I've just bought a car, and it doesn't have any mats. Is there any point in getting any?

Yes or no as the case may be.

But boot liners, definitely, particularly if SHMBO demands the carrying of vast quantities of garden waste and/or building materials. I'm thinking of buying a truck....

Would be interested to know the thoughts of the assorted Backroomers regarding undersealing/rustproofing a modern car.

I know this was all the rage back in the 1970s with various companies such as Ziebart and Dinitrol being popular, and from seeing these "one previous owner - deceased" Escorts, Marinas and Allegros appearing on eBay looking pretty solid, the stuff obviously worked.

However I also concede that car manufacturers have, by and large, come a long way regarding rust prevention measures in the last 25 years.

Car in question is a 1999 Honda Accord with a paltry mileage which I intend to keep - circumstances permitting - for around 10 years. Are there companies out there that still offer this service, what are the costs involved, and would it be worthwhile? Read more

Hmm, whilst not applicable to modern cars, this is very interesting stuff. No mention of a cautious use of hot air gun (or even a hair dryer) either to dry panels especially narrow seams but then I can remove mine ;)

There's still sections I can't treat, the worse is the rear valance just below the rear screen, a nightmare to dry and treat, I've had that replaced recently and I was assured that it was all treated before fitting the new one.

I'll look out for this Ankor Wax as Waxoyl is a s** to put on and I really need something that lends itself to faster and more accurate application.

And a nozzle can reach far more inaccessible places.

Hi all,

My other half owns a Xsara, which seems to have a problem with the heater control which only works on control number 4 and does absolutley nothing on 1,2 or 3.

With winter coming she's in my ear everyday about getting it repaired and is fed up of having to wrap up like a santa claus!

Any ideas??

I just wanted to add that thanks to this thread I have sucessfully fixed a fan fault on my sister's X reg Xsara with aircon.

The fault was that the fan was on full blast all the time. The resistors had gone and were an integral part of the fan motor. Removing and replacing the fan fuse to turn the motor on and off was too inconvenient for my sister (I dont blame her). I paid £90 plus VAT at the local Citoren dealers to ensure I got the right part. Other online factors had the part at £80 plus VAT so there didn't seem to be many great savings to be had. I also had a look at ebay but the pictures of the fans offered seemed to differ from the removed part so I didn't buy there either despite some good prices. I was a bit anxious getting my sister to pay out over £100 just in case the fault was elsewhere.

Anyway, apart from being awkward to get at, with the fan being situated in a dark footwell under the dash, the replacement went fine. There were just the three screws to hold the fan and a little bit of cable disconecting once the carpet trim had been removed. The controls now work again and I am owed even more favours.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

I have been searching for a simple wax free shampoo but nobody seems to stock it. After having big problems with smears on my windscreen (only removed after trying numerous combinations of treatments) I found the culprit to be the car shampoo even though I was very careful to avoid the windscreen. As I polish the car regularly I do not need these wax treatments - just a plain old wax free shampoo.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Never use washing up liquid to clean your car - it contains salt...:-)

I've always used Simoniz Smear Free Car Wash Shampoo - got a big canister on Ormskirk market for just £2.99.

It has always puzzled me why people use a car wash containing (supposedly) car wax as it's the very last thing you want on the windscreen.

That is, of course, unless you drive with your head out of the window..:-))

I've got a P Reg VW Polo 1.6CL Saloon and recently when I have gone out to the car the alarm fob has not been able to disable the alarm/unlock the car. The battery has been tested and is good - tested under load to make sure. The light on the fob does still come on when I press the button though.

The first time it happend, I tried opening the door with the key - and possibly stupidly, thought that this might allow me disarm the alarm and drive away - but no - the alarm went off, immobiliser on - car not going anywhere! Stuck now with car alarm going off in res. area on a Saturday night. Disconnected battery, left it over night! Came back to it in the morning, reconnected battery, all works fine!
Same thing though happend last night - press the fob, nothing (and this was the other fob now)

One thing that was suggested was to hold the button for 20sec to allow the fob and car 'see' each other again. This worked to unlock it - but it didn't reset it straight away - and at this I could drive home so I wasn't going to play.

The question is - is this a fob problem or is it the alarm on the car that is playing up?

I'm off to France in a few weeks so I don't want to be stuck out there and not be able to get into my car!

Cheers in advance for any ideas/help.

Could be the receiver not sure where it is on yours around dash area I would have thought. Also where you had the fob checked out they have a little receiver to check your fob is ok.problem is with that if they check it out too close Ie mine was checked out about 2ft away from the unit if the battery is low it will work ok if battery is low and receiver is further away won`t get the signal

I have Ford Galaxy 1.9TDI (S reg) and the Coil light is staying on. At the same time this happened a rear light bulb failed. What action should I take? Is it safe to drive the car?

If its a garage repair can you recommend a good local diesel specialist in the North West London / Watford area. Ford want £100 just to diagnose the problem.

Leon on Derv

I'll second that - Leoness's TDI Golf had the Glow plug light on static, on running diagnostics it showed as damage to the fuel quantifier (somewhere in the fuel pump). Service manager (sound and honest bloke) told me common cause was water or contaminants in diesel. He cleared down the fault memory and problem has not re-occurred. Still buying fuel from same supplier.

Well I have been driving the new CityRover for the last few days.

My opinion of these, is they should rename them as (deleted), I have never driven a car as bad as these, the gearbox winds just like the old \'CityMetro\', the suspension bottoms on bad ruts in the road at the front and the list goes on. If you thought the Perodua\'s and the Alto\'s are bad, then you\'re wrong.

It could be the downfall of Rover after their good recovery.

It's a shame you have had to pay for an inspection yourself!

Have you made contact with the Service Manager at all over this problem?

It might be worth your while writing to the Service Manager, outlining the situation (and copying your letter to the Dealer Principal and Peugeot Customer Services) and see what response you get..
