I know that this isn't everso important in the greater scheme of things, but I was wondering whether an original registration number is allocated back to a car when taking a private number off?

For example, my car was registered new with a bog-standard V-plate, but me, going through a phase of vanity, had a select reg number put on. When the time comes for me to change the car, will the license bods re-issue the original V-registration (therefore saving me having to get a new set of plates made as I still have the old' uns) or will be a totally new V-registration?

I was also thinking that it could simplify matters when it comes to explaining to a subsequent owner of the car that nothing dodgy has happened, the fact that there are different registration numbers on the service records?

My last car had NI plates. I preferred it, its ageless and easy to remember. Anyway a pair of muppets rear ended a few months back and wrote it off.

I transferred it over for 80 quid, it took 4 weeks and in memory of a good car that met an untimely end and probably saved my life.

HJ recommended Sunbury Coachworks somewhere. They should be close enough for you. Tel 01932 254057.

Anyone remember Grimshaw & Wake? Didn't one of the partners buy a dairy farm in Devon and take early retirement?

Road deaths in Essex this year have already reached 111, thus equalling the previous peak in 1999 which was the excuse for introducing a raft of speed limits, cameras, road humps, chicanes, etc.
And there is still six weeks of winter weather to go.
The drop from the 1999 level back to the long-term average in 2000 was hailed as a triumph for restrictions which had "saved dozens of lives and hundreds of injuries".
And was the justification for the roll-out of a nationwide expansion from the trial areas (of which Essex was one: see the ABD website).
It seems more likely that the measures have simply introduced a false sense of security and that, as a direct result, driving standards have deteriorated.

The restrictionalists will undoubtedly find "special factors" to explain the rise this year. Isn't it strange that they did not find, or actually did not look for, special factors to explain the rise in 1999 and the drop in 2000, but simply seized on the raw statistics for their own ends. Don't know the name of the road, but if you approach Halifax from the west of M62 (or Huddersfield) and travel down the 50mph huge hill dual carriageway (I'm sure you'll know the one), you can turn right up a hill just after the Sowerby Bridge turn and before the new McDonalds (& Shell garage). It takes you around the back of the town and you appear near Sainsburys. It is in all honesty somewhere you'd not go unless you were trying to avoid traffic. We've decided not to use it anymore, it's just too much hassle and unfair on the residents.

Whoops, don't know how my previous message ended up down there.

Anyway, I have heard that prices of Vento's are plummetting. I have always been interested in a VR6 Vento, anyone have any recent knowledge of auction prices on these vehicles? Read more

Phil - my VR6 used to return 28-30MPG - I was well pleased with that, coupled with that lovely V6 burble!

This one's got me foxed.

99 Xantia with digital dashboard has, for the last couple of weeks, developed an interesting fault with the dipped beam warning lamp on the dashboard. When I turn the headlights on the external lamps light but the warning lamp doesn't. Then, Bingo! - 15 seconds later it comes on and behaves normally (i.e. I can turn the lights on and off and the warning lamp works properly).

I heard somewhere that these new fangled dashboards have processors to drive the instruments (fuel gauge etc) so is it likely that they use the processor to switch on warning lamps too?

Do any of the usual technical suspects have any idea? Contributions gratefully received to alleviate head scratching.

Its a common fault in the warning light matrix and CU its caused by a lazy relay coil all you can do is live with it ,Us Citroen lovers believe its part of the pleasure of owning one

Mobil 1 oil is usually recommended on this site, especially by Honest John. Is it really better than other synthetic oils, such as Halfords own brand?

Ford say that only SAE 5W-30, or possibly 5W-40 oil should be used in the Focus. Mobil 1 is 0W-30, so is it OK to use? Or would I be better off using Halfords oil, which comes in 5W-30?

Many thanks,

Mobil 1 is 0W/40. it's advantage is that it gets round the engine much better when cold, ie startup, because it's a 0W rating. It will protect a warm engine better than a nnX/30 because it has a 40 rating when warm.

Mobil S is a coventional multigrade, 10W/40 I think.

Some Vauxhall dealers now use Mobil 1, 0W/40, exclusively.

True. Mine's great. But cheap parts? NO! Clutch £150, radiator £130, brakes £200 (front pads and discs, rear cylinders), clutch cable £60, plugs and leads £50. The aerial was near impossible to replace. Great car, but when it breaks it's an arse.

This week the E reg 1.2 golf just stops. It starts ok again. The battery is not flat as it starts in the mornings. Ive cleaned the terminals and its showing 12.8volts and 13.5v with the engine running. It cuts out during night driving i.e when all the electrics are at full stretch. Can the experts point me in the right direction Battery, Alternator ?.
Thanks for any assistance

Could be carburettor icing. The 1300 engine is well known for it. Does the car cut out when you are slowing down for a junction? There should be a large bore flexible hose running from the exhaust manifold to the air filter housing. If this is missing or full of holes, you may have found your problem.
