Hawesy1982

Hi all,

I've given up on my '95 M Pug 306 DTurbo, as it seems to have given up on me! I'm pretty confident the head gasket has gone, i dont have the expertise to fix it myself, and i dont fancy the possible repurcussions of just getting that changed, so i'm looking for a buyer.

Whilst i realise i'll be making a big loss whatever happens, what should be be hoping to get for it? A mate of mine has offered £800 for it, with the intention being for him to repair it himself as a 'project'(wish i had that spare money and space for 'projects' like that!).

I'm close to accepting that, but should i hold out for better?

I've put a post in the Classifieds section just in case anyone here fancies a 'project' ;-) Read more

SOLD!

Yesterday, as it went off on a trailer i felt an interesting mixed emotion of sadness and relief! Got my £800 for it too.

Anyway after an MSN chat earlier today, he reckons the air was getting into the cooling system via the hose on the top-right of the engine, which was causing the coolant level light to be on intermittently. He's ordered the parts for a head gasket change, which he'll likely start on by next weekend.

Somehow i feel that post, and probable future updates, should be in 'Technical', but never mind.

I have a 2001 406 SE coupe. I\'m getting rain water draining out of a small hole in the heater blower, and soaking the passenger footwell carpet. At first I thought it was water coming in around the pollen filter housing, (and dropping straight onto the blower), but I now think not. After a heavy downpour I dropped the blower off and found wetness inside the duct wher the air is blown to, ie towards the heater. It only happens when it rains, and it gets quite heavy. How is rainwater getting in here? I have only recently bought the car so don\'t know it\'s full history. Can anyone help? Thanks. Read more

May be the outer seals leaking on the air intake.apart from this I am not aware of any other way water can penetrate.unless the matrix is leaking

I have just renewed my road tax and I am intrigued with the new style display disc with the bar code. Is this just a 'smart' way of reducing theft thereof or are there more sinister 'big brother' monitoring issues? Would a roadside camera be able to read the bar code? If yes, would I be commiting an offence if I obscured just the bar code when the disc is attached to the windscreen? Perhaps I am just being paranoid. Read more

Well I would imagine that Mr Plod would have to stop you to scan the disk. I doubt that road side kit would be able to read the barcode. Look at the trouble bar code scanners can have in supermarkets, and they don't have to deal with dirty windscreens, speeding vehicles etc

Hi, I have noticed for the first time today I apparantly have water leaking into the boot of my car, almost all of the boot underlay is s**den.

I have checked the rubber seals around the hatch and they seem ok, but the metal underneath the seals on each side of the hatch was also wet.

Fingers crossed it may be a one off incident after a recent big downpour, but knowing my luck it is more complex than that. I am open to suggestions. It is a 98 model by the way. TIA.

When I looking for a cheap runaround a few years back I nearly bought a H reg Orion that had been taken in part-ex off an old chap.

Apart from needing a good valet the car had only done a few miles and was virtually untouched. I took it for a test and it ran really well. The dealer wouldn't budge on a daft price tho' and I ended up not having it.

When I looked in the boot, however, there was a ready made plentiful supply of mushrooms and other fungi that must have cultivated in the damp over the years. A known problem with Fords apparently.

With hindsight I could have set up a greengrocers trading out of the rear end of the car.

Hello there,

This is my first time posting here so please bear with me..

I have a BMW 330D E 46, X reg 2000.

After last weekends down pour of rain, i went out to find a swimming pool in the passenger footwell of the car.

I thought it must be leaves blocking the drainage points, so i cleared these out and dried the car out with hairdrier and car heater.

The following day i was greeted with the same pool of water.

Can anybody help me, it is rainwater and not coolant of any kind i have been assured.

I have been trying to get a hold of one of those rare beasts called a BMW SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE, do they really exist or are they a figment of my imagination.

PLEASE SOMEBODY URGENT HELP REQUIRED....

Thank you.

The AA check (like HPI thingy) tells me that the car was never involved in a major accident. Car was fine in rain before, it just seems that after the summer it is now not able to keep water out from the door. Problem has been temporarily solved with a NEXT bag over the door sill. Not pretty but effective.....
Does this help guide anyone as to what the problem is...

I have a 4yr old 406HDi which I've owned for about 4 weeks. I use it to commute 90 miles each way to work and it is been fine. Yesterday, after a short trip (1-2 miles) it refused to start - I left it a few hours and went back in the evening, it started as normal. Today it has just done the same thing, short trip, now won't start. It turns over normally but no sign of firing up. Any suggestions most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Oh that sounds bad. Any chance of posting more details and maybe a picture or so?

Hi All,
Thought I'd start this thread after an incident last night. Driving down a dual carridge way, came up to "my turnoff". This turnoff has a the entrance and exit of a petrol station and the entrance for a town. The junction is sign posted for the town. Started indicating at the 200 yds marker and proceded to enter the slip road. A van came out of the petrol station and onto the sliproad and blocked my path. I had to brake hard, and as the road was damp, the wheels locked and I slid into the rear of the van.
A very dangerous junction as most people exiting the petrol station think people indicating to come off the carridge was are going to the petrol station and not to the town.
Any thoughts? Does anyone else know of more dangerous junctions?

Cheers,

This could be an option, but it is not always possible to drive through the petrol station as it can get quite busy and I would hold up people trying to use the petrol station.
I am thinking of starting a petition in my local town, putting a few in local shops, pubs etc. I am also going to write to the local DoT as was suggested (many thanks) earlier on in this thread and include the results of the petition. A copy will be sent to the local police traffic department and my MP.
I was able to walk away from this accident. It could have been a lot worse. Something has got to be done about this junction before someone isn't as fortunate and ends up hospitalised or losing their life.
When all the details have been sorted out, I will inform other back roomers of which junction this is.

I know this is blatantly obvious to some, but it isn't to me. I'm off shortly to view an S reg Corolla 1.3i SE, it's got 43k and I haven't a clue if it's got a timing chain or cam belt. Which is it anyone and when should they be changed?

Plus if there's any other quick tips to look out for, (I have been through the CBC and How to Buy and Sell cars here).

The dealers actually interested in my old E reg corolla! I didn't mention the lack of working alternator as I might not like the S reg when I drive it anyway! Since a scrap yard want £38 for a replacement alternator for my car and get my old in part-ex, then my mate can't do it for 3 three weeks, I'm stuck. Saw this one and thought I have got to view it, so advice please and many thanks :) Read more

S plate Corolla's have a cam belt. It's only the VVTi engines (from about 'X' plate onwards) that have a cam chain.

While waiting at traffic lights on a roundabout a bus came up in the other lane and went through the lights just as the amber appeared They had obviously seen the lights for the other part of the roundabout change to red and knew the ones in this lane would be changing very shortly. I have no problem with anticipation but the nose of the bus was over the white line before the amber appeared. If he had slowed up more before getting to the lights I wouldn't have had a problem with it as he would have been able to stop without trouble if a light jumper had appeared or if the lights hadn't changed as anticipated he would have been able to pull up before the white line. I felt that at the speed he was travelling it he wouldn't been able to do either but as I was stationery it is quite difficult to be sure.

Is this acceptable 'making progress' or bad behaviour that needs reporting to the bus company?

You've not mentioned the make of car. If it's only held in with a rubber strip (ie, not glued or bonded in) then pop along to your nearest scrapyard.
