how do you tell the difference between a low pressure turbo and a normal turbo on a 1994 astra 1.7 TD intercooler?
|
fluffyman, The L.P.T.was not availble untill August 1995,it has the glow plugs and injectors at the front of the engine, the Isuzu turbo has them at the back (japanese engines rotate in the opposite direction to european engines)H.T.H. tonyh

The LPT wasn't fitted with an intercooler either, IIRC.

Dave The LPT does have an intercooler,I have an LPT Astra regards tonyh

I also have an LPT astra (1997 P) and was under the impression that there was no intercooler - where is it? It's not marked on the Haynes engine checkpoints photo - is it underneath somewhere?

Kev,
From memory it's on the left hand side of the radiator about four inches wide. Have a look at the hoses connecting up at the left hand end of the radiator. The cold(er) coolant hose comes off the bottom and can be traced up to the back of the engine passing over the top of the clutch. The intercooler pipes run from the top and bottom of the intercooler.

The LPT (GM 1699 cc 1.7DTL, 68hp) engine has 'DIESEL' written on the cam cover in white letters, whilst the Isuzu diesel engine (1686cc, 82hp) has 'TURBO' written on the top of the engine in red letters. The 1.7dtl LPT engine came out in August 1994 (M reg onwards).

Richard according to CBCB the LPT was introduced at the same time as the V grille,in 1995 regards tonyh

Yep, father-in-law had M-reg then P-reg Astra LPTs, I'm sure it didn't have a whacking great intercooler in the same way as my old Cav 1.7TD did.

Tony, you may be right, but I thought the V grill was late 1994? My parents have a M reg (registered February 1995) Astra estate 1.7d from new and is fitted with the 1.7dtl unit (LPT) and has the 'V' grill. I had until recently a 'L' reg Astra estate with the GM 1.7dr normally aspirated engine - great engine, seems bulletproof! It's still in the family, never let a good car go!
