January 2003
Whilst walking to the station this morning, I witnessed a car reverse out of his drive and into an Audi parked on the street opposite. As he quickly drove off without investigating, it seems likely that he will not contact the Audi owner. I feel morally obliged to do something, esp. as I was the only witness, although the damage did not seem great in the darkness, it will undoubtedly cost money to rectify.
I am reluctant to make personal contact due to risk of retribution (and it is also not clear which house the Audi belonged to).
I would appreciate advice from backroomers ? I have thought of dropping a line to the local police with the appropriate reg. no?s.

There's a picture in the print edition. The aim couldn't have been better if it had been placed there using a crane. Seems you have to think of everything when parking these days.

That's what I did with my LR. Bought whilst the worse for cheap wine I ended up driving it accross Spain. Total cost including a return ticket on a Ferry (conned them I never came back !) was in the region of 300 quid. SVA in the UK after buying various bits and bobs to bring it up to UK spec.
Last night at about 10.30 a neighbour of mine had a knock on the door. His wife answered to find a middle aged woman claiming to have locked herself out and asking for a lift to Bromley (5 miles) so she could get a spare set of keys from her mother. Apparently her
immediate neighbours around the corner were indisposed and couldn't assist. Anyway being the kind hearted soul he is, my friend agreed to take her and went to get his car keys. At this point his wife told him to take one of the kids with him so that there was no chance the woman could make up some story about him having sexualy assaulted her or something similar. Rather naively, he queried the need for this but relcutantly agreed. Anyway, they arrived in Bromley about 15mins later and heasked where she wanted dropping off. At this point the woman said Croydon - about another 5-10 miles away ! At this point my friend protested, told her to get out at the nearest bus stop and went home.
All very strange eh ? I can't imagine what was behind all this but I feel my friend was very silly to have got involved and had he not taken his wife's advice he could have wound up in a Police cell or worse.
A few weeks ago I was in a similar position when aksed to take a young female friend of my wife's home from the pub. They had been to a work 'do' and she was totally out of it !
I agreed but only on condition that my wife accompanied us. When we dropped her off outside her home my wife had to help her get out of the car 'cos she could hardly walk and I was imagining all the problems that could have occured had we been on our own and I'd had to do it myself. As it was, her moronic boyfriend got very upset about it !
How sad it is that, because of the risk of false allegations, a man can't help a woman without putting himself at serious risk !
It's worse that that though 'cos a few months ago I took my young son with special needs to the park. We arrived to find just a few people and children who quickly disappeared leaving us and a single girl aged about 4 alone in the park ! I was already feeling uncomfortable when she approached me and asked to be puched on the swing next to my son. I didn't know what to do and was franticly looking for a parent but could see no-one. I decided we should go but then thought what might happen to her if I left her alone. I then thought about calling the cops but started imagining what the young girl might claim if she were to get into trouble. NIGHTMARE - I decided to sit it out and about 10 minutes later a dozy looking woman appeared with her dog and proceeded to drag the little girl off shouting at her as they went !
My God what's the world coming to when parents behave like that and ordinary decent folk are too frightened to get involved ! Read more

Hi Folks, occasionally some of us can't resist the temptation to bring stuff like politics into threads (and very good fun it is too - yesterday's H.H. thread fondly remembered !).
However, I'm aware that Mark & co don't always appreciate it so I'm wondering if anyone out there (calling Toad !!) has any suggestions for other (good) forums where someone like me can find stuff like that.
I don't want to be part of anything too extreme (don't mind rules of engagement) so has anyone got any recommendations for a site where I can have a laugh and get this politics stuff off my chest ?
Mark - Hope you don't mind but I can't access the 'I have a question' thread so posted this here. If you're going to move it could you wait until a few replies have been posted otherwise I won't be able to get the info. Ta ! Read more
>>Many apologies to Mark then, I wrongly presumed it had been 'censored' for being too political.
I am devastated that you should think such a thing of me !
Has anyone any experience of timing belt tensioner failure with these engines?
Thanks

Andrew,
I know many folks have run this engine type without problem but I hate them. When you are laying your reputation on the line there seems to be a stress after every one as to how long it will go.
I now add a small note to the bottom of each invoice that reads along these lines...
"When a timing belt is replaced at 40-50,000 miles on a normal engine it is reasonable to expect the new belt to last a similar period. Unfortunately with this Vauxhall unit it is not possible to give this assurance due to the unpredictable nature of the failures across this whole engine type"

What exactly is this speedgear system? I've seen a number of classified ads (on ebay) for these which describe them as 7 speed tiptronic manuals that can be used as automatics. I've not heard of any other car, auto or manual, with 7 speeds (unless you include reverse). Read more
I've had one for 2 years and so far it's great. The manual change is largely a waste of time,it goes best on Drive economy which limits the revs to 4000 max.
If you need more acceleration the economy mode can be switched off with a button near the gera lever.
I bought the car from Trade |Sales at Slough and bought a 5 year warranty at the same time in case the gearbox fails. The warranty requires servicing by a dealer OR a VAT registered garage,so I use my local man who has looked after all my cars for about the last 20 years.
When he tried to get the internal and external flilters for the gearbox for the 24k service it took several days. The storeman at the dealer said they did not usuallly bother with them!!
What would happen if the gearbox faile d and the warranty co. had found that these filters had not been replaced, had I used the dealer for servicing.
The warranty co. is the same one Fiat use for their extra warranties.
By the way the Speedgear has 6 speeds, but in Drive the final drive is longer giving lower revs at cruising speeds.
At any speed the box always feels "in gear".
I've had autos for the last 28 years and to drive this is the best.
Further to the thread about differing spec oils for diesel engines, does it matter if I top up my Laguna 2.0 petrol engine with a bit of diesel oil that goes into my Toyota Hi Ace ?
Hope not cos I've done it ! Read more
Glad that's all cleared up.
For what it's worth, I dunno.
No Dosh - but then who has?
Considering changing my petrol A4 and a local dealer has a very nice A4 Avant 2.5 Tdi Quattro. It's 3 years old with 90k miles and has a fully stamped up Audi Service History. Anyone got any experience with this model especially regarding the reliability of the quattro set-up?? Any help much appreciated..

Thanks for the feedback guys. Re: the cambelt issue I'm going to budget to replace as a precaution and I've been advised to check that the vehicle was recalled for remedial action regarding cylinder head issues.
Now to sweet talk the bank manager (and wife)....
Cheers,
Jimmy
For years I have had my heart set on one of these beasts!! Now it might finally come true. Only one worry - now I've heard all the usual caveats - rotor tips, speialist service history etc but as a reasonably capably DIYer can I expect to do most of the [[potential repairs myself. Are parts expensive? Any experience? Read more
