The ride in my 96 VSX estate is poor. It's hard and harsh in almost all conditions.
I've replaced all the main suspension spheres including the hydractive extras, replaced LHM and put hydraflush in for 2000 miles.
It's still crap. I think the accumulator sphere is due for replacement but would that affect the ride at all?
It's at it's worst when pitched side to side it almost bounces along country lanes, most unpredictable.
AFAIK the hydractive II system is working properly (it wasn't but one of the electrovalves was replaced.)

Glad it was something simple in the end. Would suggest you consider replacing the cap & arm asap though - must be well past their best by now?
Bump starts, by pushing or by running downhill, are not recommended for modern cars. Why is this? They used to be my winter standby. Read more

I sent in the following last year ..........

I wrote to the transport minister about this last year - I nearly went into the back of someone on a wet dark M1 'cos I didn't notice brake lights - a car should NOT have TWO rear foglights close to brake lights - I think it should be illegal. Sensible manufacturers only fit one, presumably for this reason.
........have we made any progress? I saw a newish car - I think a Rover [why do they scowl at the front and have chrome-edged yellow Chinese woks on the back?] with two very bright fog lights next to the brake lights, inappropriately on in light drizzle, just asking for a rear end shunt.
Is it worth a reminder in HJ's newspaper column on proper use of these? In Germany it seems all the best cars sensibly have just one. Read more
I have also observed that rear foglights used in non foggy conditions can sometimes obscure, or at best reduce the visibility of the flashing indicator. Highly dangerous.
Has anyone encountered this problem before or has any advice to offer? Up until recently my street was fairly quiet. However, recently kids have started congregating and at least one night a week you get a group of teenagers kicking a football around. Normally I wouldn't mind, but this lot don't care whether the ball hits cars, doors, windows etc. At first I politely pointed out there was a football field just around the corner and we'd prefer them not to cause damage on our street. They did move for a bit but gradually came back, and I noticed a few marks and dents on the car that appeared to have come from football impacts, so I asked them again to move. They were back again tonight, blatantly kicking the ball off cars. I asked them to move and was rewarded with a threat to start hitting my car with their skateboards instead.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to stop this damage? My new car hasn't currently got any dents, but the old Tipo had quite a few by the time I pensioned it off from footballs and whatnot. I've contacted the local council but they don't seem very bothered about doing anything. I suspect it's getting to the point where if I say anything else to these kids they are going to start damaging my car on purpose, so where do I stand?
Any advice appreciated! Read more
Steve,
Have you tried "Safe Cut" (by Turtle Wax I think) It says it's for use on metallic paint and in my experience works well without seeming to damage the surface (though I suppose it has to in order to work) Does seem a lot less abrasive than T cut and certainly not as bad as Cif (what an awful name) which seems very "scratchy" to me
Hi all
Its that time of year when my fully comp policy is up for renewal and I have had a few quotes drop through the door, one of
which caught my eye because they printed on the quote a sliding scale of charges if I went over the "estimated mileage" that I would quote to them at the beginning of the policy year.
Is this standard practice? I do understand that obviously the more time you are on the road the more of a risk you present but I haven't seen any company tell me they will add up to £500 to my excess if I went say 5000 miles over the estimated mileage!
I have now upped this with my present insurers to reflect a more accurate figure.
Thanks Read more
Asked for an insurance quote, and was offered a policy which covered me up to 20,000 miles per annum, cost £420.
I said that was no good, as I cover more like 30 - 40,000 per year.
Insurer said, "Ah, well, we will have to put you on an unlimted mileage policy: Cost £390".
And the logic in that is......?
THREAD IS NOW LOCKED - YOU NEED TO FIND VOLUME 5
In this thread you may ask any question for which you need help, advice, suggestions or whatever.
It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be.
No politics
No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming
No arguments or slanging matches
Nothing which I think is not following the spirit of the thread.
I will delete any of the above. If the thread becomes difficult to maintain I will simply remove it.
However, as has been said a couple of times, there is a wealth of knowledge in here, much of which is not motoring related, but most of which is useful.
This is Volume 4. Volume 3 will not be deleted.

My brother in law bought one of these on contract hire about 6 months ago. He's not very mechanically minded. On Saturday while returning from Scotland, he commented that whenever he hit a patch of water, the car "felt like it was on skates". My first thought (before I knew the age of the car)was worn tyres and aquaplaning. However, I told him to contact the dealer ASAP.
The Service Manager's reply (yesterday) was "Funny you should mention that. Another customer's just told me of the same problem." The upshot was that the SM was going to speak to Renault about it. Something was mentioned about possible problems with the 4WD.
Haven't heard any more yet, but I was wondering if any Backroomers (or HJ) had heard of anything similar? Read more
Thanks Conductor, I was not aware of this. Just after I read your message, B-I-L phoned to say he'd discovered a switch under the dash which was to activate/de-activate the stability control programme. He's switched it on, but isn't yet convinced it's working. The appaling thing is that the Renault dealer's service manager appeared to be unaware of its existence.
Just had my oil and filter changed at national tyres. The t*** who did it overfilled it by 1/2 cm on the dipstick!
I then just thought it had spilled out somewhere over the engine. On closer inspection it seems oil has managed to get up into the air filter. I have cleaned all the s*** out of the airbox and got the prat who did the oil to make the oil level right plus 10 quid back for cleaning.
i was told to check that breather pipes for blockages so they are now clear i think, i am unsure if they were blocked before but there was some s*** in them.
My local garage guy said that should clear it up.
Is the oiloverfilling related to the oil in the airbox?
If not what would cause it?
if it makes any difference the cars done 116k and K reg
Also should the oil filler be blowing or sucking if the cap is removed with the engine running? Read more
that whats happened to me, oil draining out of the filter drain hole onto the manifold. Was only smoking though wasnt enough oil to catch fire i dont think thank god
Do all UK insurance polcies cover the very basic insurance Third party only for driving in the EU?
I have looked on various sites on the net and many state that all uk insurance policies must have TPO cover in the EU.
www.rightquote-car-insurance.co.uk/driving_abroad....l being 1.
But my insurers are saying im not covered. I am 18, so that meets the minimum age requirements of france etc driving licence wise so i now only require the insurance right?
According to my friend who knows about insurance, there should be automatic minimum EU cover as this is provided by law on all policies unless otherwise stated?

Surely folks the only answer is ----read your policy
My Saga policy gives me unlimited use in the EU ,fully comp, no Green card ,no need to tell them.
Outside EU cover is minimum required by the country I`m in,Green card needed and I must tell them.

Great, thanks for that. Sorry about the multiple postings, not really sure what happened there.
Probably got impatient and kept hitting 'Post'
