guys, forget the honda advert, i think i just saw the best car add ever. Its the ad for the VW V10 deisel engine where pictures of animal skulls appear with sound of the animal, and the last one is the picture of the V10 engine and the sound of the engine starting up. WOW, the sound is to die for, wish i had that engine in my AX...... Read more
Just a quick question. Have recently bought a 1998 Peugeot 306 1.6 Meridian and was wondering if anyone knew if it had ABS fitted as standard.
Have tried looking for a site with a full spec but can't find one...can anyone help?
Cheers,
P.S. I did try an emergency brake and the car did brake without any squeal so thought it did have ABS...but the discs/pads were changed recently so not necessarily true. Read more
Guys - thanks for the messages. I didn't see an ABS light come on (like that of the airbag when switching on) so thought it not to have it but wouldn't be surprised if Peugeot hadn't put the light in.
I think the new discs/pads have been fitted for a while and have bedded in OK. When I did brake hard, the car didn't feel like it was cadence braking and I couldn't hear anything to this effect either but I couldn't get it to skid...!
Anyway, I'll check it out at the weekend and will confirm by looking for the ABS unit under the bonnet. Thanks for your help.
Is there a website which details the full spec for the car? Have searched Google and looked through Parkers but doesn't give that much info!
The only other small thing I've noticed is that whenever I turn the ignition on (i.e. engine off) the fan is spinning at a very slow speed and at no point can I switch it off...is this normal? (It's only the fan and A/C is off).
Cheers,
Is it me or is the great man a rare visitor these days?
The roadtests seem fewer and postings sparse.
Are you losing faith in us, or is it simply that you need to earn a crust and the site only eats your time and money! ;-)

"We're a long time dead after all!"
I quite agree, VM. No-one ever said on their death-bed that they wished they had spent more time at the office...
Following on from Illegal Drivers.
Some friends of mine have a next-door neighbour who, quite frankly, shouldn't be on the road.
She is a pensioner aged almost 80 who her late husband would not allow to drive when he was alive. Now that he is dead, she drives but is a total menace.
In the last two weeks she has:
(1) Smashed into my friend's gate / gatepost, damaging them and her own Fiesta
(2) Scratched, indeed, impaled her Fiesta on her own fence by driving too close to it in an attempt to park on her own, ample, driveway.
She has an M reg Fiesta, 1.1 petrol, but she makes it sound like a diesel cum vaccuum cleaner cum tank as she never seems to go beyond second gear!
She really is a danger and should really be stopped by reporting her to the DVLA. She just should not be on the road full stop.
I will leave the decision to my friends, but they are non-internet users who would like some advice on what to do about this. From what I have seen of her so-called driving abilities, she will end up killing someone sooner rather than later, let alone damage other vehicles (two such incidents in the last 6 months, God only knows how much she pays for insurance!).
If a letter were sent to the DVLA giving her name and address, would they actually look into this or what?
Thanks,

Forgive me if I've missed this elsewhere in the thread, but do your friends know any of her relatives/good friends?
If I knew the lady well enough I'd certainly take it up with her, but at the same time I'd try to have a quiet word with a relative so that they know just how dangerous things have become.
A dangerous situation and a sensitive subject. But with someone so old and vulnerable I don't think you should simply take action without considering the impact of a sudden and unexepcted withdrawal of an important means of mobility and communication.
It could save her from a dangerous situation but unless it is properly handled it could also expose her to a humiliation and loss of self-respect that is very difficult to deal with at that age.

BUMP! (I see the Filipino bandit is here ...)
any thoughts on the new craze for underbody neon lighting?personally i dont like them but they seem to be popular with all the young guys, also from a legal point of view whats the story? Read more
Varying colours, blue to green to yellow to red back to blue and so on.
Plus bright flashing blue leds hidden in the door mirror surround.
All well illegal.
Mind you considering the state of the driver and "friend" in the Rover ZR whereupon I saw these in Kidderminster Saturday beginning to wonder how much truth there is in the rumour started by Jeds.
That is the one that these are gay signals.
Hi, hope someone can help.
I\'ve got a GOLF 2000 GT TDI (115).
A few days ago i noticed on my dashboard telling me to check the collant level, which i did. I\'ve topped up the coolant level, but i\'m still getting a flashing light with the same message. The temperature gauge is in the middle, where it should be.
Any ideas what can be causing this?
Cheers

Just thought i'd update the guys who offered a few suggestions previously. The problem was air in the system and a leaking radiator. All working well now.
Thanks for the advice.
How much will it cost to reseat the valves on a 1.7TD Astra 1993.
Also, how much would it cost to replace the glow plugs, and is it a job easy to DIY? If so how.
Would this help my car start first time? Read more
Do you mean re-seating or re-setting the valve clearences (re-shimmimg)?
If it's re-shimming an Isuzu engine then our local Vauxhall dealer wants £60+VAT per hour plus parts. My brothers Astra TD (Isuzu) goes in today to a local diesel specialist, I think it was £60 all in he was quoted.

Mother-in-law has 02 reg Space Wagon, bought ex-demo from main agent in January, about 6,000 miles on the clock. Braking from speed now produces noticeable vibration. I drove it last weekend: she doesn't normally drive in a manner to notice this, I got it to do it twice. Yesterday she was on a longer drive and had to decelarate quickly, and noticed it. I thought warped discs (why?) She's taking it to local main agent. Any other ideas about what might cause it? Is it likely to be covered by the warranty? (website says discs/pads excluded) Car by car breakdown refers to brake recall (as dealer demo, presumably work completed) but to reduced brake efficency. Still stops, but vibrates. Read more
Original problem now sorted (and under warranty) however, I thought people might be intrigued to learn that the garage told mother-in-law that the brakes had been 'relined' !?
I thought that only happened to shoes on drum brakes and that the space wagon is discs all round...
Two questions:
1. Is there any benefit in changing spark plugs more often than the manufacturers recommendation ? Toyota recommends 40K for my Toyota - but since I do 35K per annum, I have to change them yearly !
2. Anyone know any good independent Toyota garages in Cambridgeshire, as Toyota want £55 to change the plugs - is that expensive ? Read more
In the Carina E, platinum-plated plugs lasted a quoted 60,000 miles so you might get away with once every two years ...

When I was in Stuttgart in December touring the M.B. Plant they were running a VW V10 Phaeton on test and believe me it didn't sound like the advert.
Sounded nice for a diesel though.
And I think the Honda advert is sheer class.
