Vehicle tracking devices - Tim
Wondering about getting a vehicle tracking device, my neighbour just had his Saab 9-5 knicked of his driveway.

Where in the UK can I get one? Are there reputable companies out there that provide these at a reasonable price? How much would that be? Is it worth having?

Sensible comments most welcome.

Cheers

There are numerous places up and down the counrty that specialise in fitting Traker devices. For fitters in your area, go to www.yell.com and search for car alarms & security. As a first step, it may be worth talking to the dealer you bought the car from, as most of them have a contract fitter for this type of alarm.

Another option, Tim, is to speak to your insurers. They will be able to advise you who they recommend, and should also re-quote your premiums.
Here, most insurers insist on a Tracker on upper-range vehicles, and the saving on premiums almost covers the monthly cost of the system.
Hope this helps.

.........or visit your local Plod Station. Ask for interview with Crime Prevention Officer who will (should) have all the latest bumph on such devices and what is recommended and approved by Home Office.

If you do, ask the question how many plod cars are fitted with the reciver unit, yes the tracker control can inform the police where it is, but they are more likely to do something constructive if they can foillow it themselves. Also do plod prefer 1 system over anoher?
Re: Vehicle tracking devices - Alwyn
Can't get into the plod stations in North Wales. All locked up and often don't answer a call from the phone outside.

That's because like all those in Cheshire, they're "not manned 24 hours any longer".

Which translates to PC Plod visiting the place once a month to check squatters haven't taken the place over...

They are (I believe) pretty much the standard, and are fitted by ALL police authorities (again I believe). I know of someone whose car was stolen at knife point, and was recovered in under 3 hours.

They do various flavours from about £290, annual fees of c £70

Do any (too lazy to look myself) have a feature where you can track your own car via www?? Could be v.useful that dreaded phone call from a partner / child " I'm lost and don't know where I am and the car is making a funny noise"

I don't know the exact situation, but a company in the US has just that. Read more at www.click10.com/mia/news/stories/news-107540120011...l

Tracker do a tracker-horizon, which definitely tracks the current position (whether its over the web I don't know). Not cheap, however.
Re: Vehicle tracking devices - Tim
Thanks for the great suggestions- I didn't think of asking the cops, I will follow that one up as well as the other suggestions
