Noisy Celica - colin-e
Has anyone had the same problem I'm experiencing with a 1990(H) UK Toyota Celia GTi?

Under engine braking, and only when the car is hot, I hear a nasty metallic grating sound. Engine mounts have been checked and are OK.

Depressing the clutch makes the noise go away.

Is it likely to be gearbox / thrust bearings or something incredibly sinister?

The car has only done 64k miles.

Any suggestions would be appreciated before I just give up and sell it!

It sounds like a transmission problem.I would check your gearbox oil level first. If it is OK then drain the gear oil when hot and examine for excessive metallic particles in the oil.If there's significant debris in the oil then it looks like you'll need an exchange box.

Thanks David. It sounds so logical. To that end, its going in to the garage on Thursday. If it isolates the problem, then I owe you a drink!

Changing the gearbox oil, plus an additive solved the problem. Apparantly the stuff that came out was very badly burned, but no sign of swarf.

It's likely that the wrong oil was added when the car was last serviced.

I understand that my particular Celica, although having a manual gearbox, actually requires oil for an automatic!

I hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
