Hi,

Just had the AA out this morning after what looks like the vacuum pump on my '96 Rover 420TDi seized up. Looking through these forums I noted that many turbo diesels have a combined alternator/vacuum pump, is this the case with mine? It was certainly attached to the alternator but I couldn't tell whether it was removable or not. Are these hideously expensive? Just wondered, just so I am prepared for the shock when the garage phones... Read more

The coil pack problem for 20 valve turbo cars in the VAG range is pretty well documented, I have a TT currently sitting at the dealers and therefore have been quite interested in all the news.

But does this issue affect other VAG cars. A work colleague who drives a 1.6 Seat Leon described his car sounding and behaving exactly like my TT did when the coil pack failed.
On taking the car to his SEAT dealer, the problem was diagnosed initially by simply listening to the engine. A failed coil pack being the problem. The coil pack was replaced the same day and his car is now running perfectly again.

(Must admit I am a little peeved that Seat have coil pack supplies on tap, whilst Audi have a 6 week back log.)

So do other engines in the VAG range use these rogue coil packs? which ones?
Shouldn't VAG issue a recall?

Bit of a trivial point this but it made me wonder.

Yesterday I was driving from Swindon to Gloucester (lucky old me) on the A419. At one point I saw a sign telling me that the M5 was 35 miles and Gloucester was 34. Odd, since you go under the M5 on the way to Gloucester. The next couple of signs said the same sort of thing: Gloucester closer than the M5. Then, I saw one with M5 13 miles, Gloucester 17, ie Glouceter 4 miles after the M5, which puts Gloucester in the right place.

No wonder the roads are so bad/busy when the powers that be cannot even measure distances correctly. Read more

Reasonable, the distance to the M5 is the distance to the signposted junction not simply the physical object. Never having been in the area, I can't comment on the accuracy of the figures but it's something to bear in mind.

But you're right, sounds inconsistent!

My family have bought me one of these driving experience vouchers where you can choose to drive a Ferrari!

Have any of the other Back-Roomers done this and what were their experiences, good or bad? I would be very interested to know.

Another good one, which may be slightly further afield, is Knightsbridge Garage, on the Hampshire/Berkshire border. It's on the A339 Basingstoke/Newbury road, in the village of Headley (just past Kingsclere). 01635 268099.

Question Diesel Engines
GeoPlay

As a converted diesel user could someone explain why on new family sized cars the turbo-diesel car costs approx. £1000 more than the petrol equivalent. Also why are we the only Country in Europe where diesel fuel costs more than petrol. Read more

dieselhead

doh! my middle paragraph should read ..

For a diesel operating at full power and at low speed (as when towing) the rate of heat-rejection to the COOLANT relative to the brake power output is significantly higher than a petrol engines despite the increased thermal efficiency - a result of the exhaust gases being rejected at a lower temperature and rate due to the lower engine speeds of a diesel.

I'm thinking about getting either getting a scooter or a motorbike for my journey into work. A scooter would save me £80 pound a month with no station parking charges, A bike would save me just under £300, obviously less the relevant costs.

I dont think my license covers any kind of bike, so i think i need to do an introductory course followed by the full license, i definatly wouldn't feel confident riding from watford to london everyday without full training.

Anyhow my question is does anybody know of decent schools in the watford area that can at least get me started. Tried looking on the internet but couldn't seem to find any.

Thanks

Quick recap of what I was trying to post:

Mopeds are dangerous outside towns, maybe even more so. Limited to 30, soon to be 27, you are being constatly overtaken by traffic going at up to 70.

I've had 3 CD250U's. They suit my stature and weight (5'8" and 11 stone). Manoeuverability in traffic good. Reliability excellent, 80k out of 1st one, no on-road breakdowns apart from punctures. 60k on present: ditto. Economical: 90 mpg, 4 litres per day for 80 miles. Cheap to buy, my 3 cost £1500, £950 and £250. Cheap to insure (<£100 p.a.)
Faults: tyres could be wider, front brake collects salt in winter; rear sprocket comes loose; chain uncased and wears fast and can't be upgraded to a heavier one as insufficient clearance.
Performance a little sluggish.

I also have a Honda Pantheon scooter (125) which performs almost as well.

For shorter distances (say 20 miles each way) my wife's Honda Bali 100 is adequate.

Can't comment on other bikes as I've stuck to and been happy with the 250's for the last 8 or 9 years.

HTH : apply for further details.
