I drive my own W reg 1.8 Avensis - cash for car company driver - and have had it dealer serviced according to the book since I bought it from a car supermarket. This was primarily for warranty purposes which expire soon at 60K, a cambelt change is due at 63K for which I'll send it to the dealer also. A major service is due at 27K intervals but intermediate services seem to be little more than a few visual checks and an oil change for £100ish. I intend to do the intermediate services myself after the cambelt change and dealer service at the 27K interval I drive about 40k a year so it will still receive good attention really.
I just wondered if anybody has any thoughts on this procedure, I intend to drive it for at least another 2 years when it will have the best part of 150K on the clock so resale with dealer history may not be that relevant.
Any comments - thanks. Read more

The SVT Mustangs will not wallow but the normal ones will "the sport suspension' optioned ones slightly less so... (The SVT version of a ford is the ford version of an AMG M-Benz... and they can actualy be quite nice driving autos)
My halogen bulbs (9006s) are very bad and not powerful enough (for my eyesight!) Short of installing xenons is there an alternative bulb on the market that will improve road visability. I know that there are a lot of bulbs that say that they look like xenon (ie are blue) but are these just cosmetic changes? I know that PIAA make a bulb that costs about £90 the pair but do not want to spend this if they do not work. Can anyone help? Read more
I have just fitted a pair to my 1987 9000i and can't see any improvement worth talking about - the light is whiter but, somehow, it doesn't seem to light the road any better. Have you done anything else to improve them? What year is it? There was another comment re earthing. Have you tried that as well? I have tried earthing mine directly bac to the battery negative with no improvement. Although the spread and pattern is excellent the actual illumination is poor.
Just nipped home for lunch in my Audi Coupe. Slowed down to turn into my drive, and... what's that whining noise? The previously silent fuel pump now sounds like someone has left a cordless power drill running in the boot.
Any suggestions? I suspect this may be expensive. I left the car at home and came back in the Land Rover, as it is only 3 miles to work, so the AA wouldn't tow me home if the pump died on the way. Read more
Just to confuse matters further - I left the car at home yesterday, but brought it in to work this morning, and the fuel pump is now silent.... I'll take a look at the lift pump this weekend - could just be a bad connection. It might even be the same terminal block as the heated rear window, which has also become intermittent.
Martin - the gearing on the 20V is indeed very odd. I find first gear much too tall, which is a pain in city traffic, and the 2nd/3rd gaps is a pain as well. Unless you drive with one eye on the rev counter, you end up being outdragged by VW Polos. But I can live with this for the pleasure of one of the finest mass-produced petrol engines ever made.
Does anyone know why, when a suspected criminal crashes his car whilst being followed by police, the matter is referred to the Police Complaints Authority?
This immediately suggests that the police have done something wrong, but what are they to do? Should they let a suspect escape because he chooses to drive at high speed?
Should not these cases be referred to a section with a different title, ?Investigations Unit? or whatever, but surely not complaints.
Whilst I have no time whatsoever for police who hide behind bushes trying to trap motorists who may be breaking a poorly set limit in safe circumstances with no danger to anyone, surely it impedes police chasing real criminals when they have in the back of their minds that they may lose their job for trying too hard to protect society from violent thugs. Is there a piack up on the market that has seats, 2 or 4 doors and is not as high as the Toyota. This type makes it difficult to lift heavy objects on the back.

Sensibly now, I rate the Mitsubishi. I ran it 4 years, beat the bejesus out of it and it never gave trouble. Tailgate height on the non 4WD would seem manageable (I just had a look at one parked across the road). My pal runs an Isuzu, (badged as a Chevy in UK I do believe), which is a not very pretty thing with an engine that rattles like a biscuit tin full of nuts and bolts, but it has a bigger rear passenger area than the Mitsubishi. Again he rates it as excellent value.
Two of my daughters are threatening to go back on the streets, all my grandchildren have disinherited me, my wife has placed a lump hammer by the P.C because I'm up all night checking on the back room, not knowing the time difference between here and wherever you are.
For the sake of the world's future, please read your 'Logical diagnosis and guessing' of 7.01 and my question of same date. I'm not going to copy it out because:
a. Idon't know how to do it
b. You can have the same d..m problems I am suffering
d.My wife is picking up the hammer

hey, Google translates enough for me to understand (football scores etc).
I've just had a week of correspondence by computer translation with FC Porto... Better than Chinese whispers, i tell you!
Is it me, or are the Govt playing with the statistics?
As far as I understand, they are saying that 8% of all people stopped and tested were over the limit compared to 7% last year. Doesn't that just mean that:
they are getting better at stopping drunk drivers.
They did stop and test more people than last year.
www.portal.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/ne...l
The only reason I mention this, is because they are now talking about introducing wider powers for the police to stop motorists who have not committed an offence, but are "suspected" of being drunk.

PS I do not condone drink driving. Read more
Stephen, of course it does.
You can use the same statistical illogical logic here as the Government uses.
i.e. as only 8% of accidents are caused by drunk drivers and 92% by sober drivers, getting more drivers drunk would reduce accidents.
I have an intermitent fault, when driving and applying the foot brake, the warning lights on the instrument panel for ABS and TC light up and will not go out till the engine is switched off. Sometimes the fault happens two or three times a day, sometimes i can drive for three weeks with no fault. Garage suggests it might be a faulty brake pedal switch. Has anyone had this fault an can help. Read more

I took the car to my Vauxhall dealer with the light on. The computor showed that there was no fault just that the lights were on. I have not yet checked whether the brake light bulbs are illuminating. Thanks for your suggestion. Dave

Adam - Worried me even more when I was chatting with a surgeon before he removed a vital part of my anatomy, and I asked him what they did with what they removed. His answer "We wait until we have enough, then sell them to a Chinese restaurant"! I've never touched a Chinese (meal) since.
