Does anyone know how to check the voltage outputs of the abs sensors on an old honda Prelude? Problem: Alb warning light comes on and stays on after car has travelled a few metres, perhaps indicating sensor fault. Where exactly do I put multitest meter probes? What should meter reading be doing and would you be turning roadwheels in turn by hand with engine running? I don\'t have access to an oscilloscope. Any knowledgeable help appreciated. Cheers, Mike. Question Clio starting
thenuke

Help is needed here

Got an old shape 98 1.2 clio that has developed a funny starting problem
If you drive somewhere and come back to the car when the car is still warm the car can take a long time to start

All other times it starts first time
Checked all connections and i don't think it is the immobiliser as it starts all other times no problems.

You can stop the engine get out lock and unlock and its ok
But stop get out lock go in to a shop for 20-30mins unlock and thats the only time it takes a while to start
Anybody got any idea's would be appreciated Read more

Adam,
I've had the same problem with my wife's Clio not starting after it's been left for 20-30 minutes. However this morning, after having been parked all night it didn't start either. Another problem that also started yesterday (perhaps related) is that the petrol gauge show full after switching one. It returns to empty when turning off the ignition switch. But I now that the tanks is half full.
Any ideas/suggestions? Will a new CTS solve this?
thanks,Martin

Hello,
I'm considering buying a high mileage 2000 'W' A4 tdi 115. Car has covered 102k, one company owner with a FASH. Can anybody give me a real world expectation of how many miles this engine and auxilaries will cover if properly maintained, with a bit of thrashing now and again but generaly driven within limits. Personal accounts would be appreciated as I would be looking at long term ownership putting about 60k miles on.
cheers Ben

On my horrid little seat marbella 850cc, the leaf spring suspension at the back is quite creaky. would this cause an MOT failure? the shocks are ok and the rubber bushes look alright too. Read more

David Lacey

I can confirm aslong as the bushes and suspension components are serviceable then the car will pass the MOT even if it creaks away like an old farm trailer.

BUT, a creak does indicate something amiss, so don't expect everything to be ok....you might have just missed something.

I test drove the Mazda6 a while ago and was very impressed with the car.

Its been out over a year now and I have only ever seen 1 or 2 basic trim 1.8 cars in the supermarkets, (I want a 2.0auto) and then only once or twice.

Does anyone know why the cars are not in the supermarkets yet... is Mazda deliberately restricting supply to keep the prices high ??

New avensis and accords I have seen at discount so why no 6 ?

Contacted quite a few brokers and importers and they all said it was impossible to get hold of the car.

Anyone seen any very good deals yet ?? I'm in the London area.

mad_s: the first 3 replies seem to confirm your views, but then the next 3 (including HJ) seem to tell a different story. You said "Contacted quite a few brokers and importers and they all said it was impossible to get hold of the car." - Were any of these amongst those mentioned by the 3 positive replies?

Question Snapped Belt!!!
banger

5 series - without a doubt. You'll probably feel obliged to service a newish vectra at a main dealer that will probably cost similar to a 5 series at a specialist.

Also the vectra will be worth £1.32 in 3 years whereas the 5 series will still be worth £5k or so.

Question MOT Questions
joe

I have just learned that my Primera has failed its MOT for 2 reasons.

Firstly, one of the front tyres has a cut. They were replaced about 1 year/10k miles ago. Can anyone tell me how deep/wide a cut has to be before it is an MOT failure?

Secondly, I was told that one of the brake lines was corroded. Having asked which part needs to be ordered, I was then told that in fact it is a flexible rubber hose, and that it has become twisted and has been "rubbing" (presumably against the tyre). I do not know how it became twisted. The last time the brakes were worked on in any way was when the pads were replaced last October (by the same garage that has done the MOT). Is it possible/likely that the hose has become twisted as a result of the pad replacement. I am struggling to imagine how it could have become twisted in any other way. Any advice? Read more

Which garage Joe? The MOT garage or the garage at which the pads were fitted back along?

Just had the (formerly !) trusty R reg Xantia 2.1TD checked over prior to a month in France with the caravan, departing on the 19th.

Turns out that the heater matrix has gone, there's an as yet undiganosed fault on the engine management system and the a/c needs re-gassing. It's only done 105k, but main dealer is quoting a sum adjacent to £1k for fixing it.

So, I'm looking at getting a new C5 2.2HDi SX Estate, at almost £5k off list.

Assuming that I can get it next week I'll be able to put _some_ running-in miles on it (perhaps a thousand) prior to starting to tow with it. The 'van will be around 1100kgs laden (C5 limit @1400) and the car will be 3-up but not heavily laden, nowhere near max train weight that's for sure.

Is this a complete "no-no" ?

There are a couple of used examples in the region with 3k miles on which could be a better bet (but not necessarily any cheaper!). Depends who, and how, the 3k miles was done I suppose....

Assuming that I use the gearbox properly, not letting the engine labour or over-rev will I be doing any significant long term harm? I'll be looking to keep the car for six years. (When the kids have all finished @ Uni!)

I'll be using motorways to Dover, then auto-routes to Geneva & beyond, about a thousand miles to the Alps which the Xantia does 90% in 5th. Then we usually have about 1000 miles running around, and another thousand home. Nicely run in when I get back, or not!

Thoughts, please, gentlemen.

Cheers 'n Beers

Nigel

I've towed from as little as 500 miles from as new, but with a petrol engine, when running in I've found the oil temp tends to get slightly higher than normal, as it does when towing also. However the mileage i towed was only about 300 miles round trip, i see no problems with this.
With the miles you will be doing i would recommend that more frequent stops be made to allow the engine to cool.
Just my thoughts however.

What is it about these that causes some drivers (mainly but not exclusively of the female gender in my experience) so much trouble ?

Virtually every time I approach one, somebody at one of the junctions will dilly dally and faff about for ages holding everyone else up and then, having analysed the situation to the nth degree, suddenly just pull out at the worst possible time straight in front of a bus or something!

I witnessed an incident just like this again last night when a car several places in front of me was trying to join the A21 from a side road. Umpteen safe opportunities to do so were squandered one after the other until, just at the point when conditions for the manoeuvre were at their very worst, the silly woman just pulled out !!

The mind boggles - what is so complicated about negotiating mini-roundabouts ? Read more

Surely it's not a problem if *two* cars arrive together?

It's when three arrive at once and all give way (happens often) that there is confusion.
