There are I think just 3 major net contributors to the EU pot and the economy of the largest (Germany) is far from healthy ! What effect do you think adding another 10 underdeveloped countries to the membership will have on the UK's contributions and the prospects of us ever having a decent transport infrastru cture ? I was sorry to read in todays Telegraph that the powers that be have decided to kill Mike Rutherford's column. Could it be presure has been brought to bear because of his non-pc pro- motorist views I wonder? I hope he springs up somewhere else where I can read his views. Read more

Could the Saturday Telegraph re-vamp be anything to do with the vastly improved Sunday Times Driving supplement. The Times has been rather pathetic for many months in motoring terms.

Early next year I'll be looking for a sports car. Budget will be £8K-£10K. The problem is that I'm 6 foot 4. I've tried the MGF, MR2, and MX5 and I haven't sit comfortably in any of them, even after adjusting the legroom and the rake. Usually my head hits the roof and I can't get my legs beneath the steering wheel. Have I failed to spot some sort of adjustment? What other sports cars should I consider? I'm not looking for a particularly high top speed, but I am looking for accelleration and manoeuverability. I currently drive a Proton which is nice but a tad sedate, though my last Proton saved my life, crumpling very nicely around me.

Tips on what to look for would also be appreciated. Read more

The Porsche 944 is very accomodating, quick and almost depreciation proof if you can find a good one. I guess the same applies to the 968.

Not sure if 10k gets you a BMW Z3 (perhaps it will after the Z4), but I couldn't get the seat far enough back and I'm over 6" but not 6"4'

Another option would be a Jag XJ40 - plenty of space (font anyway) and fast enough - there's more and more around the 10k mark now.

The carpet in my 1998 Fiat Brava is getting wet (up to a puddle!) in the drivers footwell.

Before I end up ripping the carpet out myself, is this a know problem? or does anyone have any suggestions of where to look to solve the problem?

Plus, you'd have to decide just how serious an accident warranted
being 'downgraded'. You could hardly ban someone from driving their car
for a minor car park bump!

Of course! If it were possible, then the amount of aggression/carelessness etc involved in said accident would have to be taken into account.
Maybe a major, fault accident would result in immediate downgrading, a
lesser fault accident would require a re-test to keep that level
of licence, and a minor bump would go on record for
say a year, collect more than one at a time and
you need to have a re-test. The shared car problem could
be solved by making people take the harder test from the
outset.

Sounds good to me.

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this. The car failed its MOT today due to two points, emissions & the steering wheel idler.

At idle speed the car is over-fuelling by a vast amount, yet on part and full throttle the car is running lean by an equally vast amount. The 2.5V6 has been Superchipped and has 3.0 hi lift cams fitted but mechanically nothing else has been changed. The car has previously passed with the superchip but has never been tested with the cams. What could cause this to happen?

The other item was the steering idler on the near side. How big a job is this to replace on the Omega?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Question £9K Camry
Daedalus

Another good bagging had to be a 102k mile 92K Toyota Camry 2.2 7-seater estate for £9,000. An easy £600 profit in that one for someone with a superbanger pitch.

Above quoted from HJs news today. HJ is this right a 92 Camry for 9K? Should it have been £900? Our 7 seat Mondewoe will only get £1500 on a very good day now and its only got 99K miles and is M reg.

I am aware that this subject has been covered before BUT:-

The southbound M42 has been closed all day at J4, with the expected chaos affecting thousands of motorists. According to news reports the body of a man was found on the motorway and police believe he had fallen from the bridge above the motorway.

Now I accept that it there could be several scenarios on how he 'fell' and the police have to investigate all circumstances. However there have been a number of instances in the past couple of years when motorways has been closed for what seems an inordinate length of time for police investigations. Closure of motorways for lengthy periods, for any manner of incidents and accidents, does seem to be a new practice by the police.

Wouldn't it be helpful if a police spokesman explained why it was necessary.

blowpipe

This has been well and truly covered before. 1)Plod doesn't keep resources tied up in one place longer than needed.2)Health and Safety issues now, quite rightly, are well to the fore and must be observed to minimise further needless carnage. 3) If your loved one's in bits over two/three carriageways, a thorough job, hopefully not rushed or fudged for expediency, is the least you can expect under the circumstances. Shame that people can't see further than their own inconvenience under such circumstances.

Question 306 Headlights
Adam McGee

Hi John, I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem I have with the electrics on my 306. I have an intermittent problem with the dipped beam on both headlights. The side lights both work, and full beam works but the second click on the stem does nothing. This problem will randomly appear after relatively long periods of working properly and will last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, but it is now becoming a problem with the nights drawing in. I have checked the connections to the bulbs and they seem OK, but I have no idea where to go from here. If anyone has any suggestions or has solved the same problem any info would be greatly appreciated. I have given it to a car electrical bloke to have a look at, he cleaned battery contacts and checked some connections and randomly cured the problem but didn't know how.
