On my Rover 218 (1994, L reg), I treated the bumpers with "Mer" in recent years but they are now all terrible faded blotchy mess. They clean up with some toluene nasty chemicals but this is very slow, and probably dangerous!
What can I use to bring them back to good condition and what should I then use to retain this condition. Any help would be appreciated and tried out! Thanks. Read more
Caught an item on the radio to-day where Red Ken got a taxi from the Labour Party Conference (I think, didn't get it all) back to London at a cost of £240, the tab to be picked up by London's taxpayers. Seems he couldn't use public transport as he was in a hurry to attend "Some Important Meetings".
That's all right then.

On a recent programme regarding Tony Banks and his forthcoming challenge to become Mayor it repeatedly described him as once being Ken's closest friend...
Why did he appear to flinch when this was said?, and not appear to be too enthusiastic with this label.
After all you can still be mate's.......
Can anyone offer their perspective on this? A car reversed into my son’s, doing about £600-worth of damage. There were only the two cars in the car park at the time, and seconds after the crunch was heard my son’s colleague saw the other car driving away from my son’s rear bumper (the alarm was going off and the boot had popped open) and out of the car park. They took his number and reported the incident to the Police (he’d been drinking).
Because my son's colleague didn’t see the actual moment of impact the Police say there would be little point in taking this further(though they are following up the fact he didn’t respond to the two notices they sent him following the incident, and the fact he failed to report it). I’m assuming also then that there’s no point in pursuing it through the uninsured losses company that our insurance company contacted either – assuming the car is insured (we don’t even know that yet – the Police are taking some time to follow the matter up). As long as the other car’s insured, its insurers have to pay in an open and shut case, don’t they? (I know that’s unfair if your car’s been stolen and then involved in an accident.)
What I want to know is, surely in these the circumstances the “balance of probability” is that he did commit the offence? And wouldn’t that therefore make it worth a try through the uninsured losses company at least – obviously my son doesn’t want to do anything that will result in him having to make any kind of a claim that will affect his own insurance, having been squeezed till his pips squeak for the premium in the first place.
My son is rather endearingly waiting for justice to be done; on the other hand I’ve a horrible feeling that this little incident is going to cost, at the very least, the £600 to pay for the repair ourselves. Any comments or advice?
TIA
Carole

To be honest I wouldn't worry too hard about the insurance with this, as long as he gets his excess back then he has not accepted any blame. Be careful though, if the other insurers don't give him the excess back IN FULL then it is considered that he has accepted some liability, I can't remember where I read it, but a bloke got his excess back except £10, the insurance companies then said that meant he had accepted some responsibility for the accident and put his premium up!
Unfortunately as he's told them already, there's no way he can deny it happened...

I have a T reg Peugeot 306 LX auto which has an autoadaptive gearbox (ie. normal auto plus buttons for sport and snow modes).
There is an intermittent fault where both sport and snow indicator lights start flashing and the unit changes gear, but not correctly. Pressing the sport/snow buttons does not help. Stopping, putting in PARK, switching off and restarting cures the fault. Anyone got any advice. Read more
Another customer, who is currently struggling wiht his computer, has asked that I post his e-mail address here since he is having a similar problem and would like to discuss.

Mark.
Just seen on TV news, at launch of Durham £2 charge to drive near the cathedral.
Council spokesman said the charge is not a poke at motorists, it's to make the roads SAFER.
Now, how does that work?
Congested roads = crawling traffic.
Traffic decimated by con charge = little traffic = faster traffic.
So that's safer, then?
I'm easily confused..........................
Interesting to see the lady motorist who said she'd rather go to jail than pay the tax. Read more
Having tried to drive in London, anyone who wants to needs their head examined imo. So if they must drive they should be charged.. BUT the revenues should be used to improve non car transport eg the tube. Oops sorry Mr L and the Government cannot agree on that and NOTHING will be done for years and years.
(They say people get the politicans they elect and deserve:-)
If Londoners really cared, surely political pressure would force a change to the transport systems. Since nothing has been done for years, I assume London motorists don't really care. Perhaps congestion charging might make them.. I will not hold my breath.
Or perhaps the problem is that many of those who drive in London don't really care because they live elsewhere?
Judging by the filth in London and the congestion, not a city I would wish to live, drive or work in...

Pressure in N/S/R tyre has been going down 3-4lbs per week.
Independent tyre depot identified poor seating of tyre on rim as the cause and offered to clean the rim, re-fit and re-balance.
I had to stop one mile from depot and to my surprise noticed that there was no 'balance weight' on the rim.
Is it possible that the balance was so good that no weight was necessary or that it fell off in one mile (!) or have I been cheated?

Thank-you Richard (and John) for your help. I will do what you suggest.
Apologies if this has cropped up before.
In the USA I assume that the brand Infiniti is to Nissan, what Lexus is to Toyota in the UK, yes?
If so, are there Nissan equivalents available in the UK or are they all completely different models? Read more

Anybody had problems with a Ford Puma? I have bigtime!
I own a 1.7 zetec engined Ford Puma in which I have covered 34000 miles since I bought the car new in March 2000. It came with the standard 1 year warranty. which has since been increased on this model to three years. I recently experienced a catastrophic engine failure (whilst cruising at 50mph in top gear) while I was on business several hundred miles from home. When The vehicle was AA recovered to my local Ford dealer they told me that it seemed to have suffered a broken con-rod or big-end bolt as there were two holes in the engine block.
Result a very big bill for a new "dressed engine" (It comes with all the ancilliaries like starter and alternator whether you need them or not) and a very p****d off ex-Ford owner. Read more

Thanks.
I have recently experienced the dreaded "Cambelt Failure" on my 1.6 LS Ecotec Vectra, at 38,000 miles after the previous replacement by a Vauxhall Dealer.
I have tried to claim a warranty repair due to the fact that the "Official" replacement is 40,000 miles from Vauxhall, but they have rejected the claim, saying that the item is only guaranteed for 1 Year. The recommendation of 40,000 miles is not backed up by a time limit from Vauxhall, so i feel i have a good case.
The car has Full Vauxhall Service History from new, and repairs are currently at £ 1300.
I will take the matter further, but before i start this line of action, i wonder if anyone else has had, or is going through the same thing with Vauxhall.
Any comments / advice would be appreciated.

If my '96 Vectra was anything to go by, the recall didn't automatically result in the belt tensioners being replaced. It was an inspection of the tensioner roller condition, and if they were OK they were left on the car. My dealer automatically replaced tensioners with a cambelt change, but as we know they don't all do this.

I think it may be Simoniz who do a back to black can which is like a silicone spray, but it also says it works on faded colour co-ordinated bumpers though...
