When BCA run a closed auction, I know that it is closed to retailers of that brand and selected dealers.

What I can't get is how the seller gains from doing this, as they must be restricting the number of potential buyers and hence restricting the prices they receive.

I know I'm missing something here. Anyone know what it is? Read more

Its so the Franchised network has first pick of the well specced cars which are hard to find elsewhere IMO . All the unsold cars are then put into the general sales.
The reports i have read about Closed auctions always say the cars achieved above book this obviously reflects on the condition, specification and saleability of the cars on offer. (not your usual auction tat).

That could be a good point; the sexier it looks, the more likely it is to be pulled.

Mike Rutherford on Talk Sport (1053/ 1089am) is apparently going to be announcing the relaunch of a well known British marque in the form of a new 175mph supercar. His programme's on air now for all those interested to find out what it is. Read more

The last effort at an Invicta, apart from two sort of kit cars in the '80s, was the immediate post-war one which was too complicated and too dear, especially against Jaguar; it only lasted a few years.

Better luck this time?

Forum Network Q.
Toad, of Toad Hall.

For the past few years I've marshalled at the Network Q in Margam forest. I see the rally free in exchange for a bit of light work. It's good fun and we usually stop in Cardiff for a night out.

I got a letter this morning. I have to become a registered marshal and undergo training.

Are they completely mad? Naturally I'm not going to bother and I wonder how many others will.

Since the Network Q relies heavily on unpaid marshalls I think measures like this aimed at discouraging marshalls can only damage the rally.

Just another restriction on our activities driven by insurance/litigation issues. The same thing's happening in schools. My son with special needs can't go swimming anymore because the volunteers who take him and his classmates have been told they have to be accompanied by a qualified lifeguard !!!

How many people are going to volunteer for such things when it's becoming so difficult to do so ?
No end of good causes are being forced to cease or curtail their good works because of fear of litigation. I'm coming to the conclusion that this country is going to grind to a halt sooner rather than later !

I am a member of the RAC but the subscription seems a bit steep.

Which other similar breakdown/rescue services do members of this list use, and have they found them OK?

The AA are expensive for personal travel insurance, at least for annual cover.

Have a look at www.moneysupermarket.com/TravelInsurance for many companies offering much cheaper cover.

Gary, No such thing as a Range Rover Discovery, either a Range Rover or a Land Rover Discovery.
I bought an almost new (95 model) Land Rover Discovery, top of the range ES, TDI 300 engine. At 2 years and six months old I got rid of it because of the following: Tractor engine, Poor build quality, Corrosion and slug like performance.
I then bought a 96 Range Rover, 6 cylinder BMW engine good performance (chipped), much better comfort and more toys. The RR was also poor build quality, numerous things broke but I held on to it for 80000 miles.
I now drive a Citroen C3 HDI 16 valve, much more fun.

considering buying one of these from an import supermarket - HJ highlights a fairly low rating on customer survey for reliability. Any good or bad experiences out there ?

Question corsa 1.2 choke
needhelp

I have a corsa 1.2 8v and the fuel economy is raher bad only about 30 mpg. However The hot air feed from the exhaust manifold goes nowhere into the air box it only has the cold air feed. If I was to drill a hole into the airbox to take the hot air feed this would allow the engine to warm up quicker yes???? But would this cause me any problems when the engine has reached operating temp. The automatic choke stays on for a long time due to no warm air entering the engine and I assume this is causing bad fuel economy.......

needhelp

i have a journey of 15 miles to work every morning and on a full tank of fuel as in totally full I can get 330 miles to a tank before the petrol light comes on. I don't drive the car hard and most of the journey is dual carriageway. Only really drive at about the 50-60mph mark.

The weather is rather cold at the min and it can take the best part of 10mins or more before the temp hits 90. Its had a major service recently I did this myself so I know evrything else is fine. Thermostat seems to be a good idea though. I'll check it this weekend and get beck to you.

Thanks very much for your input

Question BMW 530D
Bathdave

I bought one of these a year ago , 18 months old personal import. The magazines all wax lyrical about the engine and rate it one of the best.

I have had recurring problems with rough tickover, lack of or inconsistent power through the range - also it is very slow on the take up if you try for a quick getaway before it goes - disconcerting if you are pulling out at a junction or roundabout!

It has been in on several occasions, had the injectors replaced once, and reset a couple of times, the turbo replaced - these make a short term improvement but the situation tends to revert - BMW dealer say that they can\'t find anything wrong when they test it, and like all intermittent things, tends to behave when it goes in !!

Overall it is not as smooth and quiet as I would expect and the power seems patchy.

Any similar experiences or ideas ? Read more

Think this problem is usually caused by a duff Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF).

Have a search here:

Why not tax dirty, stinky, 20 year old diesel double decker buses so much that its cheaper to run a car?

Then there will be no need for bus lanes, bus stops, bus stations {turn them into town centre car parks} and so room for a few million more cars on the roads, motorways and in town centres.

Then all the motoring taxes will be collected from millions of more people, so the individual's motoring taxes will fall, Gordon Brown will be happy, everyone's a winner?
