Spick

I have got a Peugoet 306 1.9 D Turbo and i was wondering if getting some cleaner for it (like Redex or similar) would actually make some difference,

Anyone seen any improvement from these products, if so what brand and how much was it?

Thanx in advance

Agree about noise, and had bought soundproofing material for engine compartment. However since adding Millers at recommended rates I find engine quite tolerable so not noise proofed. Advantage of diesel sound is that people in road react quickly particularly when they turn and see red ex-PO van bearing down!

A big thanks to all who responded to my earlier post ref excessive wheel play problem on a golf MK 2, pointing out that tyres were the first place to look. Decided to think clever and change front to back one at a time, beginners luck, first change solved the problem entirely, with no loss of ride quality . Well done lads, and thanks.

Thumbs down to the VW specialist and other readers who diagnosed all kinds of mechanical joint wear and expensive remidies

Three nice cars, all subtly different: Seat Leon 1.8T, Alfa 156 2.5, or Toyota Celica? All on an X plate, Alfa and Leon about the same price at £10k, Celica about £12k. Which one would you go for, assuming that all would do the basics (get around, quickly, with enough space) equally well?

Oh and torque is good, which probably rules the Celica out, although I've not driven any of these, so I'm willing to be proved wrong. Failing that, should my mate just go down the riceboy route and get himself a 2.0 (non turbo) Impreza?

HJ's opinions would be particularly appreciated. Read more

This is what we have to endure...
From the Johannesburg Sunday Times:
A bus with bald tyres, no brakes, no licence disc, a twisted chassis and a pick-up's numberplates passed through a traffic control centre and several roving roadblocks on a 1 150km trip across South Africa. It dodged numerous highway patrols.
On Friday, the driver of the bus, Mxolisi Malusi, 46, of Butterworth, admitted he was not licensed to drive the bus as his permit had expired.
Inspector Nzwanele Mjali, the assistant director of traffic control in Queenstown, said the bus was a " deathtrap", with exposed wires on the dashboard and a dead bolt on the passenger door that could only be opened from the outside.
The chassis was so mangled that it appeared as if the vehicle was travelling "sideways".
Meanwhile, a Zimbabwe-registered bus was impounded and its driver fined in Johannesburg on Wednesday because it was overloaded and had no front brakes. Its worn-out steering mechanism was held together with wire.

How much variation is normal at idle? My Yaris usually idles at 1500rpm or so when cold, but drops to what seems to be little over 600 when hot. It actually sounds rather rough when hot, but I assume this is because it's running as slow as practical. The only thing is, sometimes, but not often, it idles a bit faster when warm - up to about 1200. (This is taking a guess based on the tacho which has a very low resolution)

I sometimes find this a bit of a problem, as it's much harder to catch it on the bite when the engine is warm - I either end up revving it too much, or practically stalling it as on a short journey you get used to it idling high at first, then forget it gets slower once the engine has warmed up... No. It's a Yaris GLS. No difference in electrical load between cold and warm either.

I have a 98 passat and have recently begun to hear noises from the front suspension. I am aware this is a common problem with the front wishbones. Can anyone advise me further? Has anyone got anything out of VW seen as this is obviously a design fault?
Anything welcomed including cash donations! Read more

I got unfortunate last week - my wife wrote my car off - she's OK though :-).

Looks like I'll be having a conversation with Direct Line on Monday to agree a value - I'm looking for some pointers and help, as I've not been in this position before and don't want to feel (or get) ripped off!

If anyone could help answer these questions I'd be much obliged:

1) will I get offered trade value only?
2) will I be able to negotiate this (part way?) to the cost to replace?
3) if I'm really not happy with the offer, where can I take it further?

4) The car is (was) a Nissan Primera 1999/V 47,00 miles 1600 Si, grey metallic, all standard fittings, fsh, very nice condition (before the crash!) - what can I expect to be offered and what should I be really looking at as a replacement value, and what do folks think I'm likely to get?

I know it's a lot of questions, and any answers I get will be much appreciated!

Seasons greetings to one and all,
Hazychris

Thanks HonestJohn!

Any idea why prices dipped, or might rise??

Actually my Primera was a 1.6 Si, the last of the (current - 2) generation, just before it was replaced by the previous version to todays car - any views on dealer prices (I have a few, but the more sources I get, the better my case is :-) ?

Just FWIW, I'd say that Primera's at this sort of price levels are absolute bargains... the cars drive really well, will never get nicked coz they're not exciting enough and the security is good, and they're reliable. Shame it attracts a taxi moniker which puts so many people off.

Cheers

After being on reasonably loud for some time, the volume on my Phillips 660 dies down and cannot be increased. If I turn if off for a few minutes then back on it's fine. So I have a heat-related problem.

Is it likely to be something I can easily fix? Read more

Good idea, although I think the unit must be duff. I have the same model Omega as Smokie and have no problems with it - fingers crossed .......

Has anybody had a problem with Citroen Peugeot HDI 90 engines stalling easily? The car has been back to the dealer whose diagnostics found nothing wrong. They tightened the turbo pipe. (2002 Picasso HDI, 2 months old)

Do HDI engines repond differently to different brands of diesel?

Thanks in advance
