I've given up navigating due to sickness (of the motion variety).

Tonight I test the Rover in a 12 car... Read more

My first road rally was also my last!
It was in '64, in Rhodesia, in my new Renault R8 Gordini (1300cc, 105bhp, 750kg!), and it was the last rally before petrol rationing stopped them.
We were 'lucky' enough to win 1st Novice & I still have the nice big trophy -
no-one ever asked for it back!!
It wasn't about sheer speed, just ultra accurate timing, and as we were both Air Force navigators, it was not that difficult!

Perhaps I'm imagining it, but I think my Galaxy (V6 auto) has lost its overdrive on top gear. The revs seem higher, it slows down more noticeably on overrun when I take my foot off the gas, kickdown goes straight into 3rd rather than non-overdrive top, and instant fuel consumption readout at motorway cruising is about 1-2mpg worse than before. I rang my usual Ford dealer for a spot of hands-on diagnosis whilst on the motorway but he feigned ignorance of what I was on about (or did it come naturally?). So I'd appreciate any useful responses to the following q's:-

1. Does anyone know the figure for mph per '000 rpm in overdrive? (I'm currently showing 44mph @ 2000rpm, 66 @ 3000, 77 @ 3500 (sorry officer) so I'd say I'm getting 22mph per 1000rpm)

2. Has anyone had this problem with the Galaxy or any other car?

3. Is it a gearbox stripdown to put it right?

4. Could I be imagining it?

One further thing I could mention, I don't know whether it has any bearing on this problem, is that I've (unwittingly) got the 4x4 version. (Godfrey Davis sold it to me as a normal front-wheel-drive model, but I noticed a rear differential and drive shafts when retrieving a tennis ball just after buying it. They asked me to have my local main dealer verify it - his first reaction was that Ford didn't do a 4x4 Galaxy and thought I'd been at the magic mushrooms. This is the same dealer mentioned above.) Just seen your query. I'll see what I can find re this and email it to you. Galaxy 4x4 was launched during the 97 model year.

Any ideas on this one? As I was tootling on the motorway today a low flying pheasant flew in front of me. Any lower and my windscreen would have contacted with its uppermost tail feather or possibly worse. If I had hit it at 70 mph (or thereabouts) do you think it would have:

a) flown by grazed and slightly shaken but nothing injured but its pride
b) bounced over the top ending up as pheasant soup on the roadway behind me
or
c) smashed through my windscreen, flapping as it did so causing me to lose control at the point of no return.. (or something like that)

There are no prizes this time, its just for fun,but I'm interested what people think so I know whether to avoid this particular stretch of motorway in the future.. Read more

I got my renewal quote BEFORE this incident, but as it was £210 more than last year, I had already agreed to renew with another company, & paid my 1st premium!

It's a bit complicated, 'cos I'd accepted the other company's quote before the incident. Now I'm wondering if THEIR quote will stand!
(At least they won't be footing the bill!)

As the previous thread seems to have died, would wish to ask again, if anyone out there has any hands on experience of ( or tech data on ) the ECVT gearbox and electronic control system, used on the Panda Selecta please ?
Any input much appreciated. Thank you. Read more

After any journey involving a spell of high speed running ,say 50 miles up the M1 my side windows get a coating of grey greasy grime worst down by the door rear view mirrors but generally all over the glass. To shift it I have to use washing up liquid in water because a dry duster just spreads it about and makes it worse.I assume it is engine bay fumes escaping from under the bonnet and slip steaming round my car. Does anyone else get it or is it just me ? Every car I get seems to do it more or less. I suppose I should stop running Fuming cars. Read more

Fog City: echo the recommendation, the best m/cycle accessory in recent years, works a treat. But be very careful when fitting.

Has this show turned a corner?

Penny appears to have had a gentle makeover, (discuss - 20 marks), hence looks less like she's just come back from Tesco with the kids.

The other presenters seem more calm and assured, rather than the "like me...please!!!" approach of earlier series. Mike Brewer's tail is not wagging so irritatingly much as before. Other bloke not quite so arrogantly "fifth-form cool".

Intellegent coverage of a real journey to The South of France in affordable yet attractive cars.

Well done! How refreshing!

RIP Top Gear? Has it finally disappeared up its own tailpipe?

I thought it was awful. More like a holiday show than a car show.
3 go mad in Monte Carlo. Nice work if you can get it.

I want to upgrade the old speakers in the door panels of a 4 year old car but am reluctant to simply attack the trim panels at random as I always seem to damage the clips and they never go back properly. Is there a more considered method or do I just grab and pull ? I've never been happy doing this to any interior trim.

Thanks, Read more

PS I've just had a look and you're quite right. Sorry, got to go now. Matron says it's time for my medication ....

I just posted Britain's Fastest Car in the site news. Available from March at just £31,495. Obviously the heading is contentious, so let's all have a nice healthy argument about it. (And hopefully some input from people who have actually driven one. or its previous incarnation.)

It's Latin and my Latin is as bad as my Spanish! It's about as phoenetic as one can get after a few too many Amstels.

...for quea read quae.

I'll give you a clue - it has something to do with the "Magaluf" situation and would be used as a compliment to a young lady although you don't find many that speak Latin on a booze cruise in Spain.

We've seen the forum go through a couple of difficult patches over the past year but nothing to compare with the issue raised on the diesel thread.

So many closet railway enthusiasts, shouldn't you register this interest with Martyn before you join the group. It is a declareable interest you know.

Sarnies, flasks, notebooks, warm clothing, sensible shoes......there's no end once you start.

Anyone with a toy steam engine at home?

I've popped this on a new thread as the PC was struggling to re-load as I read each post on the other one.

Martyn if you meant that I had any responsibility for thread length (when you mentioned DW) remember Mark was the unelected holder of the key while you were away. His virtual pay must have been staggering. Also we've got David Withers here now and I've already glowed with the praise being heaped on "DW" only to realise it was his advice, not mine, being commented on!
