Would you buy a car that had been previously owned by a smoker?

I wouldn't!

My colleague smokes sixty ciggies a day, and the interior of his car is like the inside of a railway tunnel (ish).

I've told him that any car in this state will be difficult to sell. He assures me that it will clean up OK.

Superficially it might, but behind the dash and panels and deep into the seats will surely remain impregnated with filth!

Any thoughts?

in fact with your improved abilities you should

be able to drive a bit quicker into that bend or
perhaps a little closer to the car in front.

You're on to something here NWS.

I'm bored of Eddie Jordan and the F1 rest moaning about the loss of tobacco sponsorship revenue.

If all the drivers chain-smoked different brands through the Grand Prix, not only would they go faster but they could regain lost revenue by telling us which were the go faster brands afterwards.

'I exited Eau Rouge at about 180 and sparked the Marlboro. Then I got the speed and courage to overtake. For sure.'

My Growler got chased last year by guys like this, I think he posted it along with some tips about what to do. Still got if anyone wants I think.

Glad he's got that big old V-8 that's very powerful, keeps those diesels away.

Have a good day over there. Read more

Growlette, makes interesting reading, we haven't quite got to that stage here yet, thank God; but car jacking is becoming more prevalent with the increase in car security.

'Agojo said the TMG group led by PO1 Ferdinand Villanueva, PO3 Querejero Fidel and PO2 Edwin Cuadra, who were all onboard two mobile cars, tailed the suspects vehicle.'
Love the difference in syntax from the UK, good job they were in mobile cars as opposed to the immobile sort. :-)

Hi,

I recently had the Cam Belt changed on my 1997 Renault Megane by the local Dealership. Shortly after the car came back I noticed that a bolt was missing from near the cam belt, I took this up with the dealer and they said that the bolt was just to hold the adjuster whilst they fitted the belt and they had kept the bolt off as they had been known to come loose and tear the belt.

It seems a little suspicious that they never mentioned this when I picked the car up - has anyone heard of this happening before or is it a ploy so only a dealer can change the belt in the future?.

thanks

Is the bolt in question near the top of the belt cover pointing towards the bulkhead in front of the driver? If so then I suspect they are being truthful.

Don't worry about all the congestion we're suffering from folks 'cos good old '2 jabs', sorry, '2 Jags' has come up with a foolproof solution. Yep, he's unveiling plans for 500,000 new homes to be built in the South East !!

No doubt he's expecting their inhabitants to ride bikes and make full use of the grossly underused public transport.

Is this total madness or just mild lunacy ? Read more

As a Northerner I would suggest the ideal solution would be to build a nice new motorway linking (say) Leicester to Dover/ Channel tunnel accessible only to those who have ferry/chunnel tickets. This would have the dual benefits of easing congestion on the eastern part of the M25 for those who live/work there and also mean that I would never have to go anywhere near it or the southern part of the M1 or M11 or M20 or M2/A2! I would be quite happy to stay out of the way of you Southerners! No offence intended!

can anyone suggest on why the speedometer on my 306 only works when the car is greater than 85 degree celcious. Would suspect failure of the gearbox hall effect sensors?? pls help Read more

maru

sorry dude, its when the engine temperature gets to 85 degree celcious, or perhaps driving around the tropical country town for 20 kilometres then only the Speedo work. I am sure that the 306 aren't cable driven. thanks Andrew

Bought new scenic from renault dealer which came with locking alloy wheel nuts, but no lock on the fuel cap.

seems a bit bizarre to include one without the other, is this normal practice ? Read more

Dave_TD

Yes, fuel flap will have a locking bolt that works with the central locking.

Ah, now I understand why you are concerned. An alarm specialist would be a good bet. In the meantime, for God's sake don't park near an airport!

He's just landed a new job and has celebrated by buying a used BMW Z3 M Coupe (the one with two seats and a hatch that looks like Batman's car). He got a good deal on it.
But then a friend saw the very same car in a back copy of EVO - it turns out that it was originally owned by BMW and used as their press car. It's got all possible extras and a blueprinted engine.
But what have the press boys done to it while performing all those head to tests ?
Can he expect something to blow soon ? Or will BMW have looked after it ?
Having said all that the car looks stunning, drives perfectly and only has 24K on the clock after 4 years.

Thanks very much everyone - I have reassured my brother that he is sane.
All he has to contend with now is a heavy clutch and a light wallet.

I have a Y reg new shape Mondeo 1.8LX 5dr hatchback for sale. I've been advertising it for about 6 weeks now, i've had it on the web on Auto Trader website, Loot website, a local classifieds website, and in print in the Northwest Auto Trader and my local weekly rag. I was originally asking £7995, but have reduced it to £7750.
The problem is i've had barely any responses apart from those annoying agencies who want £80 for the privilege of trying to match a buyer to your vehicle.

The vehicle is a July 2001 Y reg new shape Mondeo 5dr hatchback, it is usual LX spec, 4xEW 6xAB ac etc, etc, metallic, has non standard ford alloys, has only just turned 20,000 miles with an up to date service record. It is also taxed til July and has 18 months of Ford Direct warranty left up to Aug 04.

My local Ford dealer is still advertising the same vehicles, without alloys or tax, but obviously with warranty, for as much as £8995.
The question I have is am I expecting too much money?

I need an estate with good rear load space with performance, and would be grateful for any advice good/bad on new Octavia RS estate - I guess anything based on hatch would apply. Other possible is a couple of year old T5.
thanks.

Owning an Octavia TDi estate I would not say that it has good rear load space, not when compared with a Volvo T5 anyway. It's good for the size of car but a T5 is considerably bigger is it not ?

Matthew Kelly
No, not that one.
