On teletext today - a driver was convicted of:-
Careless driving
No Licence
No insurance
No MOT
His punishment? Fined £50! Three allegedly sane and sensible people thought that appropriate. Read more
I've only seen the bizarre 'skulls' advert, has anyone seen any details of this engine? Read more
Still a bit academic Bill, I'm afraid, but thanks for the info!
Hi everyone. I have recently acquired a 1993 Vauxhall Carlton CDX (without owners manual) and I'm embarrassed to admit I can't set the flamin' clock!
It's integral to the trip computer. Can anyone tell me how to do this? (I seem to have tried every combination of key press)
Any further information on the trip computer settings / changes would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Bob

Well done mate, when you "update" to an Omega it will be done for you!! Seriously though Carltons are good cars, I went around the clock twice with no major problems at all. If the bulb goes in that trip unit that can be fun.Come back here then for info.

An article has appeared in the Evening Standard suggesting that, if elected, the conservative party would review speed limits, in particular in residential areas speed limits could get lower say 20mph and on motorways limits could be raised to say 80/90mph.
My own view is that this is most welcome and sensible. I think we should have speed limits that are based on actual rates of road traffic accidents so particular accident hot spots have lower limits and roads that are safe have higher limits. I think the motorway limit should be raised to 80/90mph, most people travel at or around 80 mph anyway. I also think that night time speed limits sould be raised even higher (why not have electronically opoerated varibale speed limits on all motorways and A roads). I recently drove back on a empty M1 from Leeds to London and it was quite safe to drive at 80-100mph in dry weather in a modern family car. Lets not forget that speed limits were set in the days of morris minors. I beleive motoring technology has moved forward a gret deal but so has traffic volume.
The article also suggested that road side camera policy is likely to be reviewed leading to a reduction in the number of GATSO's. As we all know GATSO are just a form of stealth tax and do nothing to increase road safety.
I also beleive that the road tax disc should be abolished and replaced by a supplimental levy on fuel, I beleive this would be more efficient and equitable, so the more you drive the more you pay.
Road pricing (another stealth tax) should only be introduced after genuine improvements have been made to roads/rail infrastructure.
All road humps should be ripped up and removed, they increase pollution and do not stop postie or white van man from driving slowly! ...perhaps replaced by cameras if the accident rate warrants it...
Am I talking sense or complete rubbish.... Read more
Re the usual comment re old cars and speed limits. Clearly cars have improved since the days of the Morris Minor. However, the big snag is that drivers haven't evolved. They are also less likely to concentrate, what with radios, CD's, cell phones and other distractions. Not least, the great unwashed now drive as distinct from the former higher paid, and dare I say, better mannered, echelons of society;)
Does anyone know where to get hold of Amsoil oil in this country?
Have tried a few websites, but they do not stock very much of it, and also do not have different grades.
Also, looking to buy 5w40, or 0w40, perhaps even a 30 oil, fully synthetic, as long as it is suitable for diesels (most oils are, but you can get diesel specific also). Is the Comma brand oil ok? Have heard that it is not re-labelled brand, and that they add the additives/cleaning agents themselves.
Have used Halfords in the past, but this has gone up to about £27 5 litres, whereas the comma stuff is about £20.
Any other suggestions?. I know the amsoil is likely to be more expensive, but after reading the "motor oil bible" (www.motor-oil-bible.com/oil-bible.html), sounds like it is worth it. It has good comparatives of oils, and mobil does not rank as high as believed by some (which included me!).
Just thought it was interesting reading, just wanted to know what others think?
Cheers for any help.

Shaz,
Keep losing these posts.
Chas will have brochures on request, which will help you to select a size and location for these remote double filter systems. He will also advise on the type of oil for your engine. I took a lot of convincing on 0/30 but I am happy now.
The sample bottles come from Chas prepaid £10 These are then posted to Robinson's Labs. Wear Check in North Wales. takes 2/3 days. They then advise you on the results.
Best way to sample is using Amsoil's little brass tap which screws into the dual filter carrier.
Which brand of tyre air compressor is the best, it should have a accurate gauge, I checked out argos, and they sell the michellin brand, are they any good?
The reason is that i am fed up of paying 20p for the privilage of using the forcourts tyre compressor, it used to be free wonder if the aa lost objection to charging motorist for free air Read more
And let's face it, 20p is hardly going to break any of us! This has become a really strange thread!
Saw a car care presentation on cable TV the other day which included a live demonstration of a product designed to stop leaks in the coolant system as soon as they appear. The product was made by Wynne's and the demonstration showed someone pouring some water into a tin can full of holes then pouring a small amount of this fluid into it. What had resembled a watering can in full flow immediately stopped with not a single drip to be seen anywhere. It all looked quite remarkable to me and a very, very good idea. IIRC the guy said the fluid should simply be added to the cooling system and could be left indefinitely. It would seal any leaks immediately and remain active until the coolant was changed.
Anyone had any experience of this product and/or got any views on it ? Read more
Don't worry Sean - I haven't got a leak and wouldn't necessarily use this stuff if I did. I was just interested to know if anyone knew anything about this specific Wynne's product (Radiator Stop Leak) and it appears not. I know about Radweld, eggs etc. but this seemed light years ahead and the leaks it fixed were by no means pin holes either. I guess I'd be happy to use it if it was a choice between that and getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere - not a case of bodging.
My Peugeot 406 developed a radiator leak on 29 May, the following day was taken off the road by the dealership which sold it to me 9 months previously and I was told radiator had a fault and will be relpaced asap under the warranty. Ever since then the car has been in the garage and although I was provided with courtesy car immediately my daily work suffers since the first courtesy car was much smaller. That was replaced last week but but I am still finnishing my work later than usual due to constant pulling over to use mobile phone (my car has hands free kit).
I would like to know if other Peugeot owners are having similar problems? I do not believe that Peugeot are allowed to sell new cars without being able to provide spare parts. How long should I accept this situation? Read more
HI,
I wrote earlier about trouble getting my 406 fixed. I finally got the car back after 5 weeks. Once I requested compensation Manufacturer has agreed to extend the warrantly for a month. Dealer refuses any compensation apart from sorry we did all we could. I think I am due at least a reduction in cost for next service if nor more. What do you think?
Thanks a lot.
Nenad
You don't quote the rest of it " the fact that he is a magistrate has no bearing on the outcome of this case".
No, really though, it's unfair to comment on an individual case.
Pedestrian sees man having heart attack, takes over the wheel and drives on emergency to hospital, booked by police etc...
Unlikely?
Want to bet?
What about ambulance driver, delivering transplant organ in emergency vehicle, displaying blue lights, booked by police for speeding?
You couldn't make it up, could you?
The magistrates may know more than we do about this case.
