier expected me to pay!

I politely, but firmly, pointed out that I was not going to pay for someone else's fuel, whereupon she called the manager over. I explained that I had seen the Merc driver on the pump before me to which she responded that she only had my word for it as the CCTV wasn't working so they couldn't check therefore she felt that I had probably had the fuel and should pay!

I then pointed out that the till slip showed me buying DERV and the previous transaction was for super un-leaded which would be of no use to me whatsoever, also the total volume of the two purchases exceeded the capacity of my tank.

She then accused me of filling up cans which I had hidden in the back of my van so I took her outside and showed her the inside of the van, which, surprise, surprise was devoid of petrol cans.
In the end it was only the fact that I was noisily demanding, in front of a shop full of people, that she call the police to settle the matter that caused her to climb down and accept that 'You might just be telling the truth, so I think I'll let it rest rather than bother the police.'

To say I was gob-smacked would be an understatement!
I'm still wondering if it was Candid Camera.

I wonder if anyone has had the same problem as me and can tell me what I need to do.

My 51 plate Omega 2.2 DTi CDX is billowing white smoke from under the offside front wing so much so that passing motorist draw my attention to it cos they think i'm on fire.

The smoke fills the cabin with diesel fumes.

The car has been in the dealership twice and the answer from Vauxhall technical department is that a sort of exhaust system is creating the smoke and that this is normal operation also fuel drips from this exhaust pipe under the offside wing.

Choking their customers with CO fumes is normal ?????
