People have commented here that changing one's pollen filter can make the car smell nicer and stop the interior misting up. I am getting heavy screen misting in my Peugeot 206, unless I use hot air to the screen all the time. The A/C is selected but obviously not producing cold air. The misting occurs whether I am on fresh air or recirculate. Help please:-

1. Does a 206 even have a pollen filter?
2. If it doesn't is there some blocked drainhole that might be trapping water in the system?
3. Any other ideas gratefully received.

Thanks in advance Read more

see Geof Cs reply in this thread. You may have the same problem - even if you have no pollen filter you will have a drain tube below the evaporator.

I've just been looking at past postings about the necessity to use this specific oil in pdi engines.
I was staggered at the price of this oil at VW dealers (about £9 litre) so I had this brilliant idea - Ford fit a 115bhp VW pdi engine in the Galaxy; surely Ford oil should be cheaper than VW? So I went to the local Ford dealer armed with the required Ford specification (which I got from a very helpful man at Shell Technical) - Ford M2C 917A.
Firstly the parts man had never heard of it and was very reluctant to look it up,
Secondly (Quote) "We never use it and we service lots of Galaxys (Galaxies?) here",
Thirdly (Quote) "Any good quality multigrade oil will do for diesels"!!
So beware if you have a Galaxy with this engine! If anyone has actually been able to buy this oil at a Ford dealer perhaps you could inform me.
P.S. Shell actually produce their own 505.01 Synthetic Based Passenger Car Diesel engine oil but it doesn't seem to be available to the general public, only to garages in large quantities. Read more

Thanks for Ford oil info. Especially details about filter.

For some time now I've had a rattle from the back of my MV6 saloon. I've tried everything to pin it down - to no avail. This afternoon I wanted to take a good look @ the wear on my rear tyres and lay down under the rear of the car. In the process I knocked the bottom of the tank and hey presto - what a noise.

So, question - is there anything inside the tank that could not be as secure as it should be - is it replaceble or do I need a new tank? Is this a red herring and do all tanks do this if thumped in the middle of the tank - I suppose I need to find another Omega, lay underneath it and do the thump test!

Advice comments please.

Hi,
Where do you buy those reversing mirrors that help you see the back of your car? My wife is getting used to our new estate and I want to buy something that will help.

Cheers. Would prefer to buy something online if poss. Read more

No Do$h

I had mine in current shape Rover 400 saloon and 'er outdoors found it allowed her to judge when the rear bumper was about 2 foot from whatever she was about to drive into. Usually at great expense.

Still, the car repairs were cheaper than the divorce (sigh) but I got a cracking deal on the new model (although her hubby didn't see it that way at the time)
No Dosh - but then who has?

Hi there,
Can any other owners advise whether 38mpg pootling around town is average with our 1999 1.7TD Astra estate? Seems thirsty to me - I was hoping for more, particularly as I drive quite gently around.
Hmmmm - anyone got any comparisons from their own experience?

I've a 97 Astra Estate TD (low pressure turbo Vauxhall engine) that seems to average 40-42 mpg over a commute of 25 miles B roads and 5 miles town driving. I was a little disappointed hoping for high 40's considering the majority is on the open road, but it's better that the old Volvo 240 auto estate at 25 mpg.

I was after the TDS with the Isuzu engine as the works van with that lump in I used to drive really flew (but I didn't check the mpg on it) but needs must and the TD was local and available.

I've tried the injector cleaner, paraffin in the tank and switching fuel brands mentioned elsewhere but nothing seems to have made much difference (avoiding spanner work as much as possible in sub zero conditions). The best thing was the "how to drive a diesel" thread that gave a few good pointers on engine revs and the like.

So now I know someone else gets about the same mpg as me I feel a bit better.

I have sourced a second hand bumper for my sons Peugeot 106, (the black plastic one i.e. not coloured)due to accident damage to the original one. It is in very good condition except for a very small area (about 4 ins x 2 ins)that has got some silver spray paint on.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to cover this mark.
I did think of trying to rub some black shoe polish on. I also have been advised that "Hycote stone guard" from a spray can will cover it well, but i am concerned that if I paint a small bit that I will have to do it all, and that in the height of summer that it may start flaking.Has anybody on this forum used this product before?
Does anybody have any good ideas. The siver paint is very thin, but where I have scraped it off the bumper now appears grey.

According to the Highway Code red+amber means stop but as you're already stopped, what are you supposed to do?
Most people begin to move off if the road is clear but is this an offence?
I believe that traffic light cameras take one photo as a vehicle crosses the white line and another to determine that it actually crossed the junction or whatever, i.e. that it didn't make an emergency stop after crossing the line. What does the camera record if someone starts to cross on amber+red?

Toad, of Toad Hall.

(e) the amber signal shall, when shown alone, convey the
same prohibition as the red signal, except that, as respects any
vehicle other than a tramcar which is so close to the
stop line that it cannot safely be stopped without proceeding beyond
the stop line,

Of course sometimes you have to really cane it it to get up to a speed where you "cannot safely be stopped without proceeding beyond the stop line"... ;-)

I recently came upon this site and read with interest the problems with seized spark plugs on the Ford Ka. and Fiesta with the 1.3 engine. Unfortunately it was too late to save me the £200 it cost to remove seized plugs on a 2 year Ka which had been serviced at 10000 and 20000 miles by a Ford dealer.

The Ka is an excellent car to drive and is very reasonably priced but owners should be aware that the Ford service schedule does not include removing the spark plugs until 30000 miles or 3 years by which time they will almost certainly be seized. From now on I'm getting the car serviced at a local garage which changes the plugs at the 10000 mile service.

The same comments for seized spark plugs apply also to the bolt which secures the spare wheel. It's a good idea to remove the spare wheel and grease the bolt once a year otherwise it may be impossible to remove the spare wheel when it's most needed.

This problem was covered very fully in an earlier thread, - just do a search "Ford Ka seized spark plugs" where there are approx 70 replies.

Have tried a few dealers locally, but all sold out.
Anyone know of one in stock anywhere in the UK?

Cheers

(I know this is a bit old hat now, but....) I walked into my local VW main dealer on 30th Dec and ordered a 5dr job for end-May delivery. £1k deposit, job done. Don't mind the wait, I prefer to pay the £23k list than the £26k, £27k, £28k, etc.... on Autotrader.co.uk etc....

How much did you pay (if it's not a rude question) and have you already taken delivery? If so, I'd guess somewhere between 25k - 30k??

But more interested to know your experience of driving it.

I have a 4 door Peugeot 306 the doors all lock when I use the key in the drivers door, but when I use the key to lock the doors from the passenger side the other doors lock acept for the drivers door.

If I use the central locking remote the doors lock and unlock stright away.

Please can anyone help. Read more
