Sometimes when I start my mondeo (petrol), mainly when the engine is still warmish, I have to 'catch it' by dabbing the accelerator to prevent it cutting out. The battery is nearly 3 years old and I do a fair number of shortish journeys. I checked the water levels in the battery and toped them up as they were low but not below the cells. I understand some people reccommend elective battery replacement every 3 years Read more
Looked at the deals of the week on HJ's home page and spotted this one. 1.0 3 door, 3 year warranty, etc for just £4,995 - brand new!
Might be just what we need to replace SWMBO's ageing Merc (second car). Called in my local Suzuki dealer this afternonn for a quick look at one. Whilst it's not going to win any style awards, it looks ok. Checked HJ's car-by-car section, again seems alright.
The car would be used for a 30 mile round trip to work each day, mainly on country roads, and local running around during the weekend.
Does anyone have any opinions on this car, preferably from ownership/ friends' experience etc. All info gratefully received.

Pat

Thanks KB and Rob.
Useful feedback. The lack of airbags is a bit of a worry, especially the way some of the nutters drive round here!
Depreciation is not a big issue. We would probabably keep it if for 3-4 years and then use it as a trade in for a replacement for the A4 which is currently our main car and would then be relegated to 2nd. That's the plan, anyway!
If I do take the plunge I'll let you know.
Many thanks again for the valuable advice/comments. HJ's site comes to the rescue yet again. I just wish (and my wife would agree) it wasn't so addictive!

HJ and Mark The Moderator with your indulgence.
This year North Yorkshire has suffered a massive increase in the death of Motor- cyclists using the scenic and popular roads of The Dales, North Yorkshire Moors and Coast roads. So far an unprecedented TWENTY bikers have been fatally injured in road accidents within the County.
North Yorkshire Police after consultation with other Road safety agencies are to mount "Operation Victory" this Bank Holiday weekend and others later when resources will be specifically directed towards rider behaviour and to rigorously enforce the rules of the road.
If any of you in the Forum plan to visit the County this weekend or know of any two wheeled friends intending to do so, please pass on this information and ask for some moderation in riding.
We love to see you come, better still that you leave in one piece upright and still on two wheels.

I love the idea of the roads being closed, but I like you know it will never happen. The best thing is that it was you who said it.

I am currently looking around to buy my next car. Would it be better to buy now as dealers will want to clear old stock before part ex's arrive with the coming plate change or wait a few weeks and try and pick up a part ex traded in for a new plate? Any advice welcome (I'm looking to spend 6 - 7k if that makes any difference). Read more
I would have thought New Year is an excellent time to buy?
Has anyone had the same problem I'm experiencing with a 1990(H) UK Toyota Celia GTi?
Under engine braking, and only when the car is hot, I hear a nasty metallic grating sound. Engine mounts have been checked and are OK.
Depressing the clutch makes the noise go away.
Is it likely to be gearbox / thrust bearings or something incredibly sinister?
The car has only done 64k miles.
Any suggestions would be appreciated before I just give up and sell it! Read more
Changing the gearbox oil, plus an additive solved the problem. Apparantly the stuff that came out was very badly burned, but no sign of swarf.
It's likely that the wrong oil was added when the car was last serviced.
I understand that my particular Celica, although having a manual gearbox, actually requires oil for an automatic!
I hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
I am hoping someone here will be able to help with my car woes. I am getting an intermittent problem with my N reg 1.6 15v escort - it will 'judder' when it is warm. When I say judder I mean it will constantly gain and lose power whilst I accelerate meaning I can't get up to speed. The error code shows 214 'CID Circuit failure', but I have changed most of the sensors and this code hasn't changed. I am desperate to get this problem fixed, if you have any advice I would be grateful. I have tried:
*New cat
*New Camshaft,Crankshaft,Coolant and Temperature sensors (New Lambda Sensor will be fitted the weekend).
I have heard this model may have sticky valve problems, but I don't know how this problem would manifest itself so I can't tell if it is the same problem. Read more
Sorry, forgot to mention have had new plugs, leads and coil!
Hi all Back-roomers. Given the increase in traffic in towns would it be a good idea to give pedestrians priority when crossing the road using existing pedestrian refuges.
I.e. when a pedestrian is standing at a refuge in the middle of the road should the traffic on the relevant carriageway be required to stop and allow him/her to cross ? Having got 2 small kids and living near a fairly busy road we're frequently 'stuck' in the middle of the road whilst cars, buses, lorries etc. whizz past - even in the rain ! What do you think ? to Read more

Tend to agree.
Unfortunately pedestrians don't have to pass a test requiring a knowledge of the Highway Code, perhaps road safety should be made part of the National Curriculum. At least then we would have a generation growing up realising that all road users have a responsibility to each other and not just that all motorists have horns growing out of their heads!
You are perfectly correct that all drivers should have learnt the Highway Code, sadly, many never read it again once they've passed their test believing that once they have passed they are fully qualified and have no need to learn anymore.
Has anyone ever seen any pedestrian comply with any of the above?
This is the only point I disagree on, I have; and probably so have you, it's just that so many don't comply that the ones who do get lost in the crowd!

As a general point the UK appears to have gone "loan crazy".
loans against the house, loans against the pension, loans to pay loans, loans to buy cars, etc. etc. All very worrying.
However, I heard one on the radio this morning about "Log Book Loans".
Apparantly, if you have a car without finance, you give them the log book, they lend you 40% of the value of the car, and you keep the car to drive around in.
And they emphasised "no credit checks".
Presumably they take the car if you don't pay.
I didn't catch what the interest rates or repayment terms were like.
However, surely this is a daft idea and is almost irresponsible in that it may lead people with bad credit histories, or insufficient dosh to pay the loans, into further credit issues. No doubt resulting in them losing 100% of their car to service the 40% they borrowed.
Or am I missing something and its really a very good idea ?? Read more
Wow - that's an old thread. I'd have just deleted

My V70 D5 (diesel) Volvo has recently developed a problem. When starting from cold in the mornings the computer displays a brief message "No oil pressure stop engine" this dissapears after about a second. I have taken it to the dealer and they changed the oil pressure sensor. However on starting this morning the same message appears. I have called the dealer and they have booked the car infor further investigations in a week or so. They suspect a sticking non return valve which is allowing the oil to drain back into the sump overnight and they assure me there will be no long term damage. I'm not so easily convinced, what do the experts in the Backroom think?
Thanks in advance for any useful advice in advance.
