Does anyone know how to get the instrument panel out of a 1994 Renault 21 Savannah?
I need to replace some of the warning lights & can't remove the instrument panel shroud. I've got to the bit where Mr. Haynes says to remove the 4 screws and ease the shroud out. It won't ease out and seems to be rigidly fixed into the fascia at the bottom. I've undone everything and am stumped. Anyone know? Any enthusiasts web-sites where one could find obscure data like this?

Ther is something thats not right about the design of the rear of the new RR, same thing affects the nem MINI, could they be designed by the same guy at BMW?, discos CRVs Xtrails all look in proportion , but the RR is just wrong. The early RR mk2 had the look of a black cab but it seemed to get sorted later in life. Any idea whats amiss or am I the only one thats finds it awkward? Read more
Evening all,
I checked my discs and pads today, and thought they could probably do with replacing, as it's an automatic, and is heavy on pads anyway.
So I rang the local Saab garage for a quote and they said £250.00 incl fitting.
I then looked on Eurocarparts.co.uk, and found the Saab OE parts for £127.00 incl vat and delivery.
Is it really a £125.00 job to change the discs and pads, or are they trying it on?

I've got some threadlock, but no idea what red grease is!
Just blown the head gasket on my Rover 827 Coupe, everyone is talking telephone numbers for repair charges. Is this really the case ? - Read more
Yep, it's dead...
A HG change on one of these (reliable 2.7 litre) Honda lumps is a big job - there isn't much more I can say.

Hi all,
Couldn't travel to the other side of the globe and not post a message (keeping the international aspect of HJ's forum alive!)
Couple of things I've noticed about the cars here : Everyone drives Japanese stuff, it all looks the same, and the ones I've driven all drive the same too. I've not really ever been a fan of Japanese cars, but they get the job done surprising well and don't tax you when driving 100s of Kms. OK, they don't handle anywhere near as well, and some of the roads here are begging for our MINI but we quite like them. Might have a look again when we replace the Clio. I think the main problem we have with them at home is the image, not the product.
And....
All the boy racers in New Zealand have a toy that I've not seen at home. Not the side skirts or the underfloor lighting or massive ICE but a little whistle thing. I think it's something to do (or to mimic) a turbo, but it makes a whoosh noise whenever they change gear. Maybe the next big thing at a B&Q carpark near you?!

Yes, Baf, forgot that, up in the New Territories. I was thinking of the Island, and then of course big hairy hot Japs (cars) would have good pose value up Lan Kwai Fong on a Saturday night.

Hi all, I own a 1993 mondeo 1.6 and i have started to notice a fair bit of blue smoke from the exhaust under acceleration (usually hard acceleration!). It is also noticable under normal driving conditions at night when I can see the smoke through the headlights of cars behind me. I have been told this is due to the oil valve stems...?. Anybody have any ideas what else it could be, or if it is the stem seals. The engine seems to run fine. Any estimates on prices to get it sorted would be helpful........(not too expensive hopefully!)
Thanks Ste. Read more
That doesn't seem that high for a modern engine - i wouldn't expect the piston rings to be worn enough to cause the smoking if the engine oil has been changed regularly but the 1.6 does get worked pretty hard in the mondeo....
After a rethink - I'd previously thought an estate would meet the family needs, I'm now looking at the x-trail (diesel seems to be best) and crv (no diesel available) and would appreciate comments, owners experiences or any good/bad news.
many thanks

KB,
The gearbox is already getting easier - must be just the newness as you say.
The interior I have is the 'Sport' level with the sort of egg-box (!?) pattern on the seats that is washable. The only other option was to go for leather, but I didn't want this.
The deal I got was quite good (so the dealer tells me, and I am happy with it) but you are right, there is nothing offered on the diesel. I posted separately on this but briefly, my local dealer offered zero discount, then a few days later I popped into another dealer in a town 30 miles away as I was passing at the time. Sat down, said what I wanted and basically got the equivalent to a £1500 discount ....... now if the local dealer had realised I was serious he would have got my business, but sense this reaction by dealers to enquiries is not unusual.
The weekend has just been made even more perfect by England's rugby team......

Anybody know anything about the quote below, found when looking to compare UK and US Nissans.....at www.nissan.com/
"In compliance with a ruling issued by the United States District Court

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. v. Nissan Computer Corporation,
this web site has been converted to non-commercial use.

A quick google at 'Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. v. Nissan Computer Corporation' will give you the relevant info.
Basically, NMC don't own the nissan.com and nissan.net domain names, these are owned by the computer company. There was nothing NMC could do about it until the computer company started running banner ads on the site, some of which involved cars. As NMC own the trademark 'Nissan' relating to automobiles, they were able to sue and get the site taken down.
One of the shopping channels has lately been advertising a portable steam cleaner called the "Steam Buggy". It's use is primeraly round the kitchen, but it was shown being used to clean car wheels. I have been wondering about it's use on the bike, which has many hard to get at nooks and crannies ideal for accumulating road muck. I was wondering as to the wisdom of this, is it likely to remove paint and lacquer with regular use?
Anyone have any experience of these, or of any negative effects of regular steam cleaning? Read more
If gunk is a degreaser and steam is a degreaser, then we should all avoid gunk as well. I'd have thought that a bit of skilled steaming wouldn't cause any problems, but blasting the poor bike with a 1500 psi blast might give problems :-)
Sorry for my ignorance - esp if this question has been posted before.
Why do diesel engines have higher torque figures than equivalent size petrol engines ?
Steve Read more
>Differences in combustion properties of the fuel types
Put crudely, diesel engine combustion happens at constant pressure (throughout the stroke) and petrol engine combustion happens at constant volume (at the top of the stroke). Obviously the faster the stroke the less true (and less effective) this is, which is why diesel engines don't rev as quickly as petrol engines and why slow revving marine diesels are closer to diesel qua diesel than a free-revving modern common rail automotive unit.
>Differences in compression ratios
Diesel engines operate at much higher compressions, hence:
>differences in gearing
They require lower revs to produce max power and torque and can handle much higher gearing.
>differences in turbocharging properties / forced induction
Turbocharging operates the same way: it forces more air in.
Is that ok?

"..the new one.." that should be. D'oh!
