You think he would have learned...

"A Pietermaritzburg man - dubbed by the Road Traffic Inspectorate the "Silliest Driver of the Year" - appeared briefly in the Camperdown magistrate's court outside Pietermaritzburg on Monday.
Kennedy Msimang was not asked to plead on two counts of speeding and two of drunk driving.
Msimang was apparently trapped while driving a BMW cabriolet at 168 kilometres an hour in mid-December.
A week later, he was again trapped on the same stretch of road, this time apparently speeding at 179 kilometres an hour.
The unlucky Msimang was allegedly in another BMW bearing the same vehicle registration plate as the cabriolet.
Msimang's drivers licence has been suspended and he was released on bail.
He will re-appear in court on January 21. Read more

dear Honestjohn,

I own a G-plate Volvo 340 1.4 with 112000 miles on the clock. The engine seems generally sound but has recently started cutting out on decellerating: approaching junctions etc. This is worst after periods at high RPM. Once the car is restarted the problem generally clears for a few minutes before reoccurring. Any ideas at all?
Many thanks

My old 340 1.4, 3 door 'G' reg did 200K miles and returned around 40mpg.
However, it got alot of TLC with regular oil/filter changes at 6K periods. Regular tuning etc. I found the ignition system had to be kept clean at all times the plugs and leads did not like oil or water contamination, wipe down with a meths soaked rag. The distributor cap and rotor arm frequently needed the condensation removing. One problem from early days was similar to the one described. An AA man advised that it was a good idea to permanently secure (using a self tapping screw) the carb. air inlet thermostatic valve flap into the position that supplied only hot air from the manifold and yes the flimsy air supply pipe is very prone to failure. I found the car ran OK both in summer and winter. One other point, you might look at is the idle shut off solenoid on the carb. £35.00 from Volvo about £15.00 from the independents, this has a habit of failing intermittently.

I never came across the other faults but the carb was prone to loosening up and needed a tighten up every now and then. On other tip, soak the carb. and jets in Redex. Cleans things out.

Since replacing the wiper arms on my 94 Mondeo 24v, I've found that as soon as I exceed 90mph (i know, I know) with the wipers on, there's a terrible vibrating noise at the top of the cycle.

Any ideas anyone? Read more

In case I missed previous correspondence, can anyone tell me what alternative plastic "tents" are available for storing a car in during winter?
How good are they?
How do they dehumidify the air?
What cost and where from? Read more

I wish to thank all the contributors for offering advice on my old diesel Escort which was experiencing problems in starting(understatement)

My friend has now managed to get it going and its running okay. He says it was a combination of things, and that the problem may have emenated from my excess use of the throttle when originally trying to start it.

Anyway if any of you ever require any assistance or advice on antiques, jewellery, watches or clocks, do not hesitate to E-mail us, and we will be pleased to help. Read more

Reminds me of a rugby league supporter I once knew. Never missed the final at Wembley. But then announced he was going to give what should have been a strongly fought game between the two Hull teams a miss.

Why?

He was going to Hull for the weekend instead !

I would like to buy an old Lexus LS400. What terrifies me is catalytic converters. I have never owned a car that had one and don't want to. I think that all Lexus's had them from new as standard even before the legislation that made them compulsory.

Here are the questions:

1) Were Lexus's ever produced without Cats. If so to what date?

2) If they were not would it be legal to remove the Cat from a pre-legislation registered car and replace it with a non-Cat exhaust.

3) If 2) is possible would I get such an exhaust for a Lexus or woud it need to be specially made?

Advice appreciated.

Stuart. Read more

Try the internet for companies that make Cat's for Lexus much cheaper that OEM, I would not run it without the Cat as you will effect the Oxygen sensor's and subsequently the ECM.

The legendary lack of will-power in this family regarding things automotive with very large engines threatens another assault on the biscuit tin under the mattress in the form of a stable-mate for the Growlette's red '66 Mustang rag-top owned these last 11 years. This time a 3 owner '66 V-8 hardtop, current owner a Philippine Airlines 747 flight engineer 14 years, 90% original, all the VIN specs check out against the Owners Club decode tables, even the monster cast-iron aircon compressor atop the engine works (most have been replaced long ago with Jap aftermarket ones). Some welding needed on the notorious rear frame rails, and more needed to the trunk floor, as is common. Easy job. The 205-15 tires are too bid and scrape the inside of the fenders on sharp turns, so we need new boots, the ammeter and one horn don't work, all the fluids are clean and the engine bay is cared for and very tidy. Some of the chrome a bit faded but easily replateable here. Boosted front drums a bit grabby but stop very well , I think I'd do the DIY disc conversion anyway it's just an afternoon task, 2 year old repaint in the original Wimbledon white, new headlining just done. Asking just short of 5k pounds equiv. The combination of hot metal and vinyl smells mingled with unburnt gas through that big old carb and the unmistakeable exhaust note.....Beatles on the 4-track, close your eyes and it's 1966 again.

I think I'm in love. But I don't have any more carport space...... Read more

From yesterday's Sunday Times

THE British have enjoyed a leap in IQ unmatched by anybody else in the developed world over the past 60 years, a study has revealed.
James Flynn, a professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand and a leading authority on intelligence quotient, says he has found an ?exceptional and unappreciated? rise.

Last year the professor announced a worldwide increase in IQ after demonstrating that we are generally brighter than our parents, but are outwitted by our children. He suggested that the complexities of modern life were stimulating the brain.

Now a comparison of data from thousands of tests in universities and the military in 20 countries has shown that this so-called Flynn Effect is greatest in Britain, with a 27-point increase in average IQ since the second world war.

While differences in the way countries measure IQ make it impossible to compile a league table of intelligence, America?s average score has risen by just 24 points since 1918.

Much of the British advantage comes from speaking English, the standard tool of communication in commerce and culture.

The British also benefit from IQ-boosters such as lower truancy and better nutrition than in America.
--------------

Ehere this wretched professor must have been looking for comparisons I don't know. Since he speaks from NZ, possibly he has people confused with sheep.

Absolutely nothing I experience on my occasional trips to UK support these assertions, from airline checkin attendants through car rental agents and oh-mi-god those call centers. And definitely not many of the drivers I encounter. These columns' contents support the contention that idiocy remains a thriving human condition. Read more
