I have a son who has a poor grasp of car electrics & is constantly wrestling with such problems on his modern classic.

Which book would you recommend to assist him in becoming more capable in this area ?

My old man has a 97 Passat TDI and it's due a service.He intends to use his local non VW garage to do the work,but it appears the guy doesn't have the necessary to reset the computer.At the moment it's showing inspection.How can it be done without the need to go to VW as this will kinda defeat the object?

Luxury car prototype by Dilip Chhabria unveiled at motor show

PTI[ TUESDAY, JANUARY 07, 2003 12:21:45 PM ]
DETROIT: India's automobile development expertise finally drove to the global arena with the unveiling of a new luxury car prototype by UK-based Aston Martin at the international motor show on Tuesday.

Built by Mumbai-based designer Dilip Chhabria, the prototype of the 'AMV8 Vantage Concept' car was unveiled at a glittering show by Chairman and CEO of Prime Automotive Group Mark Fields to the world media at the ongoing North American International Motor Show here.

Prime Automotive Group handles all the premier brands of the world's second largest automaker Ford Motor Company, like Austin Martin, Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover.

This is the first time that an international car maker has utilised the services of an Indian design firm for prototype building and it is likely to give Dilip Chhabria Design a much-needed stepping stone for foraying into the highly-competitive global automobile design market.

What landed Chhabria the job was his impressive display of the 'Infidel', a sports car prototype with medium sized engine at the Geneva Motor Show in March last year.

DC Design has built the entire compact two-seater from the scratch based on designs supplied by Austin Martin. The prototype is powered by an all-new V8 engine and its body and chassis is made of aluminium and carbon fibre composites.

Austin Martin CEO Ulrich Bez said the prototype was of "very good quality" and its platform would be the basis for all future models of the company, whose cars have been made legendary by the James Bond movies.

Question Uniroyal Tyres
rg

Folks,

I am planning to replace my nearly worn fronts on the XM 2.5 TD estate with Uniroyals. or maybe rotate the health backs to the front. (discuss - arrgghh)

Anyone got any expereince of the brand? Particularly on the XM. Have Andy Bairsto or Terry B left the building?

Michelin Pilotes are on at the moment. The Uniroyals are £15 cheaper. From my local long-established Tyre centre, Derek Campbells in Yarm, North Yorkshire.

Buy them!

Had 2 sets on the XJ, got about 40,000mls from 1st by swapping front to back, to even wear.

Went for ZR rated for 2nd set, noticed how much quieter they were in comparison.Still loads miles left after we covered 25,000mls.

Very good value/deals each time we bought, ao no need to go for 'budget' names, really.

Many new cars now have warning indicators showing that a service is due. I always had the impression that these were dictated to some extent by the type of journeys undertaken, and the way in which a car was driven. For example my father used to have an A Class and when he enquired of the main dealer when his first service was due they were able to run some diagnostics to tell him.

However I have recently bought a VW Passat TDI and the handbook appears to indicate that service should be carried out every 10k miles or earlier.

Does anyone have any knowledge about whether the operation of these differs between manufacturers?

They use a formula to work out how many miles between services. The one for BMW is below:-Mileage is estimated based on the following formula:

e= a(1+t+r)

e=Estimated mileage
a=Actual mileage traveled
t=1 if engine temperature is below operating temperature, else t=0
r=.5 if engine is above 4500 RPM, else r=0

Example: If you traveled 5 miles with a cold engine running at 5000 RPM, the SII computer would actually "estimate" 12.5 miles traveled:

Solving for e:

a=5 (the actual miles traveled)
t=1 (because the engine was cold)
r=.5 (the engine was exceeding 4500 RPM)
e=5 X (1+1+.5)=12.5 estimated miles (from a trip of only 5 miles)

In a current issue of a respected biker mag there are some tips from experienced motorcyclists one of which suggests carying a shower cap to put over your numberplate when you park illegaly - he is a courier. The reasoning behind this is that a traffic warden is not allowed to remove the shower cap to gain access to the registration number. Is this just a load of old tosh? Read more

Friend has a 309 1.4 carb (Im posting the difference in case its relevant.) Mine (ok Mums ,and up for sale) - the i - runs badly from cold under any attempted hard acceleration. Misfires (I think.)The friend's Dad, who looks after her car, reckons that 'Peugeot say the spark plugs should be set at 32000 but Heatons [the garage] set the at 28000 and its better from cold.'
Makes no sense to me but could this be true? Read more

It's been one of those days at work. Have been juggling figures all morning and got those wrong as well. Sorry for any confusion guys. The 28 and 32 thou measurements I mentioned in my earlier thread are correct though - honest.

Hi I am new to this Forum, but has anyone out there any experience at importing a car from abroad. I am on thne verge of importing a Honda from Holland and would like to be aware of any pitfalls out there or if there is any where in the Uk that can match the deal I am getting from abroad.

Naf, (What is that a nickname for)
This only proves that even the best car manufactures can get it wrong, remember the publicity about the Mercedes mini overturning on corners.
I realy should have tried the car out on the roads in Northumberland where I live before deciding but my nearest dealer is over 30 miles away.
If I do decide to "put up and shut up" and live with what I and now Honda UK deem to be an unsatisfactory ride quality I will certainly enjoy the rest of the car which I can not fault especially the "magic seats". BTW in Japan where I have visited a number of times recently the "Fits" as they are called there come with the wind protectors as standard as do most cars over there.

Sterminator

Anyone

I have recently noticed my 306 (98 S) is taking a lot of effort to put in gear, any gear. Particular force required to get to 2nd (from either 1 or 3) and all areuncomfortably ropey.

Have tried pushing the clutch pedal right into the floor which sometimes helps, and occasionally if I get the stick movement just so, a smoothish change happens. Previously all was very smooth. Any advice that wo't end up in a 300 quid bill gratefully received.

Cheers

fine when the engine is off. Clutch pedal typically lower than the others. Me thinks the cable needs sorting out - whether it be loosening/tightening/replacing.
