Probably a silly question but why are most powerfull German cars electronically limited to 155mph? I noticed Jags are but cant figure out why. Read more

You may get it above 110 if you can find a long enough downhill on a motorway. In my more reckless days I remember a friend in a 4 speed fiesta (i think) screaming the engine and then shifting into neutral when the car sounded like it was about to blow - and on a steep downhill it did do more then. Come to think about it, shifting to neutral at perhaps 90mph+ sounds rather stupid.

So I would assume you could get 140mph on an ideal (steep) downhill in gear and more in neutral

Just don't tell the policeman I told you to do it!

I have a 4 year old Audi A3 1.8T that has developed a engine problem. When pulling away, or at low speed, the car will either shudder violently or stall. Even at higher speeds (eg 60 mph) you can still feel the odd vibration going through the car.

I have taken it to an Audi dealer who replaced the air mass meter. This seemed to solve the problem for a week, but then it returned.

Can anyone suggest a cause? Read more

Hyundai must have great confidence in their products, to offer them with a full 5 year warranty, - I was wondering if anybody in the B.R. has got one, and their opinions on their merits or problems. Following an article in last weeks Sunday Times on the disposable car, it is very tempting to run one of these for 5 years, without hopefully too many expenses, and then scrap it!!! Read more

The Ford warranty covers pretty much anything except wear and tear parts, although I guess this could be more widely defined outside the 1 year period, or more widely than Hyundai does at any point.

However, you have to specify that you want cover for years 2 and 3 - it's free and just a matter of ticking the box on the order form. Maybe fleets don't do it though.

The warranty outside the legal minimum also requires the car to have been serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's intervals, at a franchised dealer.

A warranty isn't the same as a mainteance package though. And, as extended warranties are usually available up to 5 years and 100k, it's quite likely that for most private users, these will effectively be unlimited mileage anyway. Maybe it's different if you're sales repping or minicabbing, but there can't be many one owner, 100k+ five year old cars out there.

Just replenished my Golf VR6 with Mobil 1 at Kwik-Fit: 5.5 litres for £34.00 (excluding filter, which I supplied). Still cheaper than DIY and, given the stubborn canister, etc., far more convenient. Read more

Have you paid that? If not, ring them up and
ask if they have an Express Fit - it\'s Peugeot\'s equivalent
of a Kwik-Fit.

No, I certainly haven\'t paid that much!

Just looked on the Peugeot website, the Bournemouth dealer does not have Express fit, but the Poole dealer does.

Excuse me if I'm being a complete idiot, but can someone explain to me whether car wax and car polish are different items, or infact the same thing?

Having read items on how to maintain your car's paintwork, I've never seen it said that you should use a polish AND a wax, so does polish contain wax, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I use Mer on my Focus twice a year, but should I be doing something extra (in addition to regular washes) to maintain it's paintwork?

Thanks in advance! Read more

I bought a 52 Xsara from my local main dealer in Feb 03 thinking I would get a more reliable car than my aging Escort, how wrong could I be! The problem is the brake lights keep fusing! It's been in to the main dealer 5 times and they still can't fix it. The last time it spent a whole week in thier workshop with the ECU being replaced, prior to this it was 3 days with various switches being replaced. The fix usually lasts about 2 weeks then guess what ? Yep the 10 amp fuse goes again, the main dealer has suggested I uprate the fuse to 15 amp to stop it blowing! I'm a bit reluctant as the fuse is blowing for some safety reason! Does anyone out there in www. have any experience of this problem with the Xsara or any other Citroen, I can't believe it's limited to little ol me. Any information would be gratefully received as the main dealer is now scratching his bald .

Regards

Colin

Are the correct wattage bulbs fitted?

Gentlemen.

Do car manufacturers engineer their cars so that say when you close a car door it closes with a sloid sounding "clunk". I say this because I sat in a new shape Toyota Corolla and Focus both of which feel as if they have less solid doors then say a VW Golf. Would this really be the case or is it all in my mind. Do manufactureres suchg as VW use a thicker sheet of steel than say Toyota?

Thanks. Read more

". . . as all passengers (esp. my daughter), slam the pink fluffy dice passenger door, they predicted that method and obliged."

Puts on tin hat, crouches low, loads mortar: I aver that all women slam all car doors all of the time. I once said this to a female passenger and she didn't demur.

Read a big discussion trail a couple of days ago on this. It seems most contributors are against the things. Here's an idea to chew on:Except outside hospitals, schools etc.why not blow your horn every time you go over a speed hump? (only between 07.00 & 23.00 to comply with current legislation, of course). Local residents would soon get the council to get rid of humps in their area ( if they did'nt come out and brick your 'screen first). Hey, its just an idea.

DVD, just to confirm. Our local plod were recently pictured with their first victim in our local paper.
Some lads have been causing all sorts of grief charging around the local park and golf course on trail bikes, churning up the greens and the cricket square, as well as frightening people out walking their dogs in the adjoining fields. Plod came along and caught them and issued a warning, came back a couple of days later and caught them again, called tow truck and away went said trail bikes for a little holiday at the local pound.
In my opinion a good sensible action, stops the problem at source and gives the perpetrators time to reconsider while they save up the pennies to get their bikes back, if they ever bother.
