Have anyone out here ever tried to insure a Transit sized van on a private motor policy?

My efforts to insure my Renault Trafic Van have finally paid off with a £360 TPFT premium inclusive on an introductory discound on the strength of my NCB on the main car. I was hoping for a cheaper quote.

I use the van to renovate my own house (We're moving to a place that needs a lot of work. I have worked out that it is just about cheaper to run a 2nd car to cope with all the mess etc, saving money on skip hire, material delivery costs, soiling the car etc. And we will use it to move house, thereby saving money on hiring a van.

When I have run two cars, the second had usually attracted a 2nd car discount, roughly equivilent to full NCB on the first. The only proviso was that I had to demonstrate that I ran two cars, and had the NCB. This doesn't work too well with vans, unless they are car derived vans (eg Ford Escort van).

Now I come to a vehicle that is still PLG class and can be driven on a car licence and only one insurance company was prepared to give an introductory discount.

Many commercial vehicle insurers did not wish to quote for privately used vans, despite what is surely a much lower risk.

Many main stream car insurers would not quote for vehicles of this type at all.

Often insurers that would quote seemed to put a loading on for the fact that I am not self employed and will be using the van for private use only, despite the fact that I am intending to do less than 10,000 miles per annum, as opposed to the average commercial milege of 30,000+.

Excuses that I have received include:-

Private policies have been abused by people using these vehicles for gain. - So why don't you treat everyone as self employed and we can all benefit from the discount?

People who drive vans up to 30,000 miles per year are less likely to have an accident that those people who do 5,000 to 10,000 miles per year. - WHAT????? - Run that past me again! So White Van Man who doesnt give a damn is a better risk than someone who is basically using the vehicle as a second car and will drive it as such?

This all seems a bit bazarr.

Is there anyone out there that can explain the logic behind all this?

Is there anyone out there that has got this problem or has found a way around it?

The problem is, what do I do next year when my intro discount is not there?

With the advent of low sulphur diesel, would it be a good or bad idea to add a quantity (5% or 10%?)of vegetable oil in with the diesel for injector pump/valves/upper cylinder lubrication purposes?
It burns ok and is cheaper than derv too. Read more

ULSD is not a problem for modern diesel engines really - they've been designed for its use. If you want to use something as an additive or alternative fuel I would suggest you try to source (or, if you're feeling adventurous, make) some biodiesel. Its high lubricity is a bonus for your engine, while it is much more refined than vegetable oil and therefore far less likely to cause any clogging/coking problems. I've done almost 20k in a VAG TDi on the stuff from new without a hitch, with occasional use of mineral diesel when my supplies ran out.
As I've mentioned in other threads, if you put a tankful of biodiesel into your car after it has done a significant amount of mileage on ordinary fuel, it will clean all the crud out of your tank and deposit it on the fuel filter, so wait until a few hundred miles before the next service so you don't end up changing the fuel filter twice.
Try a search on this site for the threads called "Rix Biodiesel" and "Top Gear and Cooking Oil" for a fair amount of discussion and information. Also take a look at biodiesel.infopop.net as well as www.biofuels.fsnet.co.uk/biobiz.htm for a list of biodiesel suppliers in the UK.
If you're particularly keen on using veggie oil, you need to consider if your engine is direct or indirect injection, as indirect injection is more suited to veggie oil. Rotary fuel pumps and veggie oil are not a great idea. That said, I don't think 5% or less will make a difference in either case, but do some research first starting with the links above.

HJ,
With regard to your article on the contract for Vauxhall Rental cars. 66,000 cars for £900M = £13,636 each average cost - as you say at list prices.

Any idea what ANC are paying for them? £500-600M?

They are to sell them at 6 months old. Will they sell them for more than they paid for them?

Yes, I'd agree about rental company drivers, having seen many 'renters' disappear after return with a quick run to the rev limiter.

In my experience none of these cars have the ECU tweaked, and they sure can get a hard time. I recall one conversation at work about which cars had 'hard' and which had 'soft' rev limiters for example.

I am picking up my Mother in Laws Polo Coupe (1985, 35000 miles) from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in a couple of weeks, FOC to us. It has never done the miles it needs to to keep the engine in really good nick but we can get £250 for the Panda so can afford to spend money on the engine on the Polo. With other VWs we have had, I have used various engine flushing oils such as Forte or STP to clean the engine before I changed the oil, but only for the 10 minutes before the oil was changed. I had thought that a good idea would be to put a flushing oil in the engine before I brought it down to Huddersfield (125 miles) and then do a full oil and filter change as part of a major service, which would consist of:-

all filters
points
condenser
plug leads
battery

etc.

My main question is, what oil should I use? Can I use the STP treatment and still expect the oil to lubricate the engine for 120 odd miles? Or should I have an oil change done at one of the quick fit places and then change again when I get home? What oil should I use as the normal charge of oil. Mobil 1 is going to be over kill but then I have alway been a believer in using the best you can for an engine. The problem with this one is its so old I don't have a clue.

Help

Thanks in advance

This brings to mind a story I heard a good few years ago about an ex-work colleague. He had obtained a mk1 or mk2 Escort and decided to bung in a diesel spec oil(more detergent),the idea being to to clean out the engine. Apparently, as it turned out, this was a bad move as once 'cleaned out', it started rattling like a good'un. It was reckoned that the years of carbon build-up etc had helped mask the wear of the internal components. Although I'm sure this would never happen with VW engineering!

how do you tell the difference between a low pressure turbo and a normal turbo on a 1994 astra 1.7 TD intercooler? Read more

Kev,

From memory it's on the left hand side of the radiator about four inches wide. Have a look at the hoses connecting up at the left hand end of the radiator. The cold(er) coolant hose comes off the bottom and can be traced up to the back of the engine passing over the top of the clutch. The intercooler pipes run from the top and bottom of the intercooler.

I have a 1999 VW Passat with full monty locking. Somehow I have locked the rear doors and cannot open even with the child lock button on the drivers door. The book states that the garage can lock but does not say how to unlock. Can anyone help ? Read more

I'm not sure if you mean that you can not unlock the doors or can not open them.
I've got a 2001 Passat.
Even when locked, pulling a door handle from the inside once will make the locking button pop up, the door will be unlocked. Release the handle and pull again , the door will open.If not there is indeed a problem.
Once the doors are open, check that the child-proof locks are not set.
If the situation recurs I suggest that you try the spare key fob and or unlocking the doors manually a few times using the key in the lock.
One of my rear doors would not lock /unlock remotely after 2 days of ownership - a wiring loom had pulled apart. It still operated via the manual method above. >> I have a 1999 VW Passat with full monty locking. Somehow

Dear all,

Hope you all had a great Christmas. There is a running problem with my engine. When starting from cold, it starts straight away with no throttle but would cut-off straight away. I have to blip the throttle to keep it running for a few seconds then it idles at 1200rpm. I have changed all the plugs and leads but no improvement (I did not think it would improve as it did not misfire but I thought I would give it a try anyway).

No engine light but could it be ECU problems or anything else?

Thanks,

12k or about to spend on one of the above. I prefer a manual but would obviously have to go auto for some of above. I am tempted by the 9-5 aero, not so keen on the Merc & BMW bad/smug image. Would the Jag be too expensive compared with the rest. What does anybody think. Read more

Buy whichever one you fancy the most. I once was shopping for a particular car, but couldn't find a "good 'un" at the right price so bought something else.

I was never happy with the car, or myself for buying it, and ended up selling it at knockdown price just to "get rid", so that I could buy the car I intended buying in the first place.

Hi

Does anyone know if an import eg VW has 1 or 2 years full
warranty from UK main dealers. I get conflicting advice from some dealers

"Expect your local VW dealer to be pretty unhelpful though."

Nearly all my cars have been imports and I have never encountered a problem with VW/Audi/Mercedes/Toyota/Nissan dealers and the warranty; although there have only been minor problems. VW even replaced the thermostat on a Golf FOC some months after the warranty had expired as a goodwill gesture.
