For what it is worth. I am a member of the National Trust. With their car insurance I saved £98 last year and it has gone DOWN this year! £282 for fully comp on my Rover 420GSDi including full home and roadside recovery and legal expenses. The RAC quoted about £132 for their service alone! I am very happy to know that £20 goes to NT and that I can visit their places mostly free of charge as well. Read more
The tachometer on my Peugeot 306 1.9 Turbo diesel works only intermittently, with no apparent reason for the failure. The sensor has been taken off and cleaned and the connection has been cleaned, to no avail. Any suggestions, please,in layman's terms?
I asked this question a few days ago but didn't receive any answers that helped, I remember months ago this subject appearing on these pages and the answer mentioned using a meter on the two wires at the connection block on the front of the engine ? HELP it's stopped working altogether now and I don't want to go to a main dealer. Read more
Thanks point taken about poor answers! and yes I had already ordered a sensor before I was told how to test it and I havn't received it yet. The cost I am told will be £37.00 and I didn't ask if it included vat regards John

Having said that, I wasn't being particularly fussy, just gently nudging Alwyn, who responded with humour. Thanks, Alwyn.
The rear screen wiper on my Nova has lost its self-parking action and stops randomly anywhere on the screen. I don't know how it works. Is this likely to be fixable or does it mean a new motor?
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks

Excellent idea
I know of some local morons, who after a night on the pop, decided to see whose car was fastest.
what did they do? Hammered it down a KNOWN speed camera road, and waited until the pictures arrived...
I kid you not...
I've been offered the above by one of my clients, sales director at an IT company.
FSH 122K 7-seats. His MD has ordered him to get rid as he has the oldest car in the company.
My brother is a Service Director at a Toyota dealer chain in the East Midlands, and claims Toyotas never break...
Apart from the HJ comments on this site, anyone any experience of running these? Fairly rare, aparrently. They seem cavernous but could be thirsty. And can't be fixed with a nail file and cable ties.

I though the Camry was a mid-size car only and the Cressida, of which I have had several, was the big one. In Dubai in the 80's to early 90's my sales team all ran Camrys and they were fine, if boring. Never any bother as I recall apart from the bangs and dings.

Thanks for all the messages regarding the 309 Peugeot. Just had it back from the garage and it is confirmed that the Head gasket is going, car is only running on 2 cylinders, starter is also going, radiator is leaking and clutch is wearing thin, plus all the other problems i mentioned earlier.
Well, considering i do not know the car's service history, just that it had this recon engin at 90,000, it appears that the previous owners did not take too much care of it. I have had a good 20,000 since buying it 18months ago and now it seems as though i would rather put £500 towards a newer car. I guess it depends on what you need a car for, but in my case i only need it for 5 months a yr when i drive down to S.france, i do not really use my car in England due to heavy motoring costs and fact of living in a small town. The car stays garaged until i need it over the summer or winter, when as i said it drives down to south Europe on the Autoroute.
Consequently i need a very reliable car as i cannot afford to breakdown in Europe (even with AA intnational cover), it is just too much stress and hassel.
If anyone has any ideas as to what i might find for up to £3000 please let me know.

I don't like recommending such things, but I bought my sister a Xantia Diesel Estate back in November or so, and she absolutely loves it. ITs a different style of driving, mind.
I've been driving a Xantia Petrol Estate for a couple of days, and its really quite surprisingly good - nice looking car, for an estate, as well. And I am sure that the roads I drove on here are much worse than those in France, so it should be even smoother.

I am thinking of buying an import from Trade Sales - has anyone had experience of Ford Main Dealers with regard to Part exchanging an import or repair under the 1 year warrenty. Any feedback will be appreciated. Read more
It has no choice
I asked about the failing fan heater on my '97 2.0 Mondeo a couple of weeks ago - and the backroom boys were absolutely correct. What was a mystery ,though, was the intermittent nature of the fault.
The Ford main dealer in Bury St Edmunds put in replacement resistors etc. The cost was£9.82 for parts and £49.50 for labour. Total (inc VAT) was £69.70. I proposed Fords reported 'good-will gestures' but was told 'not on a 68,000 miler over 4 years old'.
As the old saying goes 'smile and pay up!'
This is referred to on HJ's car by car breakdown - so, when considering a used Mondeo, it's well worth checking the heater fan speed switch - something easily overlooked.

Wondering about getting a vehicle tracking device, my neighbour just had his Saab 9-5 knicked of his driveway.
Where in the UK can I get one? Are there reputable companies out there that provide these at a reasonable price? How much would that be? Is it worth having?
Sensible comments most welcome.
Cheers

That's because like all those in Cheshire, they're "not manned 24 hours any longer".
Which translates to PC Plod visiting the place once a month to check squatters haven't taken the place over...

Tony, it does sound a good deal. I still have a trade policy, which has gone up around 20% this year to £800, so I'm envious. As I am no longer in the trade as such, I have tried to get my and my wife's cars insured seperately on a normal ploicy, and I cannot find any one to either offer insurance, or give me any of the full NCB from the trade policy. The best I could get was around £1000 for the two cars.
