NWS

I was offered an unregistered one (but pre the almost un-noticeable facelift) at £17,250.00 at a main dealer and I think was a lot more flexibility on price as well. I was amazed on the test drive to have the salesman urging me to red line it to feel the variable valve timing effect. This was the car he was hoping to sell me - it had 25 miles on it! Quick car but I couldn't help thinking of that Morrisey song - 'hairdresser on fire' Read more

Not much more will get a new RX8 NWS and from what I've seen, I know which I'd rather have. I just wish I could justify buying one !

You can fit a tuning box, or chip it, tuning box is better as is just plugs in and can be removed easily, cost about £200. There is info on these at www.ukmkivs-net. or the club gti website.

I have Euro-style number plates with GB strip which the AA says are sufficient for driving in France. However I've heard somewhere that certain parochial authorities in France also demand a separate GB sticker. Opinions / experience?

Right, well, sorry about that. At least I know what the yellow lead is plugged in for now - turns out it wasn't spare at all !!

We're here and insofar as I can see, working.

Assuming that is the case, I can now chase after that irritating little troll David Neve, although you will no doubt know him as cleanaroundthebend and may remember him as The Watcher.

Please don't rise to him. It takes him far longer to create an e-mail address and re-register than it takes for me to disable him again.

No doubt he will do this a few more times. I'd reckon it will take a couple of days to get bored or to find something else to turn his brilliant computer consultant mind to.

In the mean time, just ignore him and I will remove his new identities and the notes he enters as I get to them.

By all means contribute to the same threads as him, but avoid replying to his note specifically. If you do, then when I sweep the forum for his notes, the deletion will also take out any replies to him. I am really not going to put any manual effort into dealing with the little prune.

Also bear in mind that he'll probably enter loads of stuff under a new username at night when I'm not watching.

He wouldn't have managed so much dross today if I hadn't been busy anyway and having technical difficulties.

You do have to wonder what is in the mind of these people, and what makes them tick - or not tick, I guess.

Sorry about the interruption to service from our SQL issues, and apologies for the other little irritation.

Thank you Martyn for the above response, and thanks to Mark also for shortening the Omega-owner name. The monitor display is now back to "normal".

What HT leads should I use? Vauxhall ones or Halfords, or Bosch or some other?

Same question for spark plugs, how do you know what plugs to use because the Vauxhall ones have no ratings on them.

How do I know if the distributor is any good, I am going to remove it tomorrow, how do I remove it? what do I look for when I have it in my hands? Again what distributor should I replace it with, Vauxhall or Lucas or what?

Update..

The cost of Vx HT leads to me (trade price) not sure how much more they would be for public, is £60

Halfords set HIL 556 cost £30
Bosch set at Halfords (not stocked) B-808, cost £16
Motor factors quoted me £20 and £18 and the second motor factor pointed out to me that the standard set cost £18 whereas the sports set cost £60

So I conclude that the Vx set costing £60 are probaly of some higher quality than all the other cheaper ones, and the sports set are probably of equal quality with the Vx

I do have a DIS module which is probably fine.

I will probably clean up my existing plug leads, because the only thing wrong with them was that 1 & 2 got some oil inside them.

The plugs...I found that...

Champion RC10DMC at halfords costing £17

NGK 302 - BKR6EK at Halfords were £16.50

and Vx ones to public were about £3.90 each ( £2.28 ea. trade)
The car accompany manual said VX part No. 90 512 986 for spark plugs, however I was given spark plugs No. 91 132 006, and the Vx plug that came out of my car had "918" on the shaft and the new ones had "000" on the shaft, I have no idea what these 3 numbers stand for. and I will go back tomorrow to find out why I was not given the recommended plugs.

Before I start, Mark could you please move this to Discussion as it appears I cannot start a new thread there.

Hi

Just to let you all know, that I am not likely to be around as much as I have been for the past couple of years, for the foresseable future.

The reason being that my lovely wife has just given birth to a beautiful baby girl (Hannah) who will be requiring almost all of my previously devoted backroom time.

I will still drop in from time to time (most likely around the 3am mark).

Hi and thanks for all your kind words.

FiF, i'll take your money!

I'll have to check with the boss about posting pics, but it shouldn't be a problem, although I suspect that it will require the purchase of a new 'outfit' as part of the negotiations.

Question Bad Brava
stuartmc

Can anyone out there suggest why my Brava 1.6ELX will not cold-start? It's fine once you get it going and will hot-start no problem. Only other symptom is a rough idle.

Thanks

Could be one of several problems: Coolant temp sensor most likely but recommend diagnostic check.

Vx Om 2.0 16 Valve

Well I'm nearly finished, I have cleaned the throttle assembly, new gasket, and replaced the two breather pipes removed and cleaned the idle valve, new gasket, and checked that it still works.

made sure the vacuum hole ( the one for the rocker cover pipe )in the throttle housing was also clean, by squirting white spirit through it, and yes, I did mop it up from the inside of the air inlet manifold.

I have fitted an oil separator / filter on the top of the crankcase breather pipe, a part which was not originally fitted to my Omega. Part number 9 193 502 ( highly recommended to anyone with an older omega.)

I took off the rocker cover (because it had a leak into the spark plug wells.) I have cleaned the shiny area where the gasket will run. I cleaned the plug wells 1,2,& 3 were filthy and No. 1 was especially full of old sludgy oil ( as were 2 & 3 but not so much oil), thrown out the plugs.

So my questions are now:

1. What sort of silicone do I use to help seal the RC gasket?

2. Do I only use the silicone where the gasket has to go over the two humps at the front and the two dips at the back of the engine? or do I put the silicone all the way around the gasket.

3. Why is there two dips at the rear of the RC it's as if the cam shafts were designed to run all the way to the rear but they have changed the design and now we have the oddly shaped RC gasket which has to fill those two dips at the rear.

Any advice on what make and brand name of silicone to use, where to buy it, and how to apply it will be gratefully recieved.

all they need to do is to add some ultraviolet dye to the oil and then they can trace the scource of the leak. I suspect its the rocker covers as they do distort badly and need replacing ! not just new gaskets.

looking4car

I'm thinking of buying a car which the seller tells me is on the v register, cat c.

what does this mean ?

I suspect there are some well repaired, honest, well repaired bargains out there if you have cash in hand

If i pay 30 odd quid to one of these checking agencies what do they tell me, just that it has been damaged , or a description of the damage.

would a 100 quid AA check be worthwhile ?

Do they identify the damage & evaluate repair, and advise on value of car or simply say avoid this vehicle if it has been damaged.

any web sites out there which describe the register and what cat c might mean ?

Thanks

If you look on the Rovertorque site you will find this is a common problem with this engine. These motors suffer badly if oil changes have been skimped and regularly driven hard. There are two main culprits: oil passing through the turbos seals under high boost straight into the engine to be burnt (with some going straight down the exhaust too) and oil pull-over where oil is pulled up past the rings and is burnt. take a look at the inside of your throttle body - I'll bet it's as black as the Ace of Spades. If it is contact Steve at the club and he will provide you a copy of an article I wrote on how to clean it (or email me).

you could try sticking to a 10W40 semi synthetic (this engine was specified as needing at least semi) like Castrol Magnatec. Also try not to use high revs too much - try to make use of the low down torque this motor provides.

I drive my 800VS quite briskly most of the time (I have a 25 mile country route to work). It has 122k up and had been run on a mixture of Magnatec and Mobil 1 up to 88k (when I bought it) and on Halfords Fully Synthetic and Castrol RS since. It gets through around 1/2 (a half) litre per 1000 miles (slightly less using the Halfords oil). If I drive hard down the Fosse Way to see my brother (96 miles each way) the rate of consumption roughly doubles.

These engines are prone to blowing turbos too. Despite being water cooled they don't like it if you turn off when they are hot. Leave it running for a few minutes first. Also warm it up gently too - driving off at full chat from cold is a sure way to destroy the turbo.

Also check to see if it's leaving any on your drive. These are prone to 'cold' sump gasket leaks - which can be quite bad on some examples. I'm fortunate as the previous owner had the sump gasket replaced under warranty just before I bought it, but 2 yrs on it is now dripping about an egg cup full per 2 months onto the garage floor (I put cardboard down). Also check the front left corner of the head gasket for leakage. If yours is not leaking from either of these points then you have the only non leaking T series on the road I reckon!!!

Personally I'd point the finger of suspicion at the turbo and would consider a rebuild while it can still be rebuilt.
