Further to the thread about differing spec oils for diesel engines, does it matter if I top up my Laguna 2.0 petrol engine with a bit of diesel oil that goes into my Toyota Hi Ace ?
Hope not cos I've done it !

Bernie,
I would say that diesel engine oil has a more arduous duty than the equivalent for petrol engines (higher crankshaft loadings and more soot) so I wouldn't worry so long as the viscosity range was about right.
|
Diesel oil is obviously far less volatile, so my guess would be that if the car starts OK in this cold weather, and runs OK (e.g. no pinging), you'll get away with it.
|
Oz - what do you mean, volatile? We are talking sump oil here, which is not volatile at all, or it wouldn't stay there long. I presume you are thinking of the Heavy Oil that is still entered on the V5 for a diesel car?
|
Andrew - I'm referring to diesel fuel oil, as even this evaporates/vapourises far less quickly than petrol (witness the persistence of diesel puddles on garage forecourts or roundabouts, referred to in a separate thread). Diesel has a much higher flash point and therefore needs a higher temperature to initiate combustion.
|
Oz - agreed. But how does this answer Bernie's question, which is to do with viscosity, lubricity, etc.?
|
My mistake Andrew - thought Bernie was intending to add diesel to his fuel tank. Don't mind me, a heavy cold plays havoc with your vision.

Check the oil spec. on the can. If it's got an ACEA A2 or A3 rating, ot the older API SG, SH, or SJ rating then it's OK, certainly for a top up. Any of these are petrol engine ratings.

We all (except Oz) assumed that Bernie was talking about topping up the lubrication oil. However what Bernie actually said was
>.....if I top up my Laguna 2.0 petrol engine with a bit of diesel oil .....<
however the context should have been the giveaway.
Being pedantic this could be interpreted in at least 3 different ways!
1Diesel Fuel in the petrol tank
2Diesel Fuel in the sump
3Diesel rated lubrication oil in the sump
(I have discounted the possibility of Diesel rated librication oil in the fuel tank).
All 3 are possible mistakes if you have a row of cans containing different grades of oil and diesel fuel!Particularly when it is cold and dark!
Bernie, please put us fully in the picture.

Sorry for any misunderstanding guys,my question was about engine oils.I thought the reference to the other oil thread would have made that clear but I can see what you mean !
|
Glad that's all cleared up.
For what it's worth, I dunno.
No Dosh - but then who has?
