I recall a thread a few weeks ago about hot/burning smell from a Mondeo heater. I have a Mk2 1.8 GLX and during a couple of damp picnics in the car on our summer hols smelt a hot clutch/engine aroma when the engine was off but the fan was on. The clutch is not slipping and I checked the fuses under the glove box for burnt connectors but found none. I've searched this forum for the old message but couldn't find it. As It due its service and first MoT in a few weeks I like to get any problems sorted while its in the garage.

Many Thanks
Jon

Hi Raph,

I was beginning to think I was the only one with this problem, symptoms:-
Say driving in traffic staying in 2nd gear and get to the magical 2,800 to 3,000 rpm mark and then engine power drops, then picks up falters etc.., then accelerating in third you get to the 2,800-3,000 mark the engine blips, very erratic going up and down though 1,2 and 3rd gears in normal driving but when you get to 4 and 5th then engine has phenomenal torque and power, which allows you to play 'leave 2 litre petrol cars struggling on hills in 5th game' as I had a 2 litre Peugeot 406, this would definitely be blown it to the weeds with this car. To the problem in hand, Ford definitely need to address this problem as I cannot believe we are the only ones with this problem but think there are very few Mondeo diesels on the road due to every one waiting for the new style registration. I am waiting to hear this week Ford's resolution to my Mondeo problem.

I've just has the "pleasure" of a new Renault Laguna to drive approx 1000 miles over the past 3 days. Trouble is, Fiona in purchasing hired me a 1.6 16V. In a car of that size and with the air con and all the toys - it drove like an absolute dog and drank fuel like G.Lacey on the Natch last Saturday night after Somerset had pulled the rug out from under Warwickshire CCC!!

Is this the failing of the Company Car Tax mechanism in place now that encourages small engined yet "rep" sized cars to in order to achieve the lowest feasible tax band. IMHO, this will just lead to scores of underpowered but thrashed and therefore, thirsty rep-mobiles - doesn't this go against the principles of the tax - i.e. Kyoto? Any car can be driven steadily and release minimal CO2 etc in line with its engine size but out on the open road it all becomes a joke.

As an example, I always remember the Rover 216 Coupe being a real dog and thirsty to boot whereas the adequately powered 220 Coupe was a pleasure to drive and more economical.

As an aside - the credit card keyless system on the Laguna - WOW! (lots to go wrong tho?) Read more

One classic one was that a few drops of petrol was more carciogenic than a tanker load of diesel.
A old chap on local radio the other day was saying he spent his whole working life in a bus repair garage in Derby starting there well over 50 years ago. He said there was no ventilation and the garage was always full of diesel smoke from running engines. He stated that he never knew of any mechanics who had ever suffered from bronchial or similar ailments."

Dear All

I am having major grief selling my imported 5 month old Golf GTI 1.8T. It was suggested on this board a few months ago that I would get the full UK trade price, but I can't get anything like it, even advertised in Autotrader for £13999.

What should I do? The VW dealers wont touch it, I had an offer from a local dealer for 13K, should I take it?

have just looked at a 2001 mkiv golf 1.6 se estate that has W (Wolfsburg) for its digit 11 "assembly plant". Assuming "W" still means wolfsburg of course

Hi Guys,

The alloys on my car were curbed by a previous owner - is there some sort of service beyond simply cleaning to tidy 'em up?

Hi

I am having two new tyres fitted this afternoon (R reg. Mondeo) front and rear passenger side. I don't know why these have worn more than the driver?s side, but they are only just legal. As I am driving to Sunny Wales on Saturday, I wanted to get them done. Could it be the tracking which is causing uneven wear and should I get the tracking checked when I get the tyres fitted?
Also, the new tyres are not exactly the same as the existing ones (Currently Continental sport contact, new ones Continental eco contact). Should I ask for the new tyres to be put on the front?
Probably obvious answers, but unfortunately, not to me!

Thanks in advance

The one key bit of info. we don't have is how much greater wear the tyre have on the worst worn side. I'd suggest if it's even over the tread, and not more than a mm or two it's not a tracking problem. If it is uneven wear, then I'd suspect tracking rather than unequal cornering speeds. I've certainly found that tyres can show uneven wear rates, usually the nearside front wearing more than the offside, but only by 1mm over the life of the tyre.

I'm looking to buy a car capable of towing a horsebox plus 2 horses, probably about 2000 kg all up. I'm not too keen on owning a 4wd due to the expense and dubious image but can I get away with a 'normal' car? Also a friend of mine was advised to get an automatic as it is better for towing. Is this correct? Would appreciate any advice on cars/towing etc.. Read more

Awww jeeez - don't call me fluffy!

Looks like you need a 4x4 then. May I recommend the X5 4.4 Sport at the other end of the spectrum (as mere £45k). Had a test drive in one (well a mate was driving) and it's an absolute monster, felt about as fast as a 530. Not sure if it has a seperate chassis tho - maybe thats why it handles.

Andy

Of course not. They keep telling us this don't they? OK, if the cameras are 'nothing to do with money', why don't they just stick the points on our licence?
Sorry to bang on about these cash cameras, but I've had a few glasses of exellent Shiraz and I'm feeling militant. It'll wear off overnight! Read more

I agree with Mr Dick.

Prescott want motorists of the road. A ban is as good a way as any.

I think the fact that Straw and his Driver got let off at 101 shows that the Govt know their speeding protection racket is crooked and a blast at 100mph on clear road is safe - they're gonna stick with it anyway!
