Wonder if anyone on this site has advice or knowledge of the following
I have an 18 yr old daughter who is learning to drive.
would like to purchase a new car, one with a low insurance group such as vw polo or toyota yaris. Not sure whether to insure the car in my name, then include my daughter as a named driver, I have full no claims bonus on my own vehicle which I will be keeping.
or to insure the new car in my daughters name only.
I assumed that if I did the former it would be cheaper,
however I have been told that insuers have cottoned on to the fact that parents insure cars on behalf of their offspring, and that the cost we be similar whichever way I do it.
any comments or if anyone knows of a decent insurer for young persons would be much appriciated

Even though the OP was written in 2003 this still stands.

So you fibbed to the insurance company. Didn't pay anywhere near the proper premium for the risk. Had expensive claims. And then write online admitting this. Let's be plain here Owen that is what we in the Insurance business term ....fraud. Which is in fact a criminal offence....

Question MOT failure?
volvoman

My Volvo 940 has a slightly damaged front nearside indicator - the orange plastic has a couple of approx. 1cm square chunks missing from the side of it due to a minor impact. The indicator still works fine so is this an MOT issue ? If so, other than buying a brand new one from a Volvo dealer, where might I be able to find a replacement in the Bromley/Orpington area ?

As always, any help gratefully received. Read more

I believe that repairs are acceptable provided they are reasonably permanent - eg decent adhesive as opposed to just sticking tape over it. In terms of lights, the repair must not significantly afect the beam pattern of a headlight for example. A bit of a grey area on the test, but I'd have thought tape would not have passed.

No, the tester wouldn't have noticed your car had no reversing lights, and even if he did he'd have ignored it. They are not part of the MOT.

Had a flat battery last night which isn't unusual for a second hand car which has been sitting on a forecourt up until last weekend (and has sat unmoved during the last very cold week).

On the basis that it starts again after the short run I gave it after a jump, what distance do I need to travel for it to be fully charged. If it's relevant it is a BMW 318ti. I always thought it was about 30 miles?

Thanks in advance. Read more

Can anyone help, I have a 1997 Rover 216SLI which refuses to start after rain. When dry the car will start on the button. Any common things to look out for on this model, leads etc ?

The most likely cause is the distributor cap. The one fitted to the 'k' series is quite crap. If you remove it you will probably find the carbon in the central tower will be worn. For what it costs, replace it along with the rotor arm. Do this first before changing the leads as I believe this is your problem and damp weather just makes it worse.

Caught the end of some documentary somewhere in the never regions of sky the other day. It covered self driving cars for motorway use, eg cars driving at 100mph+ speeds within feet of each other moving apart to filter in new cars and closing up gaps when cars left.

Who here would be interested in cars that did that, forgeting about all the logistical problems. Eg Leave home drive towards M25 choose destination, somewhere along the entry ramp the car then self drives itself towards its destination, when coming to the required exit ramp the car gradually gives control back.

Imagine that famed Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Win98 SE coming up at 85 mph on the M25 on a rainy winter's night!

Question Air Filter woes
Martin Wall

OK - I decided to get my car serviced on the cheap and got a Kwik Fit oil change - which was fine - and bought an air filter out of Halfords. Alas the air filter was about 2mm too big (Halfords patter part just the wrong size) so I had to put the old one back and the air filter 'box' in my old Japanese hatch needed a fair bit of pushing and shoving to get the filter back in. Since then I've noticed a roar when accelerating - quite pronounced at speed and the car is more hesitant to gain speed.

I guess too much air is getting in somewhere - yes? How can I find out - short of taking it to a dealer instead of being a cheapskate! Read more

Ventilation air filters have a useful secondary role in that they act as inlet silencers/sound attenuators, reducing the fan noise. If there?s a break in your filter housing or hoses, this may account for the increased engine noise/roar.

If so, then perhaps the weakened mixture would account for the loss of performance; I?m not sure on this, any tuning enthusiast care to advise?

Is the whole car ownership game taking on a different character? It seems that
(a) the buying public has to be continually fed trendy new models so that the big makers can keep their production lines running cost-effectively;
(b) at the other end, regulation and the effect of (a) mean that cars 8 or more years old are almost worthless. For some models this is not much longer than the original warranty. As the perceived life of a car shrinks, will typical owners see it as less worthwhile spending to maintain cars? Soon we shall have to copy the Japanese and export old vehicles just to move them on. The Lynx is a funny car; it looks like the illegitimate offspring of a Focus saloon and a Rover 45. Pretty it ain't.

I've never seen one in real life; I imagine it's based on the Mazda 323 platform though.
