Non motoring forums ? - volvoman
Hi Folks, occasionally some of us can't resist the temptation to bring stuff like politics into threads (and very good fun it is too - yesterday's H.H. thread fondly remembered !).

However, I'm aware that Mark & co don't always appreciate it so I'm wondering if anyone out there (calling Toad !!) has any suggestions for other (good) forums where someone like me can find stuff like that.

I don't want to be part of anything too extreme (don't mind rules of engagement) so has anyone got any recommendations for a site where I can have a laugh and get this politics stuff off my chest ?

Mark - Hope you don't mind but I can't access the 'I have a question' thread so posted this here. If you're going to move it could you wait until a few replies have been posted otherwise I won't be able to get the info. Ta !

Try pistonheads.com you can talk about cars and politics on their forum I beleive. I have looked at it but I have never contributed, I haven't got the time.

Have a look at the forums on Guardian Unlimited. Wide variety lots of political + other themes. I'm sure you'll find something to suit.

Happy argumenting Phil I

Volvoman if you have strong political issues you wish to air, I would suggest that this forum or any other for that matter is not the correct place. The only way to target the political
issues that cause you and your friends & family considerable concern, is to write directly to your local M.P. at The House of Commons, and let him/her know in no uncertain terms. You then stand a chance of bringing the matter directly to the attention of the people who make the decisions, whereby to raise issues on any forum(such as this), would be totally futile

Unless it's election year I think asking anything of your MP is futile, at least debating with others allows you to get things off your chest.

Dude - believe me I've done lots and lots of letter writing to MP's, ministers and many, many other people in positions of power !

I agree that serious and strongly held views on very important issues are best communicated to such people and wasn't really talking about such things in my original post. Just want to mix some serious stuff with a laugh or two, or three ! Not interested in ranting, bullying and/or intolerance :-)

How about giving me some addresses HF so I can make my own mind up ?

Possibly the Current Affairs forum on Tiscali would suit you? www.tiscali.co.uk/forums will take you to the full index.

It's quite lively, with its own resident know-all with over 10K posts to his 'credit'.

Never come across that one! DB is the one - I defy you to post anything that he doesn't have an opinion on.

Frostbite - Try doing a search for bogush and you'll find out what sort of character he was but be prepared for some long posts !!

"..yesterday's H.H. thread fondly remembered"

It seems to have found its way into Mark's latest speeding thread. I agree with your sentiment, VM, as I like the arena here - it has the sort of people that I would like to find in my pub (to continue a well-used analogy), and I don't really want to go off and find another bar/forum. As you imply, it would be nice if we could wander off-topic occasionally - personally, I don't see the harm, especially when there are motoring spin-offs. Then we wouldn't have to put (motoring link) in as a preservation manoeuvre!

Don't know about the links mentioned above, Volvoman, but every other forum I've ever seen is packed full of weirdos and undesirables that I really don't think you'd want to communicate with. This forum is friendlier, more helpful and better-run than any other in my experience - which is why I stay here and avoid all the others.

Totally agree JBJ & Doug!

Thanks Phil, VD5D & Frostbite.

I love this forum and apart from brief episodes of ranting and madness by one or two people, it does feel like a place I go to be with friends, albeit ones I'm sadly never likely to meet.

Thanks again all !

Many apologies to Mark then, I wrongly presumed it had been 'censored' for being too political.

I don't have addresses, V, they're not places I've kept a note of, just things I've stumbled across from time to time! Just bear in mind that some of these places have the most low-life people on them that you could imagine, and I'm not exaggerating.

What HF - you mean worse than in Swanley ?

HF - methinks you just don't want me to know where you've been hanging out ;-)

Worse than the Crays, V!!! I'm not withholding info, I'll let you know if I think of anything :)

HF, babyworld.co.uk (don't laugh) is quite benign, but they don't know much about timing belts...

Erm - are you suggesting something, JBJ?
I haven't looked yet, and I'm sure it's qute benign, as you say, but it wasn't me that was asking for alternative sites ;)

Hmmm- further to this, just looked up the site - 'The world's number one site on pregnancy and babycare'!!!!!

JBJ I'm sorry, that is just not my thing! So apologies to all, I will be sticking around here as long as I'm allowed to.

"I will be sticking around here as long as I'm allowed to."

Glad to hear it, HF. All I meant was that there are some other forums with a reasonable clientele, but they don't necessarily include people with the same interests. FWIW, I used babyworld a year or two back, but these days I have to negotiate with my son to use the computer, now he's nearly five!

Thanks, JBJ.

Know what you mean about the negotiation with youngsters - my 2 thankfully clubbed together the other week to buy a PS2, which means thankfully that they are not just now interested in the computer except for homework purposes (which is as it should be!)

Try forums.handbag.com/

They have a variety of sub-headings, and are virtually censorship free. They invite you to "vent your spleen" on the news forum!
