Hi folks
Anyone experience a fuse continually blowing in an Omega ? Mine's a '95 CDX 2.5TD.
The fuse is f15, rated at 15A, and used (it seems) for a lot of the 'toys' in the car - windows, sunroof, mpg-computer, reverse-gear-switch, bulb-health-monitor, dash gauges (incl. speedometer !) etc. As soon as I turn the ignition key, the fuse blows. I have removed all other fuses and relays and just tried this one fuse plugged in - it still blows. I've put a 20A fuse in there, and that blows too. I've unplugged all of the lights at the rear of the car and tried - fuse still blows.
I've done a search of this forum for answers (and jeez, what a lot of Omega articles) but haven't found an answer. I am pretty good mechanically, but electrics are a bit of a mystery to me. The Haynes manual includes a wiring diagram which is useful, but doesn't show where diesel-related parts might be (eg. filter heater).
Anyone have any ideas ? Sorry if this is an FAQ - the car has been great so far, but I'm stuck now.
Thanks

As well as my oil leak problem (see other post!) the passenger side electric mirror will adjust up and down but not left and right. Reading some of the other posts regarding electric windows and central locking on the 306, it seems likely that the cause is a broken wire in the loom between the door and a-pillar - has anybody had (and fixed) this problem? Read more
Hi Owen,
I had the same problem on my 306. Peugeot dealer quoted 5 hours
labour to remove door & replace part of the loom.
A local auto-electrician managed to identify which wire was at fault & then wired in an additional loop of cable - Cost £10.
I also had the electric window problem but never got that fixed.

Advice which I used to practice untill this car when I didn,t bother almost to my cost.
When you get new tyres swop the best one for the spare, otherwise the spare will end up old and perished with cracked sidewalls about to give up the ghost.
Mine went flat while waiting at tyre centre less than 15 miles and 24 hours from the time it had to be used. Read more
Hi Guys hope you will be able able advise
My 1999 30k mile Saxo VTR seems to have developed a intermittent problem with the oil warning light. About 1 time in 5 when starting the car the light flashes for approx 10 seconds, I've checked the oil level and this is fine, this seems to happen when the car is on a level and a hill and both when it's cold and hot.
Also maybe connected my fuel guage is all over the place, when I started it this morning it was on reserve for about 5 mins and then shot up to 1/4 tank.
Thanks

Thanks for the advice, it seems to have sorted itself out now !
Bloke at work tells me that the economy and performance of his VR6 Golf is awful. He's been told that the pistons (and bores?) are glazed and need a head strip and clean.
1. Does this sound feasible?
2. Is there a cheaper solution (e.g. gallon of nitric acid down the spark plug holes should clear the b***** out)
3. I remember decoking liquids, etc, but I assume the rubbish blown out would damage the catalytic converter.
Any advice gratefully received - he'd write himself but he's a bit shy.

Thanks to you all.
My chappie saw what you had all said, then decided to take your advice, not believe the garage, and take a look himself, with the help of his dad. Checked everything, then (by his telling) scoffed as his father said "why not check if there's a spark?". Persuaded at last, he found that at least one of the cylinders was getting no spark.
Back to the diagnosing garage, where they gave him a thingy to look inside the engine (where he could neither see nor understand anything) and told him his pistons were glazed and the bore ridged. He explained about the spark and they laughed at him. He eventually forced them to replace his (and I get vague here) coil box (???) with a spare they had and, hey presto, car runs fine. Buys a replacement coil box (or whatever) for a couple of hundred quid from VW (no-one else had one) and he now says the car is pulling better than at any time since he's owned it - he even thinks it might have been off when he bought it.
Result: Backroom boys 1, Dodgy dealer 0
Other result, he's been going to that garage for a while, and now, thanks to their incompetence, he's told everyone he knows what they are like.
Again, thanks to you all.

I have a 2001 115 pd golf. Recently had a new change over valve fitted under warranty.
fuel consumption has gone up by 15% on like for like journeys
dealer says the car is set up properly now.
would this valve have starved fuel so much when not operating properly prior to new fit?

no idea
engine had major flat spot on rapid acceleration.
diagnostic picked up this fault.
its reference on the warranty invoice was N/STK Valve
Funny that this should be written at a time when everyone is worried about their ice-driving skills, but perhaps this will be a little safety reminder for the Back Room.
Last night my smoke alarm chose to malfunction and shriek the house awake no less than three times, starting about 2 am. I ended up taking the fuse out, despite my usual attitude that it should always be operational. Due to the cold weather, my alarm is set three quarters of an hour earlier than usual to allow for a safe travel time, so my actual sleep time over the night probably totalled no more than an hour. I dosed myself with coffee at breakfast and throughout the day at work, which was just as well since the heating in the office chose to operate at low output only. Having spent a sleepless night and a freezing day, I was not in top form. I got in the car, turned the heat up to full and started my 50-minute journey home just after 6 pm. The car was soon lovely and warm. At about 6.35, while I was cruising along the motorway at around 55, my wife rang me on the mobile. Good thing too, because I had just fallen asleep at the wheel.
I knew I was tired, and for that reason had been deliberately driving quite moderately for the whole journey. But I hadn't thought for a second that I was in any danger of actually nodding off, although I do remember thinking that the drive was starting to get a little hypnotic. Of course, after jolting awake I pulled onto the next offslip and walked around for a few minutes to get the blood going before completing my journey with the heating turned down.
I know this probably only lasted a couple of seconds, because I was less than a half a mile beyond the onslip when the phone rang. Still, the thought of the possible consequences, and what I could have been responsible for, horrifies me. From now on, turning up on time and doing a full day's work when I am exhausted will no longer be a priority. Good night everyone. Read more
Good. Thanks for the reply.
I,ve failed the MOT on these bearings. Can anyone tell me if you need to remove the suspension strut to replace them or not. The workshop manual isn,t very clear on this.
Thanks Read more
The same happened with the mk3 top mounts i got from german and swedish, they weren't as good as the genuine vw ones.
I can't find anything about this so I was hoping a backroomer will know something.
I've got a Yaris 1.0 GLS on a W plate. Now, according to the website and a Yaris brochure I have from 2001 the GLS model comes with air conditioning. However, mine hasn't got it. I'm assured by the dealer mine is genuine UK spec, so is there any reason why it wouldn't have the aircon? Was the spec upgraded after my car was built? I should add that it does have a sunroof which is not listed as part of the GLS spec in the brochure I have.
Thanks for any info. Read more
Hmmm... I'll give the dealer 'higher spec than the (newer) GS you were looking at'... Nice of him to point out what I wasn't getting.
Thanks for your answers, folks.
I got this email today. It may be genuine but looks like a scam to me. I can't believe that people who have worked on a project for 21 years can know so little about industry contacts. Sorry it's a bit long.
I've removed the return email address to discourage any Back-Roomers from getting involved! ...

It reads like the Nigerian money-laundering letters.
I believe that the police have a unit dealing with these scams, I'll probably forward it to a contact.
Whatever you do, don't respond.

I am going to keep my Omega for now. A friend of mine has told me its best, also it might come in handy this winter if there is any snow around, as there is a snow button by my autobox (and I now the snow button works as a friend has used it before and it's like being in a 4x4 - as long as you drive slow and carefull with the snow button on).
My car is like a tank now. I actually call it 'The Tank'. My friends call it 'The Beast'. lol
