Hi All,
can anyone tell me where i can find the vehicle speed sensor on a 2ltr Omega please?
I have an ecu error reporting no signal from vehicle speed sensor but i'm not sure weather the sensor is on the gearbox or on the speedo itself.
Symptoms are inoperative speedo and no Inst/Cons readout on the computer display.
Thanks

So my old car is dead and the mechanic has shown an interest in taking my car off my hands complete with cracked cylinder head for a nominal fee which adding in the cost of the repair leaves me quits if I'd part-ex'd it instead.
So I went off to the biggest Rover dealer in the area. I thought end of the month, quota to meet and they might be on for a deal. They had over a dozen 75's and three I liked, there was a nice Arden Green 75 2.0 Diesel on a 99V with under 40,000 miles with leather and climate control at 11,995. A nice car, it was though easily £1500 over A1 book. I told him I had a big deposit wanted about 50% of the price as Rover finance, had no part-ex and all the documents to sign up that day and leave a deposit.
Would he haggle? No. He wasn't interested in my offer which was definitely nearer retail at £1000 less than sticker and didn't even want to counter-offer. Yet this garage offers £5000 off a MG ZT without batting an eyelid. He didn't want to show me round the cars. He sat in his chair, went through the list he had and gave me his card. He'll 'be in touch' and call in a few days as he was expecting more stock. I felt very peeved and left.
Could someone let me in on what on earth he was playing at? Is this some kind of salesman craft I'm unaware of? There is another dealer nearby but they have a much smaller stock but at least I know they are more enthusiastic about selling cars. Read more
This is essentially the point. If you are in a fully competitive market then those who offer bad service go to the wall. If you have a monopoly you can do what you like.
I've got a '92 escort RS2000,(121k miles) and I have had trouble engaging gears. The worse gears were first, second and reverse.
After spending far too much time with it like that I had the clutch changed. Cost £250!
When the car is hot the gears seem almost perfect yet first thing when the car is used the gears are still notchy and difficault to engage. Back to the garage for a refund? :)
Also when I 'boot' it in first and change into second it will still sometimes crunch gears. Why would that occur?
Many thanks all.

Yup I've had the gearbox oil changed before the clutch by vospers which made a huge difference to a then very difficault gear change.
Does seem to be for the first few mins when the car is cold. As soon as I've done a mile things loosen up and its sorted.
Would be nice to just sort this issue tho.
I've taken delivery of a new Skoda Fabia (I'm developing a thick skin for the inevitable jokes) and the initial impression of myself and others is that it's far better than a car so cheap has any right to be.
As this is my first car, I'd be interested in views on a few points:
(1) the car is to be parked on the street. Should I get one of those massive steering wheel locks? The car has an immobiliser, which causes an LED on the driver's door to flash, but it's not much of a visual deterrent.
(2) the vibrations from the (1.4 petrol) engine seem a little uneven when I'm sitting waiting to move off with my foot fully on the clutch. Should this be a cause for concern? I learned to drive in a variety of diesels so I'm not really used to the sounds or feel of a petrol car. I hardly notice any engine noise (or vibrations) at all when the car is moving.
(3) I hesitate to ask a catch all question, but can anyone think of any other general advice for a mature but inexperienced and relatively clueless driver with a new car? Read more
"I seem to remember that garage tyre pressure gauges are supposed to be inaccurate but are the pocket ones you can buy any better?"
Yup. Buy the "key-ring" digital one from Halfords.
Brilliant idea - stops you losing it.
I have recently been quoted £750 to repair the air con on my BMW 523 se auto. The refrigerant gas has leaked out from the expansion valve which is aparently situted behind the dashboard. This seems rather expensive !! Has anyone any experience of this and does it seem reasonable or should I get a second opinion from an indepenant specialist?
Thanks in anticipation

many thanks for the advice and comments. I will have it carefully checked out before going ahead.

Recently we've had a number of actual (including my own !) and possible/potential head gasket failures in the back room.
Is this coincidece, or is there a reason/time of year etc why we've seen these now ?

With the Astra I'd just made use of the newly fitted towbar to haul logs in a trailer for several runs, presumably the hardest work the car had ever done, but the leak didn't show up until a few days later.
I suspect (as the car had very little history when I bought it) that it might have been starting to go six months ago, but given the circumstances of the sale I'm maybe naively thinking it's conicnidence.
I'm sure there's a jinx on the Backroom as my injector return pipes also went just after reading HF's account previously. I'm staying clear of any thread with the subject "Catastrophic Engine Failure"....

I wouldn't place too much importance on aircon - plenty of fresh air with the top down ;-) Also, it's a pretty rare feature in a UK market car. It is probably more useful for keeping the interior windows clear in the winter, but the 5's heater is excellent and the vents cope with the demisting well.

We also have Caltex Vortex which is similarly supposed to work benefits. I guess I can't get over a lifelong scepticism when it comes to marketeers.....Glad y'all enjoyed the local writing style. I'll find some more from time to time,
Picked up a new Honda CRV yesterday and did about 60 miles.
Went out this morning and the rear driver side tyre is flat. On closer inspection there is a screw in it. We called on friends last night who are having an extension to the front of their house (nearly finished) so I suspect it was picked up there.
Can the tyre be repaired, or is that it ? If so, what cost a new one (Bridgestone tyre CRV is 15" wheeled Sport model) ?
Can't believe our bad luck... Read more
Get it hot vulcanised repaired,
Too late - he's already had it repaired. See post above yours!
Does anyone know what colour the branded Fiat coolant is - I think its called Paraflu!
The reason I ask is that I asked the local Fiat dealer to change the coolant on my wifes Punto last year and on checking it today using a hydrometer it appears to have the colour of pale urine and a specific gravity of just over 1. It makes me think the franchise might have been taking the pink fluffy dice. Read more
My 3 month old Alfa has Paraflu and it is a blue liquid. My girlfriend has an MGF and the coolant in that is orange/yellow, maybe they`ve put another brand in?
Hi,
thanks to all who submitted postings to my query! very much appreciated and useful also, especially the ABS stuff! Just for the record, the speed sensor is located on the near side of the gearbox (large diameter bolt body), i took it off and tested it with a ohm meter, no reading... gave it a bash on the worktop, reading... fixed and sorted! The ABS ECU was faulty, a used one from the scrappy (£95 inc VAT) sorted this although it is a fiddly job and make sure all the system is fully bled afterwards, starting with the nearside front and working round clock wise. If aquiring a used one from a breakers try to cut the existing break pipes leaving the unions in tact and a length of pipe protruding, once out flatten the ends of the left over pipes as this will save you some bleeding later as it will help keep most of the fluid in the unit and not ingress air into the system, although its recommended that you give the system a good flush through with new fluid during final bleeding. The other faults registering were Air Mass sensor and Air temp sensor, both in fault according to the ECU, i changed these as a matter of course so not sure if the errors were relating to the speed sensor or just coincidence. All i need to sort now are worn wishbone bushes so if anyone has any handy tips on this job i would be please to hear them as it looks like turning out to be a complete mission... thanks again, Simon :)
