I was driving along today, went round a corner and my car lost power. The person behind flashed me and got out of his car to tell me that fuel was pouring from the underside of my car. I can't see where it's coming from and it only comes out when the engine is on.

The car is a 1998 Clio 1149cc (Not the newest shape). Can anyone tell me if there is a quick way to fix this or at least identify where it's coming from. There is no visible rust or any holes in the area where the fuel is coming from, could it be a loose connection somewhere?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Seen this a couple of times not just on Clios but Megane as well. Since Renault reinvented the fuel hose retainer it seems that if the ends are not pushed totally into place they can pop off. Answer is to make sure the hoses are really pushed home tight when changing the filter.

On the news today TfL said that traffic jams were down by 40% (nice to know that they can quantify it so easily).

Well for starters, the roadworks at Vauxhall Cross have been completed and the decline in jams here is nearer 100% and a large area of the SW CC zone is no longer affected. Don't really know how many roadworks have been completed in other parts of the CC zone to allow for smoother running, but I am a cynic and suspect that quite a few have.

Also the average speed has improved from 8mph to 11mph. IMO this would be even higher if councils stopped putting in stupid pedestrian traffic lights rather than zebra crossings. Wandswoth council (I know outside the CC zone) have come up with a brilliant plan to put raised pedestrian crossings (controlled by lights) on one of the main roads in SW London (Lavender Hill) Read more

Two things to remember:

1. We were told by Ken that it would be more than a year before it could be stated whether or not the charge had been a success. (However, no mention was made as to how the "success" was to be judged.)

2. Stephen Norris said that he would scrap the charge if he came to power. (Fat chance I feel, but nobody must let him forget he said it!)

Hi I have an intermittent fault on my Mk1 96 Mondeo and it's driving me nuts... hope someone can help.

Everything was fine until one day the alarm kept going off after I had locked the car. The fault was traced to a sensor in the driver's door lock which the mechanic replaced. However ever since then I've had this other problem with unlocking. The mechanic has taken the lock apart twice since to try and find the fault, but despite his best efforts, the problem persists. If someone can tell me where the problem might lie, I can pass this information on to the mechanic.

Locking works fine - and I always double-lock it. The problem is with unlocking. Occasionally (20% of the time) when unlocking, the central locking opens and closes all the door locks and repeats this several times - you can see the door handles on the inside moving in and out repeatedly - EXCEPT for the drivers door handle which doesn't move.

The only way I can get into the car is to go round to the passenger's door and repeatedly try the handle until the lock (still cycling repeatedly) gets to the 'open' phase. Then from inside the car, I reach over and first push in the driver's door handle and then pull it to open the driver's door.

If anyone has any ideas, I would be most grateful! Read more

Hi

Hope someone can help.

I have a MK1 96 Mondeo. I have the red master key, a remote key and a 'normal' chipped key (with the red insert). Recently, the normal 'chipped' key has started setting off the alarm when it is used to open the car door. The remote key continues to work correctly either in the door lock or via remote IR operation.

I'm guessing that the 'chipped' key needs reprogramming or something similar. I've seen this article:
www.fordmondeo.org/mods_keyfob.htm
Does anyone know if this only works for the remote keys, or can this be used to reprogramme a normal 'chipped' key.

Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

Pretty much what I suspected. It isn't a key problem as the chips are not a factor when using the keys to open the door locks - almost certainly that door passenger lock is faulty. I doubt it's making the correct contact to disable the alarm when turned by the key, although the door lock motor is providing sufficient movement. Unless you can do some very careful adjustment it sound horribly like a new central locking unit needed.

The link below relates to a article in the latest Fleet News.
Now I'm not a biker, so all you bikers out there take a look at this. Is this realy the right bike to use on a safe biking campaign ?? As I say I have a very limited knowledge of the biking world, but I would have thought that the safe riding type of message was mainly aimed at the sports bike riders, wouldn't they have been better putting this officer onto a modern sport bike ??

Hi guys,

I am changing the engine gearbox in my friends H reg 1.4 energy Renault 19.

Now this fine (ahem) car has the carb version of the 1.4 energy engine in it - and my mate in his infinite wisdom has gone and got an engine and gearbox out of a 70k M reg \'19. As this version of the energy engine has the single-point injection module on the top inplace of the carb, I have a cunning feeling when I go to connect everything back up its not going to work....

I havent even started yet for this reason - but does anyone have any clues as to how different the wireing is for the injection unit?? I still dont know if he took the ECU and associated bits out of the other car so it may be a non-starter anyway. Im also slightly worried that the M reg car had a cat and therefore a whole host of associated sensors talking to the ECU :S

Also, I guess the injection version of the engine is not much different so could I get away with simply un-bolding the sack of pink fluffy dice off the top and putting the carb (which is still good) from his old engine onto it ?

Cheers,

I have a 1995 Audi Avant 1.9 TDi, 142,000 miles on the clock (not an automatic), serviced by a main dealer and cared for on the dot. I do a lot of mileage, much of it on motorways. In the last few months, usually when travelling up a long motorway incline, on occasion the car will accelerate up to around 70 mph, but it will not go faster. If I continue to press the pedal, I do not go faster or slower. If I back off, the throttle responds normally. At the next incline, more often than not, there is no problem, and she will accelerate smoothly. I can go weeks with no problem. Yesterday, however, up and down the M62, I had the problem several times each way.
The dealer advises there are 3 possibilities. I am interested in what people in the Forum think. Has anyone experienced this with any car? What do you think is happening? Read more

Bosch specialists have fixed the problem - it appears, Ran a diagnostic check, got values, checked with me fault intermittent, found a hole in a pipe or hose (a 12" long, thin flexible thing) conducting air in some way into engine, I think they said, which was a fault that would have caused the problem. No certainty problem cured, but good bet. Car now wholly different - accelerates in way not accelerated before - noticebaly smoother and more powerful. £60. I am delighted.

Hi All

I have a Mk 2 VW Golf 1300 81,000 miles.

The spark plug (HT) Leads are the original set.

Is there a set time to replace spark plug (HT) Leads?

Do new leads increase engine efficiency?

The engine sounds fine, i.e. the ignition timing is alright.

Thanks

A friend of mine bought a Peugeot 405 turbo diesel from a small car dealer almost 3 months ago. Having owned one before, he knew what performance to expect and had an independent investigation into what he thought was an underactive turbo. The turbo was fine but before any more work was done to find the cause of the sluggish performance, the engine broke a con-rod. With 2 weeks guarantee remaining, the dealer reluctantly agreed to put things right.

He fitted an engine which he claims came with a guarantee and has done less than 100K miles. Despite my friend’s persistence he refuses to put anything in writing about the engine change or give any warranty for the work done. The car will be ready for collection tomorrow with 6 days warranty remaining.

The RAC legal team told my friend the dealer is acting within his rights.

Can anyone offer some advice?

The latest is this:

The garage have replaced the engine, it sound OK and runs OK, but the car won't go past 85mph. Although the rev counter has an indicated red line of 5,000rpm, the engine governor is set to 4,500rpm. I don't know enough to be sure, but I'm wondering if there is a van-version of this engine, with a different cam and lower red line?
