I've just remembered something I forgot to post when it happened. Coming through the Dartford tunnel earlier this year I spotted minimum speed limit (10mph I think) signs - you know, the round blue ones with white numbers on. So rare are these that I'm sure I've never seen one before, and the guy driving didn't even know what they meant. Has anyone out there spotted any more of these? I had begun to think they didn't exist at all.

Yes, I've had a lovely holiday, thanks. Did about 1400 miles, half of them towing the caravan, and the G/Cherokee turned in an average 20 mpg. Diesel at between 74 and 90 Eurocents (50p-60p)a litre supermarket/motorway prices. Weather in the Loire valley scorching, wine and cheese as wonderful as ever. Saw one traffic cop all the while, flashes of approaching drivers gave advance warning. It does seem to be the season for French roadbuilders to close roads and signpost the first half of the diversion only but that adds to the fun! Even towed around the east circular of Paris (La Francilienne) and it wasn't as daunting as I'd feared - much easier than the M25 on a busy day. Only a bit hairy around CDG airport.
At the end, back to Dover and miles of the M20 contraflowed with SPECS cameras enforcing the 50 limit (thanks, Geodesy!).
So, with property a quarter of the price of Surrey, what am I doing here? I'm thinking very hard on that one.
Sorry to ramble on but you know how it is after a holiday.....
:o)

Or more commonly an express train....
Hi All,
I've recently aquired a 55k Puma 1.7VCT for my wife. It's a 1998 vintage and seems fine. About 4 weeks ago it had a Ford Dealer Full 60,000 service and seemed OK. Did about 250 miles at the weekend, and still fine. My wife filled it up at Safeway on Tuesday, and now reports the car "bunny-hops" (her words) sometimes when setting off (eg from a roundabout) or if cruising (eg, 30mph in fourth gear). Putting you foot down makes it go away, or dipping the clutch and revving the engine. Doesn't seem to happen under acceleration and when I drove it last night I could not replicate the problem. She says it's still doing it today.
So, I don't think it's the clutch (I set off on a hill in second with no slipping) I don't think it's the engine because it accelerates fine. I'm I looking at bad batch of unleaded? What do you think?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
cheers

Hi All
Just to close out on this one.
We have now run down that tank of supermarket unleaded and I filled up on Friday with Shell Optimax Super Unleaded. Towards the back end of last week the symptoms seemed to disappear and the car started behaving normally again. Used up the Shell yesterday on a long run (200 miles) again without a reoccurance.
So it looks like there was some contaminant in the supermarket fuel that was towards the bottom of the tank that got used up first? Anyhow, this car's only going to live on a diet of branded fuel from now on...
Thanks to those who contributed.
cheers

I've just got my hands on a Pug 406 GLX turbo diesel. I have a few issues with it, here we go:
1) The speedo, keeps jumping, swinging, gets stuck at 0 etc. Although sometimes it does read out correctly. Also it stops reading the mileage, so i don't know what my mpg is like!
2) The Oil level gauge. On starup it goes right up to the top and then down again, then up then down. It then comes to rest at off. Is this what is should be doing?
3) Sometimes the rev don't display, and the display jusr flicks when i press buttons on the centre console. Also when you change gear the needle tends to drop rather than swoop.
4) The tape won't play tapes and swaps sides until it turns itself back onto the tuner.
5) The electronic climate control seems to have a off time as well. The Temp only goes down to 14 and also the fan speed can be a bit dodgy. Air con doesn't seem to work very well but I'm not fussed about that.
6) The rear screen element sometimes doesn't work.
7) When pulling away in lower gears it seems very slow and has trouble getting upto 35-45 mph. If you dont push the gas it seems to pick up faster. It's has new glow plugs and the clutch insn't slipping. Once your past 40mph it's a breeze and no problems pulling away. You put your foot down but not a lot seems to happen. The engine rev increase but not to the point where it sounds like the clutch is havnig an off day.
8) Oh and I'm not sure but i think the fan isn't cutting in.
Apart from that a very nice car.
Any ideas. I've seen the other posts about checking the earth's on the car which i'll do. What about the ECU?
Many Thanks In Advance

Aaaargh.............. !
Just been running some figures through as I'm planning to get an old banger for use as a second car, and need insurance to be as cheap as possible.
Now I always thought the primary consideration was insurance group. Seems I was wrong. Entering in an old-shape Nissan Micra 1.0 (group 4) results in an insurance premium of £400 or thereabouts. Entering in an old Vauxhall Astra 1.4 (also group 4) results in a quote of £550. A Citroen ZX 1.4 (same group) is over £600!
How are these figures worked out? Is it engine size? BHP? 0-60? Repair bills (and if so how come a Nova is slightly more expensive than a Micra when I'd have thought parts were dearer on the Micra)?
Can't work this one out!!! Read more
I wouldn't have thought 150 excess was a problem. Personally I'd up it to reduce the premium as isn't the perceived wisdom that it's not worth claiming for anything less than a grand due to loss of NCB and/or increased premium (for all policies if you have multiple cars/bikes).
Not sure about this one. At one stretch of the A14 at Ipswich east bound, there is a stretch of the road which produces a
pogo-ing effect on the bike so bad that it keeps my speed down to 70-ish. I can't remember it being so bad on my CBR600. Is it a suspension setup problem, or just the wheelbase 'in tune' with the undulations in the road? Read more
Sounds like a resonance problem.
Try softening the rear suspension a little and see if that helps.
This vehicle was new in February this year,so called new, makes you wonder whether it was standing in a field prior to delivery?

Dealer viewing this tomorrow, initially mentioned possible replacement. Will post the final outcome Monday next.
after the accident it looks like the ins co will be sending a cheque within the next few days. i'm crap at buying cars. what sort of discount on a published price should i be looking for - the obvious answer is as much as poss i know and appreciate that it is a"how long is a piece of string" question. but any advice will be welcomed. There are a few credit card companies who offer 0% for balance transfer and purchases - just seen one for 0% until June 2003. Use the card to buy the car and get the extra protection, pay no interest 'til June 2003 then use your own cash to clear the balance.

We are just considering a follow-up to Prudence Proton, now into third year (I suppose we'll get washers for him - bought before all the prices dropped, which I never thought to see).
In relation to these circumstances I note that HJ says good things of the Magentis, especially in relation to the price. And I fancy six pots.
I wonder if anybody has experience of one, and would care to offer any comment?

Its a shame you can't apply that rule for a Yank car imported into the UK - The Neon for instance...
The new XJ, see www.Jaguar.com looks even more like the XJs of 1969 to 1989.
Just the boxy 1986 to 1994 XJs that broke from this fine pattern?
A classic shape?
At it\'s launch, the XJ was voted the best saloon in the world.
certainly the new one {out next year} is the best looking saloon in the world. I see nothing from BMW or Merc that would be more worthy of the XJ\'s first tile?

Thanks DVD,
The quote "capable of attaining a speed of 25 mph on the level" is the one I'm thinking of.
The outfit Watcher refers to, IIRC, was a vintage showmans's set up with ancient and slow tractor unit towing a drawbar trailer (steam organ?") which itself was towing a close coupled second trailer.
The driver was correct and Lancs Police wrong in that there are dispensations for showman's vehicles, however they were right to stop him as he was damned dangerous at ~17/20mph on the M6 plus wavering about all over the place.
And as for allowing contractors to escort large loads? Might I suggest the following scenario.
Firstly too many drivers will ignore them as they probably wouldn't have the same rights to stop etc as old bill.
Then they would be given extra powers.
Then we'd see the overenthusiastic application of those powers in the name of profit. eg clamping operators. :-(
