Its time to change my 95 306 xrtd cam belt , last time I did this task the most awkward bit was getting cam belt top rear cover removed. The brake resevoir gets in the way, I ended up lifting the resevoir out of the way which of course dumped the fluid all over the bulkhead. Any suggestions? Read more

I do not consider myself a car trader but I change my vehicle quite often and every time find myself frustrated at the insurance companies inabilty to cope with a change of car. It always appears that it is an excuse for them to put my insurance up even if I am moving to a lower risk vehicle. I have considered getting myself a traders type policy just to save the hassle of insurance changers when I swop car, there must be people out there with some experiance of traders insurance?

What are the pitfalls and are the costs high, I would have two cars to insure, would I need to set myself a business up to enable this (No turnover!!-lol) or is there some other way around this issue.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I had a trade policy for a couple of years when I was a mobile mechanic, I used it to cover my car as well as the work van. When I went back to normal insurance (Churchill) they deducted two years from my NCB. It didn't amount to much in my case and wasn't worth arguing about, but it might be different for someone else.

I have a Vectra DI Nov'96 registered, but '97 model with a problem. It has 38K on it and just started to get the electronic management light on when doing 5 - 15 mph. I accelerate and it goes again. However I have also been getting power loss which felt like no turbo (couldn't acc in 4th or 5th) for 2 weeks, then it came back fully for a day, then 1/2 went (acc slowly in 4th & 5th) then went again. I took it into Vaux dealer where it indicated the MAF sensor was faulty, that was changed - no difference so old one went back. Its now erratic, I travel 50 miles to work, sometimes ok 1/2 way sometimes all the way, sometimes nothing!

Any clues appreciated.

The archive talks about power loss at 70mph, but mines at all speed, and computer just says MAF.

Cheers, Ant. Read more

your problem and all problems similar to this are due to the carbon from the recirculation of the exhaust gasses into the inlet manifold which in turn block not only the primary ports of the manifold but also the secondary ports which are opened via butterfly valves as you increas speed, leading to insufficient air intake.the problem with the light on the dash is very lightly due to the egr valve being held open from mass carbon deposits...the bad news is that if U only clean out the carbon from the manifold it is only a 12month fix but it returns the car to full power and better economy

Question estate best buy
tim c

Hi everyone from a new member.
I have to replace my ageing Alfa 164 due to high repair costs. I need a family estate car, and have approx £5000 to play with. Am considering a Laguna (not many around), Vectra (loads around and cheap) or 406 (seem relatively expensive). Would prefer under 50 000 miles because I'll be keeping it for many years. Is a Xantia worth considering? Do you have any opinions regarding the best buy?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not a fan of either......I think we have a misunderstanding here. Never mind.

Must close this subject now, I've promised Mark.

Just phoned the ticket hotline to clarify prices for this year's Network Q rally, from 14-17 November. It seems they no longer sell tickets at each individual stage, rather they sell "day passes" which entitle you to visit stages you weren't going to. Last year I went to Margam, which cost £15 a head, this year if I want to go I have to pay £30 for a Sunday Day Pass!
At the foot of the web page there's a note about single stage passes being available at £20 a stage, but as Margam is actually two stages (SS16 and SS17), being run twice, do I have to pay £40 now?? The girl at the call centre seemed v-e-r-y confused...

Get down to Le Mans next June for some bargain sportscar racing. Entry, which covers pre-qualifying in May and full race week in June, is only about £30 - and the event is one of the best spectacles in the world

I have a 2000 X Omega Elite Estate (with 17" wheels and ultra low profile Michelins as supplied new) The car tramlines more than I would expect, particualrly noticeable under braking. Also follows motorway ruts. I suspect the tyres - has anyone experience of this?

Now you mention it, Smokie, I remember that mine got better when I changed from Uniroyals to Goodyear F1s (much, much, much better tyres all round in fact). Putting in new shocks & bushes hasn't made any difference though (and the old ones were shot).

Given the fact that this site has been discovered by at least one already, what tips (clean, motoring related ones that is !) has the Back-Room got for all those Helpless Female Drivers out there ?

Can I start by suggesting that all HFD's study the relationship between the colour of petrol pump nozzles and what comes out of them :-)

Graham,

It would be rude not to reply when called!

All I can say is you still haven't enough of them if you can see out of the living room window.

My main "on the road" one is jogging along, I'm brush painting it as well as possible in the original green at present.....one panel at a time when work permits.

Yes the mind boggles but it looks well in keeping with the expectations for an old LR.
