Stopped in the street today by a researcher, normally I walk on but today, no. Turned out they were researching \"cars for professionals with families\".
First question was \"can I recall seeing a large family car advertised recently\". Well I couldn\'t, the only one that came to mind was the XTrail, an ad which stands out for me as I have to switch channel immediately, so much do I hate the music and the way it mixes sound levels to keep grabbing your attention (product proposition deficit maybe?)
The oddest thing was the collection of cars I was asked about
Passat
Avensis
Vectra
A4
Mondeo
and, wait for it, wait for it...Mini!?
How many Minis are sold to people also looking at an Avensis. Oh. hold on, I recently thought seriously about a Cooper and actually bought a 7 yr old A6 estate. Is it me or the marketing departments which are mixed up? Read more
My friends' father traded in his 3 year old 520i Touring for a MINI Cooper as well, basically doing a straight swap with the dealer.
And a classic Mini loving friend is seriously interested in one of the new ones as well, although he risks excommunication from the Mini fanatic religion if he does buy one.
I have just purchased an Astra 1.6 Club (52). It has a VDO CDR500 fitted which works fine. However when I turn it on it says PROGRAM in the display for a short while before the radio is heard. I have looked in the manual and it only mentions the display showing CODE.
Does any one else have this radio/cd unit and should it display PROGRAM or CODE? Read more
John S, I don't think Fluff will hear you - old post.
In reply to Dan17, if you goto the vauxhall website (www.vauxhall.co.uk) look in the top RH corner and sign up to "My Vauxhall". You'll be able to then view stereo manuals in PDF format. These manuals will be newer than your stereo, but a lot of the features and instructions will be similar.
I have a 99 Vectra and I'm wondering what I should expect of the Aircon.
If I set the airflow to recirculate and the aircon to max cool what sort of temperature difference should I expect between a thermometer in the middle of the car and one in the aircon output?
Thanks in anticipation of an educated response. Read more
Thanks Dave
If you drive over speed bumps on a 30 mph limit road at 30 mph, are they meant to slow you down and why? If they damage your car while you traverse them at the posted speed limit do you have a claim against anybody? Are there any construction regulations re dimensions and gradient which are legally applicable to road humps? Thanks in advance! Read more
I thought so.
Basically Sheffield had a large Yorkshire Electricity depot on the main carridgeway into the town centre from the M1, IKEA wanted to knock down the multistorey car park and buildings and start again. But I believe the town centre businesses complained and permission was blocked. So instead all that business goes to Bradford or Nottingham. A well planned way to re-generate the city.
Oh and another thing, because the town centre isn't quite dead yet, a dual carridgeway (last one in the centre) that carries traffic to what car parks are available is now being turned into a single carridgeway. Ideal to have lots of queuing traffic, good for the environment I suppose.

As Above.
I was travelling down the motorway today, with the intention of looking at a possible new motor. I was sat at 80, thinking that despite the interior rattles, my Passat wasn't so bad after all. It was quiet and pretty comfertable. To my horror I realised I was also listening to Radio 2. I had become prematurely old (I'm 34).
On arrival at the dealer displaying new car (120 miles away), I quickly signed on the line and drove away in an MG ZT, listening to Eminem on Radio 1. I have become a boy racer (alright, a mature boy racer with two child seats) and I love it.
I'm off to buy a baseball cap to wear back to front.

Yes I do love the car. Everybody at work loves it. In fact one of the boys is extremely hacked off because he\'s picking up his new Toyota Celicia tomorrow. Comment \"Just my luck, three days before I pick up my new car, somebody turns up in a better one.\"
The car\'s silver and I think it looks great.(Goes pretty well too, although I\'ve never been over 70 (cough!!!!)).
I even caught my wife, who is totally indifferent to cars, looking in a shop window as we drove past.(No, it wasn\'t Dorothy Perkins).
I must confess that the radio\'s back on radio 2, (afternoons only) and the U2/INXS/Billy Idol CDs are in the changer. My four year old lad thinks it\'s a racing car, my three month old has approvingly puked over the alcantara interior. Can\'t be bad after all.
Still Smiling

I am considering buying a freelander around about 3 years old. Can anyone offer me any advise as to whether to buy a petrol or diesel model, and any other advise would be appreciated. Thank you in advanced Gary. Read more
Well, I got my Freelander NEW in Jan 2003 and since then - 6 months - have had two new clutches - TERRIBLE. I am now telling the dealer - on the 3rd clutch problem - that they can take the car back and give me back my money.
I've just spent all afternonn trying to find an answer to a simple technical question. I know it's out there somewhere, but I can't find it.
All I need is a simple table that tells me what range of tyre widths are sutiable for what width of rim.
I can't believe the diameter makes any difference, but for say a 6.5" rim there must be a recommended range of tyre width.
I don't suppose a 225 tyre will happily fit on a 4.5j rim, and wouldn't expect that a 155 tyre will go onto a 8" rim.
There must be a table somewhere. Anyone know please???
I've tried the 'bible' websites but my browser just gives up.
Many thanks.

Most of the major tyre manufacturers will send you a copy of their publications detailing tyre dimensions if you ask them nicely - a gripping read if ever there was one (pun unfortunately intended!). These list the range of acceptable rim widths for each tyre size. There's usually one rim width which is used for determining the other tyre dimensions - section width, static loaded radius, rolling circumference etc.
Before you start questioning my reading tastes (!), I had to go through this ordeal to find a suitable replacement for some metric Michelin TRX tyres......!
as there is no obvious access to the top of the radiator in my 1994 mondeo without sgnificant dismantling am I corrrect in thinking i can pour radweld directly into the expansion tank? if i do , do I then just run the engine for a few minutes?
cheers Read more
short term fix though....
Depends what your definition of a short term fix is?
Astra's radiator and it was still leak tight when I sold it 3 yrs after adding Radweld - even after another coolant change and no more radweld added. Next owner never mentioned the rad ever springing a leak.
Radweld also fixed a leaking coreplug on my mk2 Cavalier and still no leaks 2 yrs later - again coolant changed with no further Radweld added.

Don't jest Terry B. We already have districts where you can only drive between certain hours based on your number plate... a sure fire money-making scheme for traffic enforcers.
A "barangay" is like a parish. It has an elected Captain in charge and a committee and employs its own low-level (in every way) quasi police force to keep the peace. A watchman could be anyone given a vest with a fancy badge on with vague powers .. Sometimes a gun as well. The more senior ones even get bullets to put in them, which they usually fire off when drunk in some karaoke bar.
Has its roots in the days of tribes. Philippine culture still very tribal-oriented.
I can't resist one another, which I know is not UK-specific but it comes from The Growlette Files. Metro Manila has a vast problem with thousands of ancient smoke-belching buses which race each other for passengers, stop anywhere they think they will to unload or load (I mean fast lane etc), many of which are unlicensed and unroadworthy and have absolutely no regard for other road-users.
Recent purge against this hailed in media. Roadside emission tests, roadworthiness checks etc. Result, authorities impounded or issued ban notices to some 2,000 buses in the course of a week.
Now big problem. Thousands of commuters are complaining there aren't enough buses and they have to wait for a ride (and this isn't even the rainy season yet)and are late for work. Trade unions up in arms, demos outside Mayor's office, all that.
Not only that, many of the illegal bus lines are owned by senior police officers, govt officials etc, so they're getting out of shape about their loss of undeclared income and so on and so on.
Coming up to elections, so Mayor thinking if I don't fix this all these guys won't vote for me again....worse I might end up in concrete boots in the Pasig River.....
Solution: let the illegals back after "inspections" and "approvals" and "fees" to save face and create the illusion of progress.
Mess with the status quo in the Philippines at your peril...
This country is a hoot.
